  2. Nicely done! Yeah, at this point I don't think it hurts to just say that the glyphs were just IDing Grubgob himself. The Klan icon is just a mix of Deathskull and Freebootas badges, which is what the Orks are? And regarding Grubgob's shouting, while I've got no objection to leading you on all sorts of false trails (it is a murder mystery, after all!) in the spirit of fair play I should clarify that Grubgob was looking at the Ordo Xenos Icon on your shoulders rather than the DW Livery as a whole - so he could still be referring to Skaayn, but equally could be referring to Kine, Aykawa, Alda, or for that matter, any of thousands of Ordo staff you've not encountered yet?
  3. That is because GW cannot quite make up their mind whether 40K is a narrative or a setting. They try to have it both ways and whether this comes across as the best of both worlds or the worst is largely down to personal taste. Up until the end of 3rd edition, 40K was clearly a narrative as new elements were added to the lore sequentially. The 2nd Armageddon War led to the 3rd, the full nature of the Tyranids was revealed during Hivefleet Behemoth's attack on Ultramar and the Gothic War ledinto the 13th Black Crusade. The Eye of Terror campaign was the high point of this as players were encouraged to take part in the worldwide campaign with the promise that the results would shape the lore going forwards. And then GW backtracked. 4th edition came out with the date frozen at the fall of Cadia. Characters who had been killed in recent campaigns such as Tycho and Eldrad remained playable in the new codices. GW stopped telling what happened next. This pattern held true for over a decade into 7th edition where codices just contained the same lore rehashed over and over again. 40K ceased to be a narrative and became a setting. All that changed at the end of 7th edition with Gathering Storm. Suddenly we learned the consequences of the 13th Black Crusade, Cadia was destroyed, Ynnead began to awaken, the galaxy was torn in half by the Great Rift and a Primarch was resurrected to save the Imperium in its darkest hour. We were back to a narrative again. Then 8th edition began with the rushed introduction of Primaris Marines. The first novel in 8th edition Dark Imperium and inexplicably was set over a century after Guilliman's return at the end of the Indomitus Crusade (later retconned to a decade). The time jump felt wierd, as though several chapters were missing from the story. GW has since retconned the whole Dark Imperium trilogy to take place in the early years of the Indomitus Crusade and used stories like the Dawn of Fire series and the Great Work to try and fill in the blanks. This has led to the feeling of a progressing storyline but also the sense of low stakes. Like comics, we know that no major characters will be killed off (at least not for good). The Daemon Primarchs are effectively immortal while their loyalist counterparts are not. This means that every direct confrontation between them will end in the Chaos primarchs losing due to some mcguffin or other and shouting "You haven't seen the last of me". Becoming a daemon was supposed to be exchanging their souls for more power but right now it looks like a bad deal as we have many examples of Daemon Primarchs being defeated by their non-daemon brothers: Daemon Primarch victories Horus beat Sanguinius Fulgrim beat Guilliman Daemon Primarch defeats Perturabo beat Angron Dorn beat Fulgrim Jaghati beat Mortarion Sanguinius beat Angron Vulkan beat Magnus Guilliman beat Magnus Guilliman beat Mortarion Lion beat Angron This is why everything feels low stakes. Despite the feeling of a progressing narrative, we know that no major characters will die as that would seriously hamper their faction. Losses on either side are generally little-known worlds or non-model Characters we have no investment in.
  4. I'm definitely leaning towards a casual Howling Banshee idea if I go down the Eldar route. They're easily my favourite of the Aspects (shocking, I'm sure) and I think using the Titan Crew kinda look would lead to something pretty cool, if very 80s. I'll probably avoid the more 80's hairstyles tho, I don't think I'm brave enough to commit to those, tho I might just dye my hair red and go from there, that always seemed fun. I'm hoping to sketch out some rough ideas sometime soon, so fingers crossed I make time to sit down and draw without getting distracted by something else. I've always found robes to be a bit boring. I know they're around a ton in the Imperium and probably super common in the Sisters of Battle, but it's not something I've ever looked at and gone "Ah yeah, would kill to wear that." Now if there was some sort of fancy dress or ballgown, now we're talking. I assume Sisters of some rank attend fancy events, right? Maybe that's an idea, And y'know, I've been recommended that series a few times recently, I might have to give it a look. I remember enjoying some of Wraights other work, tho it's been a hot minute. That would be greatly appreciated! I always meant to pick it up but I kept getting sidetracked

  7. I think the pattern was there and demonstrated earlier in the thread that we could expect a chaff unit and a box of three elite things, I'd expect a terminator unit too down the line but at the newer scale and almost certainly not a copy of the heresy red butchers because of all that crossover blocking nonsense. Blood crushers would have had me back on the WE train like a powerful moss though lol
  8. Short range: Vulcan Plasma is still the loadout to beat. Long Range: Swarmers and Beamer?
  9. A quarter of a century! Incredible been here for 20 of those… still only managed 60 posts , 61 now back to lurking
  10. I joined back in 2008 and the B&C was and is the only online site (other then the Bioware site during the Neverwinter Nights hay day) I have ever really been a part of. For most of my earliest years I dwelled in the Liber as I was ashamed of sharing my actual painted stuff and as I had a very limited hobby budget the B&C and writing in the Liber was my only real easy outlet for the hobby. It doesn't feel like I have been on the site for sixteen years and I know I don't get to the Liber at all these days but the Bolter and Chainsword remains my home on the net. I've had a few months away from the hobby here and there but even then I would keep an eye on the site. And with the recent death of my hobby mojo due to, well... events, it is the community here on the B&C that has kept me interested and starting to paint, albeit slow. So in short, thank you to the amazing website and its amazing admin team and moderatii whom have formed the core spirit of my hobby interest this past nearly 20 years. I doubt there would be a Brother Argent (or Silver Phoenix/SP as I was in the day) or Argent Forge without you all.
  11. The thing that would always have existed, if the resources and experience had been there in 1988, is an Ultramarine character who is an antagonist. Every year there are many thousands of games played of loyalist marines fighting loyalist marines. I think everyone is better off if there is an Ultramarine company captain with some powerful wargear whose company will unquestioningly attack, say, Uriel Ventris or Captain Titus and their companies for being some kind of heretic. The real world fact of marine vs marine games is unavoidable, and I think GW is setting very low expectations of players by not having a Stibor Lazaerek in the main army list and the main subfaction. For boxes I think the most important number is sprues per box, or models pers box, and the classic problem is the many different options for heavy and specials. Its really good for marine squads to have a heavy gunner and a special gunner in the unit. What I think is always going to be a limit for GW from 2016 onward is having five different heavy choices and five different special choices but only one of each in the squad. To me. it makes much more sense for a squad to have a heavy weapon, but with a choice of only one or maximum two different weapons for that weapon. Yes, marines are already elite. I really welcome the basic assault intercessor being super strong unit, with no room or need for a higher tier. On one hand, the idea that normal brothers in a normal assault squad are just blocking or distraction units is wrong. On the other hand, the galaxy is filled with scarier things than even the most elite terminator in a chapter. This ask-me-anything post on reddit <link> said that there was an instruction from management for the fifth edition codex to launch two new SKUs and thats why sternguard and vanguard were created. That's not exactly scandalous. What it means is that there wasn't a creative type with his head in the clouds really hoping that there was enough money in the budget to release a melee veteran box thats crucial to the story. The demands of the story are not crying out for these two tiers of melee veteran. Long range devastators are the last unit that should ever have heavy weapons, in the in-universe codex. One of the very few lines that purports to be directly from the codex astartes is unfortunately from Dawn of War II, and it says the role of the tactical squad is to draw fire from devastators so that the devastators can fire freely. Besides DoW, it's intuitive that for every Kg of gravis armour loaded onto the thunderhawk, there's one fewer Kg of heavy bolter rounds that can be loaded. Clearly a front line unit that needs protection like aggressors or eradicators has to carry either fewer rounds or lighter rounds than a unit in tacticus armour and carrying heavy bolters.
  12. Long time lurker, recent member to the forum. I am primarily a Horus Heresy enjoyer, a Blackshield from the glory days of 1.0. I look forward to discussing all things Warhammer with you all, including, but not limited to, painting, lore, 3d printing, and janky rules interactions Cheers, Nemean
  13. Probably fancier Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs and regular backpacks, if they want to let them have a choice, I could see them not giving them a non Jump-pack option. Sternguard, but assault jumpy boys. I did like the earlier talk of perhaps an Omni armor variant, but I doubt they would.
  14. So with the reboxing of various titan classes, what is the consensus on Warhound load outs?
  15. Considering how Sternguard changed from Index to Codex, what would a fully revamped Vanguard squad look like?
  16. REMOVED: Super agree with ancient in Terminator armor. I really like the bladeguard ancient model, you're probably right that it's too niche, tho. Tac squads are dead already, definitely need to be consolidated I was talking about devies with my hobby store buddies yesterday. There's really no point to them these days either, but you can almost make a squad of them with primaris options, which is kind of fun to think about. I've been a huge fan of Vanguard Vets and Terminator Assault Squads since 4th. I can't let them go. Classic dreads def need to go, but Impulsors need a closed top variant before you sunset Rhinos. Open cabin Impulsors are dumb :cuss:. CONSOLIDATED: Everything you said here is on point. No comment. UPDATED/ADDED: I've never enjoyed having to rely on canon characters in play. I'd rather see all these guys take a back seat to other command options. Selfishly, I'd love to see a new Lysander though, since you mention it. The first founding Sons of Dorn don't get enough love. Hard agree on BA and SW upgrades. Most notably Sanguinary Guard and a better version of DC. SW could get away with an upgrade sprue. They're probably getting the next Loyalist Primarch too, whether or not anyone wants to see Russ return. I want assault terminators and vanguard vets. It's been downright embarrassing trying to field them alongside primaris boys for 2 whole editions. The deathwing knights are too good a teaser for them to just ignore assault termies, and the jump cap needs a bodyguard unit, just sayin'.
  17. Alright I think I settled in the sponson design and I leveled off the exhausts. I'm hoping that modge podge brushed on it will help seal the foam and make it easier to paint.
  18. 6 years later….. there’s a couple things left to add to them and a base for the turret , but they’re pretty much finished (geez I shoulda just done that all those years ago ) better pics later , next up is the fireblade to lead them … cheers M
  19. Ready to report to the LIon! Last model from the Wrath of the Soul Forge King box..... Since I already have a squad of intercessors done, I figured I'd knock out the old combat patrol box minus the 5 intercessors... And the chaplain to finish off the combat patrol....
  20. Ugh, it's fine, I did it to myself. I've been painting Chaos since I was 14 or so, I knew what I was getting myself into. Really tho, did the coolest faction have to have the most trim? I suppose that's the price Chaos fans pay for being objectively the best faction with the sexiest fanbase. And yeah, I absolutely love how much pop Plasma weapons can add to a squad or an army. I might do a whole Chosen squad armed with just Plasma weapons, but I also don't want to overdo it on the infantry. I already have 20 Chaos Marines, 20 Berzerkers, and 10 Raptors in the army, plus some Cultists. I did some digging and managed to find a couple photos of that Defiler I painted a couple years back. The quality isn't great, this was before I figured out what decent lighting was, but I'm still pretty happy with the result. It was for a Khorne heavy Black Legion army, so I worked some reds and blood into the look. I think I painted this crabby little fella in a single day, so it's hardly my best work, but I figure it's always fun to look back and see how you've improved and all that. I promise I'll have something much nicer to look at next time.
  21. Ramiel studied the flickering hololithe again, a low resolution image with thermal damage. "Well that explains how the Simple desert folk have been picking off our patrols." Both the Solar Auxilia commanders and Astartes shifted nervously. "I recognise some of the markings lord." Spoke one of the black clad legionnaires. "On Gaber, we would find xenos strung up in the jungles canopy with this glyph etched into their hides...those that still had them." He stabbed a finger at the shoulder pad of a skull faced warrior. "The locals had a name for them but id rather not say it, the translation was as crude as the word, but the gist of it was Id rather be hunted by what they hunt." A murmur ran through the command staff. A glance silenced them. "Thank you for your colourful insight brother." He said dryly, before he could continue one of the mortals cleared his throat, pointing to a grainy figure in the rear. "Melta weapons and lots of them my lord." A scribe tried in vane to improve the gain of the image. "And more krak grenades than we've seen in a month." Growled a senior non-commissioned officer playing with his bushy moustache, the comment got a chuckle from even the astarte. "It explains the loses of our armour, the terrain would let those kill teams get close in unseen." Added Icarus, a junior astarte eager to show his worth. Ramiel shut off the holo display, taking up his blade from his squire. The blade made a high pitched white as it drew across the rock floor before he stabbed it down into the ground. "Now we know who we face, it is now our duty to remind them who they face!" A cheer went round the gathering, lifting their spirits. Outside the cave, Ekateryn chuckled to himself as he finished posing the last of the sentries, two of them were still alive unable to wet their lidless eyes, tongueless mouths made a hacking noise. "Perfect." He sighed before turning to ascend the cliff face in silence.
  22. Plasma weapons really are a gift, aren't they? Great excuse for a splash of bright colour. Loving how this is all coming together. Sorry you have to do all that metallic trim!
  23. Also, conveniently, a coffee cup in case you forget your War Dog here's a full list though of 100mm models
  24. I'd be absolutely down to pick your brains about Persian themed marines. My homebrew chapter is Persian based IF successors.
