Baal Dropout Posted November 21, 2008 Author Share Posted November 21, 2008 @savage_heathen: here's a close-up of the right arm (for everybody's benefit, many credits go to this tutorial ;) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/matt_atknsn/IMG_1722.jpg cut the arm just below the part where the shoulderpad goes over and reposition where necessary (I used a bit of a bit here coz I need to free up my bitsbox the hand is from the lefty: cut-off the thumb and glue to the other side the position of the hand is "manhandled" to coincide with the left arm (ie the left hand is completed with the bolter already glued into place) right hand is blue-tacced under the bolter and glued to the right arm puttywork soft armour to fill in the void between hand-arm (as seen in pic) Hope this helps/clarifies @shortsonfire79: thanks mate (just the bike though, the rest: driver, sidecar, heavy weapon and passenger was what I did; edited original post as well to set things right ) Some things did today though: some months back that same friend gave me two death company models, was saving it for something else but thought I'm better off with plastic for conversion... so I decided to make him the demisquad leader/2iC of my 3rd squad (not that I combat squad my tacs, just an excuse for converting things :lol:) Will post when I do get to do 2 more PA dudes (for a trio pic ) Cheers! Most of these may look done already but no: only those two on the top rhino hatch are 100% done, the rest needs either:final details (like highlights and weathering, as the case of the rhino) missing bits (like their handheld weapons, the row of painted marines in front of the rhino) paint up to standards assembly and paint [*]upper right half: the Venerable Furioso Dreadnaught I have spotlighted in this thread. Still some ways off, but I'm confident it'll be completely painted for the challenge [*]lower-rightmost of the pic is the tray containing the bits and bobs I'll use for the Multi-Melta Attack Bike sidecar with passenger/gunner scratch/conversion... Need to clean the mould lines on the Grnade dude... Reg2 needs some cleaning/soaping: for some reason, after I painted VMC Red Hull and letting it sit for a week or so while I work on the rest one-by-one, there are spots that paint doesnt adhere to (I doubt my gf handled the fig as some of the spots are pretty hard to get to). Another marine (almost) done! But alas, having a photo op of your fig thus bring out the best, and the worst, of it. From the pic below, I just remembered to get rid of that gash-o-paint on the upper part of the backpack, to 'trim' that Mithril Silver highlight on the bolter and fix that rogue highlight on the left couter. Assembled (Grnade) marine to be holding one in his left hand (simple cut-and-paste of the arm/hand+ a grenade) and the (2iC) with a conversion MkIV helm. I also need to put a small BA blood drop onto the left greave of (2iC) as well as on the backpack of (Grnade). Regarding the MkIV helm: I wanted the skull so I chose that particular helm to sculpt on (again, no way to acquire the bit). Ehm..btw, I am moving my first (unsteady) steps in converting and sculpting details for my SMs. What I noticed, anyway, is I don't really like green stuff, especially because I can't work on it after it dries (you know, filing, cutting, sanding..). I noticed you are using a different kind of putty. Would you please tell me which product it is , and how you work it? It would make me sosososo happy :) Again compliments for your cool models! I havent touched the fig for a while, so should still look the same (except for the 'grail', I aint gonna use that anymore), head is being stripped of paint at the moment. @bluewolf: thanks! :tu: The freehand skull on the chappy is somehow a 'cheat': I've used a decal to get things ok (and I have a stash of those SM decal sheets I must consume when/where possible) @shinigami: Hehehe, you're better off with greenstuff (or any putty formulated for sculpting/model/miniature work) coz what I use is helluva worse that greenstuff: it's a 2-part epoxy water sealant. it's much more sticky, being colored bleached bone and commando khaki, it's hard when to stop mixing it, takes too long to set (the longest I've waited was 4hours before it's workable, 24+hours to set), very hard/brittle and very difficult getting a sculpted sharp edge. I've tried GS, way way better than this. Stick with GS. I'm broke so I have to make do with what is available for me. (I get what I paid for :P). Baal Dropout Posted January 20, 2009 Author Share Posted January 20, 2009 ^Thanks Stefoserpent :tu: A quickie update: Puttying is like a relationship: it doesnt always go the way you want it, but if you do go for it, the results can be very satisfying :P Did a bunch of assembly work the past couple of days: firstly concentrated on the attack bike sidecar. I'm still not yet sold on the cut-up legs I did for the passenger, though I'm taking my pace. If I hasten it, it'll become a 'chore' for me and it's gonna take out the fun in this aspect of the hobby (main reason why it takes me 2-3 days just to paint a single figure, rank-and-file or otherwise). Too much tasks for the sidecar to list here :( But... The (2iC) for the tactical squad is ready for painting (again have to wait on that tho till I finish assembly of other models for batch spraying). That single ornament on the left greave became the crux of the figure :D Hmmm... I also need to cast/do an army badge... oh well... Corbulo, Ayayayayay... for one I'm talking about his greave ornaments: winged blood drop on both greaves... Kinda done with them: the putty is curing at the moment and have to revisit it later to get the edges right. Also did the final touches on his badge-of-office right pouldron. As for it being finer, I dont think so, it's just the same as greenstuff. Harder lines? I just let the putty cure for a while, then go about cutting excesses and coaxing the putty to retain the hard edge (if I can though) You might as well (and should) do a mondo tutorial, and do the greaves, shoulder pads, helmets, and the wrist lines. The way I do my red is as follows: undercoat black VMC Hull Red, 2 thin coats, leave black areas off VMC Carmine Red, enough coats to get the even color, leave areas of VMC Hull Red where applicable, like joints/edges GW Blood Red, 2-3 thin coats on lighted areas 1:3 GW Blazing Orange:GW Blood Red highlight 3:1 GW Blazing Orange:Gw Blood Red highlight GW Blazing Orange along the edges 1:2 GW Bleached Bone:GW Blazing Orange final highlight along the edges (I dont have GW Fiery Orange :D ) I guess it's orange-y red enough :mellow: But before I continue: some steps may be ommited: like the VMC Hull Red basecoat and the GW Blazing Orange:GW Blood Red highlights. Should be good enough for the tabletop. As for my black lines: I use 1:10 Tamiya Flat Black (enamel) and paint thinner. Load a dedicated brush with the mix, touch a corner on your fig and let it flow off the brush and onto along the corner. Much like everybody's magic wash, but oil based. I let my fig dry enough before further painting or touch-ups. (I have to point out the difference between paint thinner, lacquer thinner and lacquer flo, as I didnt know before I got into the scale model hobby) Anyways...
