Greater Daemon Tactics

Does anyone use these guys? They're going to run you a minimum of 115 points counting the summoning source but they're atleast as good if not better than a normal priced Daemon Prince.

I can see them being useful, especially for mounted squads where they can pop out 2" away from the vehicle. While they can't move in the movement phase, they can assault and if nothing is in range, you still get to run. Its not perfect but its something and should get you close in on the next turn.

But is this all theoryhammer? Lets toss out some ideas or experiences.

not fast enough for me even when used out of infiltrating units , they will maybe destroy one unit max and only if its something like tacticals/tau/ig . a csm /cult / BT/SW [specially with BC being spamed all the time] units beat him in hth . + he kills the champion making one of your own units vulnerable to hth . not worth the pts its costs without wings .

If you're playing solely to grind out a win then probably not.

I've had mixed results with them. From arriving at just the right time and butchering hoards of orks to arriving in the wrong place (due to losing my champs) and being shot to bits achieving nothing.

Too unpredictable for competitive play and not worth it if you like your pimped out champs.

For me they keep it 'chaosy' though rather than just being marines with spikes on and I love it when they turn up at the right time in the right place and destroy everything!

128 pt minimum if you use chosen, 130 otherwise. Champs cost their base and the champ upgrade price remember.

Good point, I didn't count in the base cost of the unit.

My personal thought was to put them in my dual Plasmagun squads. I normally don't need a Champion as they're for rapid firing and I have IoCG for LD. Run them around in a Rhino and once its time, POOF! Out pops out a giant daemon someone on the board to make life a pain for my opponent, and more importantly act as a giant screen for my scoring unit. I think the extra 2" from the Rhino would help you get the charge, or atleast some extra distance. Toss in a Run move and you should be in someone's face quickly.

It was mentioned in another thread (by Brother Vader) that Chaos MC's might be an awesome answer to the Vindicator spam we are seeing with Marines. T6 means you can't be insta-killed, 4+ Inv keeps you safe from half of the shots and W4 means they're going to have to fire 8 shots on average to take you out. Most importantly, S6 + 2D6 against rear armor = dead tanks galore

Yes it was me! I'd use a Winged Prince though, with no Psychic powers or marks (maybe slaanesh, as it's cheap, so he gets the jump on characters), they'd be a waste of points if he's going after vehicles. Wings make him more reliable than summoning.

I think the greater daemon is characterful and potentially powerful, if he arrives while you still have champs on the table in the right places to cause mayhem. He is a 128 point (minimum) random element and his best attribute is that your opponent can't really plan for him. He's a disruption tactic, use him to mess your opponent about while the rest of your army gets the job done. If he pops out near a vindi, bonus.

yeah the problem is for 128 pts you can get 3 termis with combi weapons [almost 4] they will pop the same land raider and unlike the GD dont have to worry about killing your own asp champion or about 10 man squads with fists [or BC you cant imagine how fast do they kill stuff].

cheap 5 man raptors squads with double meltaguns are great units to have him pop out of. They kill a tank then summon the daemon. The daemon goes on to kill more tanks/units and your opponent is forced to choose between shooting the still potent and fast moving raptors or the G, both of which combined are cheaper than a csm squad with standard upgrades yet will require more than their points cost of enemy units to get rid of. Plus the raptors make up for the lack of wings on the greater daemons.

The greater daemon is very nice for it's price. The trouble with it is that its hardly something you can plan on. It comes in on a 4+ on the 2nd turn, like it or not. I'd rather it come in 3rd turn so it doesn't get heavy boltered to death, but it is what it is. This isn't the old daemon possession with a dedicated possessed model, again, for better or for worse.

Here's how i look at it: the greater daemon's stats are borderline rediculous for it's point cost. Having a monsterous creature in a chaos army with so much emphasis on CC is really important. The daemon prince is a good buy as well, but unless he has wings and/or mark or tzeentch he will suffer many of the same problems of getting mowed down before seeing CC. That makes the daemon prince alot more expensive.

The actual summoning works like this: chances are you're going to be purchasing aspiring champs anyway for their powerfist or combi weapon, etc. Buying champs or taking units specifically for facilitating the GD is a bad idea. It's more like the GD has the option of popping out of any champ in any unit. This means this means that the daemon bomb isn't really a viable tactic anymore, but the GD tipping the scale alongisde a major offensive is more realistic. It's less kamikazi and more pushing things over the top. GD is a great deal

Whats so scary with Blood Claws? I thought they were just like Space Wolf Neophytes.

I dont know having 10 powerfist attack what ever they charge or get charge kind of a puts the hurt on any meq hth unit . being able to run 3 such units in an army doesnt help much either .
