@ Rognvaldr - I'll add your chapter to the next update.

@ Typical Cricket - Nice start. All the other images in the gallery are v5, armed with a weapons (preferably a bolter), and have the chapter symbol on the shoulder. Please use the v5 painter to create a new image. If you have trouble applying the symbol let me know.

@ Lagrath - I look forwards to seeing what you come up with.

@ Solid Zaku - Thanks, that's above and beyond the call of duty! The top symbol may not show up in the gallery but it can be handy when correcting images. (I notice that if you turned your symbol 45 degrees it would be easier to read once applied to the shoulder?)

- thanks all for chipping in.

What yellow did you use? (the number value).

You have to make another with a non-half scheme and all yellow helm, then cut and paste (or post it here and I'll sort it while I drink my coffee ;) )

The Angels of the Retribution are canon, and at the moment all canon chapters link to Lexicanum. I may change this later, but be warned that if GW suddenly decide to develop one of their chapters listed in name only, I will link to the Lexicanum or the main GW site. At present I am leaving the issue well alone for now (or until I find a way around it with some fancy code hacking of the gallery), but leave this here as you never know... :jaw:

Fair enough. Seeing as how the article just says "The Angels of Retribution are listed by name only in Chapter Approved 2001." I thought there might be some leeway. But fair enough. I see that you have fan-made color schemes for canon chapters. Does that mean you'll use the color scheme then?

Wow, you stop playing 40k for a year, and occasionally really cool things happen, like this project. Way back in the day Kurgan the Lurker collected a list of Chapter Names, which you can probably still find, but this is way cooler.

So first, here's a basic pic of my Vindicators. It's not very high quality, but it gives you an idea.

http://www.themilleniumgate.com/ryjak/SMPainterConcepts/Vindicator.jpg

Further, when I made that with the SM painter over a year ago, I did not have access to image-editing software, so I was unable to integrate my Chapter Symbol. Can't seem to post a symbol image either... Just a simple red 'V', which you can see to the left in my Avatar image.

Philip S, I would love to contribute material to flesh out my DIY Chapter for your 1,000 Chapter project. Maybe in a month or so I'll have time to actually finish my IA write-up, but in the meantime, please let me know what I can do to help you out.

Edit: Found a chapter you don't currently have listed, the Star Foxes.

I see that you have fan-made color schemes for canon chapters. Does that mean you'll use the color scheme then?

Do you have a copy with a plain white background?

I am thinking of removing the fan made schemes for canon chapters missing a colour scheme and replacing them with more blanks (I added the first blanks after these chapters, as I inherited them from Dazzo). All new canon chapters I find that are missing a colour scheme are added as a blank.

This is because I want the canon chapters sub-category to be 100% accurate, and having fan made colour schemes kinda undermines its integrity.

So I have to change my name and my colors?

Not at all. I'm sure we can fit your chapter in.

I pointed out the similarities as I know a lot of fans who create a chapter want their creation to be distinctive, and that you may not have been aware of these other chapters, or the similarities?

If you are happy with these similar chapters being close to yours, then so am I!

So first, here's a basic pic of my Vindicators.

The Vindicators are a canon chapter, and at the moment canon chapter without a colour scheme as uploaded as a blank (see first reply in this post for more)

A the moment I am hunting down links for chapters which are missing an Index Astartes (MIA). Forum thread: = Request for links to Chapter IA =. When you have some material pop by and post it here.

Thanks. I take it there isn't a B+C v5 painter version of this chapter?

It sounds like you've made a decision on all the 228 official "canon" chapters, to not accept any submission from hobbyists for them. I think that's a... limited viewpoint. Many of these "canon" chapters are only mentioned by name in one or two GW publications. If someone has written an IA Article on one of these chapters, or has a paint scheme, I don't see how listing it will take away from your 1000 Chapters project. I thought the point was to have a massi ve list of Space Marine Chapters, linking to as much information about each chapter as possible.

[/rant]

I will admit, I am a bit biased, as I came up with my Vindicator chapter in 1995. They didn't become a "canon" chapter until a WD article listed about 100 chapter names; this same article was re-printed in Chapter Approved 2001. Heck, I started a now-defunct website in 2000 about my Vindicators, and I'm pretty sure I posted a lot of that stuff before they were only mentioned by name in the GW articles. For all I know, they found my website, and printed their name.

Should I be penalized for GW "stealing" my stuff? Will you remove a DIY chapter that becomes "canon" by being mentioned in a WD?

[/rant]

RE: Star Fox Chapter

Beats me, I just remembered they had a website, and posted a link for you.

(side note: The Lexicanum entry for the Vindicators states they were listed in Chapter Approved 2001 and White Dwarf 43. That isn't the correct WD publication, as 40k wasn't even mentioned in WD until issue 93. Hopefully someone reading this will be inspired to take action to correct this. The WD Issue was out sometime before CA 2001, based on my memory on when I read it. It might be cited in CA 2001.)

My old Liber Astartes site treated canon Chapters the same way Ryjak. We eventually added "fan version" links on some of the pages before the Warp.net exploded but we always treated canon Chapters the same way Philip is.

And as much as I find Lexicanum to be full of glaring errors, the WD43 reference is actually in regards to the German White Dwarf numbering system. The US version was WD235 from August 1999.

'Sounds like' and 'is' are two different things. I like to think I am open minded, and I really like fans making up background for chapters that are undeveloped by GW. I was looking at Codex Grey's fleshing out of the Silver Skulls and wishing I could link to it. At the moment my rules may sound a bit harsh, and it may sound even harsher if I enforce the 'canon only' rule and turn all the canon chapters without colour schemes into blanks. However this does not mean I am not plotting to get the fan interpretations in there.

At the moment I'm concentrating on the bigger picture, but in the back of my mind I have an idea to make the 'asterisk' on blank chapters clickable, and that will lead to a fan made version of an undeveloped chapter.

Please leave your chapter in this thread, one day I may come back and pluck it out for an asterisk!

I understand it's a simple cost/benifit analysis for you. Is it worth X more time when you're already investing Y time in this? And then you might have to figure out what to do if 2+ people have stuff for the same chapter, esp. if one of them ends up being GW.

I just wanted to give you a different perspective. Whatever you go with, I still applaud what you're doing right now.

@ Terminatorinhell - Thanks. I'll add it to the next update.

@ Ryjak - I appreciate you sharing your perspective as it made me think more about the future and how to resolve this issue. I figure the GW will always trump fan made chapters if they have the same name. I will add asterisks to the Chapter's name if there is a fan made alternative, and if there is more than one fan made alternative: more asterisks!

I not sure how to handle two fan made Chapters with the same name? I think for now the most complete will be included, but this will not work if both candidates are excellent (gladiatorial-flamewar-deathmatch?).

You might be surprised how much people would be willing to collaberate if they happen to have the same name for their marines, particularly if they're part of the B&C community. Until then, multiple *** would work just fine.
