DiStudios Death Guard Army

Hi guys,

here is some pictures of my up and coming Death guard army. I am hoping that by sharing some of my work I will learn some new things and keep motivated to finish a project. The idea was for me to do a pre-heresy army but I like the Forge World Death Guard stuff so much that I ended up going for a Heresy Era army, I guess I was just looking for a excuse to put together daemon type things

Typhus Herald of Nurgle:

I started working on this figure last week as a whim. I was actually looking for some random bits to get rid of when I stumbled on some unopened Obliterators and a Typhus. I think once finished it will make for a nice centre piece to the army.

With Salute this weekend, I am hoping to pick up some lovely Forge World goodness to bulk up the rank and file and get my hands on a trio of Blight drones.

Thanks for looking

Hail Nurgle! Typhus is looking crazy, and it's cool to see the Chaos Warrior legs used - I've just picked up some Warriors myself to create some Death Guard Chosen.

Can we have some close ups of those plague marines? I want to see how you've adapted the legs, because in those pics it looks like the feet are a bit oversized. I have to say that the Warrior legs seem to be sculpted a bit short compared to their bodies (by GW, not you), so I'd be interested to see how you make use of them.

Thanks for looking and the kind comments,

I have added some close up pictures of Tyhpn as requested. I managed to finish one of the arms and added a few more minor details, the right arm is not far behind but I think that will have to wait for tomorrow.

Still a long way to go, needs more maggots!

I really like the way this turned out, after a lot of chopping I think I have achieved the image I wanted, of space marines being so powerful that regular men are tossed around like rag dolls.

I am hoping that this close up shot shows how much fun I had adding the rot flesh and armour effects.

As requested by Gresiloth, I have included some shots of the Death Guard infantry. I have put them next to incomplete figures so hopefully it gives a scale comparison, the only thing I can really say is that I trim the belt a little to better fit the Death Guard torsos.

Hope these photos help a little

Right time for bed, got a potentially expensive shopping trip tomorrow! fingers crossed tomorrow evening will see more Nurgle goodness in the form of three Blight Drones.

Typhon now has both hands attached and is in a much better state to sow trouble. I had a lot of fun putting together yesterdays loot, the triple Blight Drones are going together really easily, I am working on custom bases this time rather than just buying pre-mades.

The back still has the most work to do, I need to add lots of little details such as pustules and maggots to break up the plain areas of armour.

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad205/DiStudios/SS101375.jpg

I opted to leave the Manreaper as it is, all I need to do is rework the wrappings that got scrapped away when removing the original hand.

It was my first time scratch building a hand and sculpting digits, it was a little stressful at first but I am happy with the final outcome. At the end, it's a good experience and one I can carry forward with my next project.

I am happy with the pace at which this project is going, each day is progress and having new toys that are part of the same project always make it easier to concentrate.

Wow, fabulous detailing, this army is off to a great start so far! :)

Holy mother of the god emperors wet nurse - that has got to be the best Typhus model i've ever seen (High praise coming from me considering the git killed my Sanguinor with one slap recently!) Looking forward to seeing him painted!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments ;)

This week I took a little break from Typhus as adding all the rivets last week was making my eyes go funny haha

**Updates**

So instead I turned my attention to the core elements of the army, I built some more of the Death Guard and expect to get the third and final squad done by the end of this week, luckily I have been able to secure more than enough of the MK2 Sickle bolt guns to go around.

Considering that I only got these last Saturday, I am happy with the speed in which I have got them done (I work really slow usually). The Blight Drones are such lovely models that I had to do my own bases on them, as squadron I am sure they will look great once fully painted.

The "Lead" drone has by far the most dramatic base design as I really wanted to get some maw cannon shot in after reading up on Vrakks. Once I splash the ooze with some colour and water effects, It should come to "life" nicely.

From this angle you can see (another) the unfortunate guardsmen and also some of the skulls and bones poking out of the gunk. I really enjoyed making the mini trench, time (and space) permitting I would love to do a trench table of some sort.

This week should be the last week I spent on building infantry, and if all goes according to plan I will be putting paint on the figures by mid next week. Will all depend on whether the rest of my supplies turn up. Once this portion of the army is painted, I can begin work on the tanks :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys,

despite the lack of update this week there has been plenty going on. There were minor delays on supplies (volcanic ash etc) but everything is now accounted for. This weeks build plan has been shook up due to the arrival of the following items:

Forge World Great Unclean One

Forge World Daemon Prince

Chapter House Studios Heresy helmets

I am busily chopping away at the final squad of infantry and will start painting (something) this weekend. Pictures will naturally follow.

Finally managed to start some painting despite this week. I have been working on a "Big thing, little thing" principal, basically for every large item such as a tank or daemon, I need to paint a squad of troops after. Hopefully under this regime I will have something that ends up looking like a army rather than some nice looking items with grey troops hidden in the background

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad205/DiStudios/SS101388.jpg

The detailed bases have proven to be my downfall as they are getting in the way of everything and are a paint to hold. Enthusiasm had gotten the better of me when I first got the Drones so I opted to build everything then paint.

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad205/DiStudios/SS101392.jpg

I am pretty happy with the carapace, I think the drab green mixes well with the flesh tone I ended up picking.

http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad205/DiStudios/SS101390.jpg

I am having a really fun time with the weathering pigments, they break up the colours really nicely and add a more pastel look to my figures, which I am unuse too. I am looking forward to learning more tricks with these items in the future.

I still have at least two more stages of rust to apply and then there is the base and goo to be painted. I am aiming to have this Drone finished by the end of week and apply what I have learnt to the infantry next week.

Thanks for reading

now THAT is a Typhus! Grade A+ for the army on that one model alone.

That being said, the rest of the army is looking really good too. Love the use of the Chaos Warrior parts. Makes a very awesome change from the normal CSMs. Those blight drones look absolutely hideous and disgusting. Which considering they're Nurgle are very good things. Keep up the outstanding work. I'm adding a unit of Plaguies to my Chaos army and you're giving me some good ideas.

The pigments on the Blight Drones is very effective, did you find it reasonably easy to use? I've used Tamiya weathering master which doesn't need to be sealed but it doesn't seem to give quite as realistic a look that the powder does.

And Typhus is truly epic.

Thank you for the kind comments ;)

I have to say that the MIG weathering powders are very user friendly, using a brush I was easily able to control the the stroke area and also how much of the pigment placed.

I did use Tamiya previously on exactly the same basis of not having to use sealer but I find the effect left was a little thin compared to the MIG stuff.
