There's a tutorial in the Librarium that I did on exactly how I paint my Space Wolves. The only difference for the Wolfwing is that instead of applying the washes by hand (Leviathan Purple, Asurmen Blue, and Devlan Mud), I used an airbrush. This cut down on a lot of time.

Hey,

I'm sure you must be getting sick of answering questions about your space wolves, but could you explain the actual process you use for air brushing the washes on.

For example, does the whole model get a light coating of purple, followed area specific coats of the blue and then the whole model gets another light coat of the devlan mud?

Or are all the the washes only airbrushed onto the shaded areas and thats it?

And do you water them down or are they applied neat?

Really loving your work, it's inspirational, keep it up!

These images might be quite large, so I apologize.

The army is essentially completed, minus the Dreadnought Drop Pod (which still requires some battle damage and highlights).

I'd always thought Lamenters were an ugly army with a silly colour scheme... but THIS! This is mind-blowing: there's more cool and goodness in these miniatures than can be expressed with words. Thanks for sharing them with us!

Wow awesome work on the Lamenters. I really like the sandy yellow a lot. It looks way better than the chicken yellow you usually see Imperial Fists painted in. The checkers on the tanks would have popped out more if you did them in black/white instead of yellow/white IMHO.

Are you going mechanized all the way or do the Assault squads have jump packs as well?

Will you be painting the tyranids as well?

I dare say..... I like these Imperial Fists more than your wolves. Damage detail is superb and yellow is nice and "muted" and nice use of the color wheel.

They're Lamenters, brohammad.

But yeah, just awesome work. Practically impossible to critique... Enter the whole army to Golden Demon.

That's a lot of tanks! I love the lamenters, I wish I had the time/attention span to commit to painting armies so quickly but I'll settle for living vicariously through threads like this instead =)

Thanks for the tips about the hairspray chipping, I'm planning on giving it a go for my next miniature once it arrives.

I quite like the unit marking on the Vindicator. Very reminiscent of the World War II system, which may still be in use. I'm not as familiar with the modern military. Overall, quite a nice army. I might be able to do that if I undergo surgery on my hands, and live for another few centuries with no aging problems.

EDIT: Just noticed that the marking is on every tank. Very well done!

I have always loved the Lamenters, especially due to their somewhat untraditional colour scheme and markings (with the checks and the bleeding hearts). Good choice

Guess there is no point in repeating all the acolades given by other members but still, this is definitely a wonderful army. Especially the faded markings on the vehicles are beautifully executed. Your battle damage and weathering techniques are also very well executed, although I'm generally not really a fan of excessive battle damage nor the FW armour marks, and I'm not sure I think this armour mark fits the Lamenters.

The one thing I think lets this army down though, is the uniformity of the units in terms of upgrades and repeat choice of vehicles. I would guess that a beautiful army like this would be as much a hobby project as the development of a competitive-based army, so I would have loved more mixing of weapon upgrades across the squads. Also, more unique conversions amongst the squad members would have been nice (but this is probably enhanced by my mixed feelings about the FW stuff). Wonderful Librarian.

But all in all - congrats on a top notch job :D

At the risk of sounding like a noob, what is "zenithial highlight"?

Highlighting from a fixed point, and not all around. This does mean your shadows and highlights are much more "forced" and dramatic (and depending on your skill can make painting models easier and faster).

PS: Out of interest what airbrush set up do you use?

Simple Master-Brand dual action airbrush (G444 I think it is) with a compressor I bought off eBay (water filter, regulator, and auto turn off function, set at about 35 PSI).

For example, does the whole model get a light coating of purple, followed area specific coats of the blue and then the whole model gets another light coat of the devlan mud?

Or are all the the washes only airbrushed onto the shaded areas and thats it?

And do you water them down or are they applied neat?

Applied as if I was shading by hand. Only difference is I don't necessarily have the same finesse/control as I do with a brush, which I sacrifice for speed.

The checkers on the tanks would have popped out more if you did them in black/white instead of yellow/white IMHO.

*snip*

Are you going mechanized all the way or do the Assault squads have jump packs as well?

Will you be painting the tyranids as well?

I had tried Black and White check markings, and it looked awful. Made my vehicles look like cartoon taxi's and less like...actual battle tanks. As it is, the color choices are very deliberate. The yellow is strong and vibrant, drawing attention, while the black insets look like simple grey to black fades for some nice detail contrast. The white checks are strong enough to be seen from far away, but not too strong as to draw attention away from the yellow-black contrast (which black and white checks WOULD have done...this is also why none of the white markings are outlined black...creates a much more natural look).

However, the army is designed to reward someone for looking at the army, with detailed unit markings, the black insets actually being faded grey and black checks, caution markings etc. I've had friends pick up and spend 15-20 minutes just looking over a tank...and they'll do it repeatedly.

Pure mechanized. I don't like DoA (I prefer mechanized armies).

And yes, I will be painting the Tyranids (I had thought "into the jaws of the KRAKEN" would have given it away that they'll be painted in Hive Fleet Kraken colors). Y'know, since it's Hive Fleet Kraken that omnomnom's the Lamenters.

This is an amazing army DV8!

Can I humbly request a very brief recipe for the yellow? It's perfect for some an urban scheme I've been contemplating.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Apoch

I prime Krylon Camo Brown and Rust Red Primer (which forms the colors for my rust as well as the base upon which I airbrush).

I then airbrush a basecoat mix of 50/50 Scorched Brown and Iyanden Darksun (I HATE airbrushing Foundation paints).

Zenithal highlights airbrushed on progressively:

Iyanden Darksun

50/50 Iyanden Darksun/Golden Yellow

25/25/50 Iyanden Darksun, Golden Yellow, Skull White (basically the above mix, mixed 50/50 with Skull White).

After the chipping is done, washes are applied with Gryphonne Sepia and Baal Red, in a similar manner to my Space Wolves (as shading, and not just liberal washes).

More of a question than a critique but I'm interested in why you decided to go with all Mark 3 for their armour?

Aesthetically, the Mark 3 is the only Forgeworld armor I like. Maximus comes second, but that's only because I like the helmets. There's something very "brutal" about the Mark 3 armor that just appeals to me. Plus in the Badab campaign, boarding actions formed a predominant "venue" for alot of the missions, so the more front-heavy Mark 3 armor suited them well.

I quite like the unit marking on the Vindicator. Very reminiscent of the World War II system, which may still be in use. I'm not as familiar with the modern military. Overall, quite a nice army. Yes, there is actually a system to my numbering! I also tried to follow Codex markings as much as possible.

My army is the Lamenters 5th Battle Company, led by Captain Kerberos, Master of the Watch. Thus all the "5's" everywhere. And another reason to paint more checks!

My vehicles are broken down into two "pools", one belonging to the 5th Battle Company, and one belonging to the Lamenters Armoury. Razorbacks belong to the 5th Battle Company, and are numbered according to their squad (so I through VI). There are also markings associating each Razorback to the appropriate Assault Squad (correspondingly, squads I through VI), visible on the front right (front left looking dead on) of each vehicle, and the right kneepad (left kneepad looking dead on) of each marine.

Squad I: Black field, white skull

Squad II: Blue field, white skull

Squad III: Yellow field, red blood drop

Squad IV: Black field, red blood drop

Squad V: Black field, white X (not painted)

Squad VI: Blue field, white X (not painted)

As for the serials, they're broken down into three "divisions" (I researched as much as I could on WWII-era vehicle markings, and adapted the same system to my own approach:

XX - YY - ZZ

XX refers to the "pool" to which the vehicle belongs:

- 5BC is 5th Battle Company

- L stands for Lamenters

- /\ or triangle stands for Armoury

YY refers to the purpose of the vehicle.

- C is for Cavalry (that is Armored Cavalry, referring to a unit transport)

- R is for Reconnaissance

- HW is for Heavy Weapons

- ORD is for Ordnance

ZZ is the vehicle number, in relation to the "pool" (XX)

So Razorback Rhea is designated 5BC - C - 1, that is, 5th Battle Company, Cavalry, 1st Vehicle.

Vindicator Kharon is designated L/\ - ORD - 6, that is Lamenters Armoury, Ordnance, 6th Vehicle.

Obsessive, I know, but whatever.

There are also Badab campaign badges on the left and right side of every vehicle, seen behind the rear exhaust ports (it's the quartered heraldric shield).

I have always loved the Lamenters, especially due to their somewhat untraditional colour scheme and markings (with the checks and the bleeding hearts). Good choice :D

Thanks. There are a lot of aesthetic choices that I did make with the army, and I knew going in about uniformity and the compromise between the hobby project vs a competitive army.

First and foremost, I don't necessarily do armies as purely "hobby" projects. They just don't make sense economically. A small Necromunda or Mordheim gang/warband, sure. Blood Bowl, as an example, was a great one off and an excuse to convert and paint some Black Orcs. When I build armies though, it's with the purpose of gaming. Thus uniformity in weapons (or redundancy in weapons) is because that's what works for me in that particular army list. But from a purely modelling-oriented perspective, I just don't care to invest the time or money necessary for it, since I tend to build a new army once every 6 months (give or take).

Secondly, mechanized. The army had to be mechanized, with a heavy focus on vehicles, and not infantry. Why? I already own 6000 points of painted Space Wolves, with another 2000 points Paint in Progress. Able to field over 120 infantry, I can play virtually any infantry-based mechanized Space Marine list with my Space Wolves. The only way I could justify building another Space Marine army would be if it was something radically opposite to what I already own. Thus, an 1850 army that fields only 21 infantry and 12 vehicles (10 being fast vehicles, and 7 out of 12 being armor 13 hulls).

Third, the Mark 3 Iron armor. I know the Lamenters are a successor chapter, and wouldn't have ready access to an older, more archaic form of armor. However, the list is themed around the Badab campaign, where boarding actions and ship-to-ship or ship-to-station engagements were quite frequent. Coupled with the idea of armored assaults being launched into (for example) city breaches, I made the decision that the Mark 3 armor was better suited for the type of army I was building, with heavier frontal plating designed for cramped spaces and brutal space hulk-esque situations.

Fourth, the weapons. The army is all about maneouverability and finesse. I can't throw my marines willy nilly into situations and fight a battle of attrition, or to sweep enemy units away with superior numbers (like I typically do with my Space Wolves). My Lamenters army would fight with a particular mongol style that would make the Khan proud, and the infantry are there as mop up units. With that kind of finesse, I didn't think the more brutal hack-and-slash chainswords were appropriate, and acquired Grey Knight Falchions and Greatswords that better reflected the style of the army.

Lastly, the list itself is "redundant" because I like symmetry. I have two Heavy Bolter Razorbacks and two Las-Plas Razorbacks (arguably the best turret for Blood Angels), and my last two Razorbacks will be Twin-Las. If I could field two Vindicators I would, but points (and the fact that I think two Auto-Las Predators are more utilitarian and better with their range) means I only have one.

Of course, that isn't to say your critique/issues aren't unjustified. Merely presenting that I have thought through all the choices I made with this army, from both an aesthetic and competitive standpoint.

I don't think it's an either/or. Your points are valid and I can certainly understand the in-game arguments for the army build. My point was merely that, from my point of view, the army would have presented itself even better aesthetically with more variation - and looking more like something you, fluff-wise, would expect to see on a 40K battlefield. You know, stuff like a combination of power weapons/fists, combi-weapons, plasma pistols etc. for Sergeants, and a broader spectrum of weaponry on the squads. I know full well that this naturally compromises gaming effectiveness, and as such fully understand your choices :)

Your Space Wolves sound like every gamer's dream (what with the massive flexibility and all) :woot:

DV8 this Lamenters project is, simply put, amazing. The attention to detail is astounding, as is the workmanship. Got to admit I'm not a fan of the iron armour normally, but you have won me over with your boys in yella'. You can keep going back and finding new stuff each time you look. Congratz to you on an awesome army :P

edit - you must be fed up of painting check markings now.....!
