Maverike Primes Conversion challenge #4!

WarInHeaven

Recommended Posts

Greetings to all.

normally, this should be done by Prime, but due to real-life s*** he won't be capable to host this challenge

and, unwilling to let this series die, I temporarily took the hosting on me.

now you all understand why i'm running Prime's Challenge, let's get this show on the road! this is (the hijacked) Conversion Challenge #4!

the challenge: update a old model

basicaly, there are a lot of old models in the GW range, screaming to be redone, and that's exactly what you'll be doing

for exaple: by using the Chaos Terminator Lord kit to make a new incarnation for Abbadon, or bringing back an your old (as in removed) favorite character in a new, shining form

any model from 3th edition (or before) can be used, as long as it is B&C allowed. this includes characters (or even units) that are no longer used in 5th edition

however, no more than one model (familiars, thralls, watchers... not included) per entry, so if you want to resurrect the 1th edition terminators, you can post only one termie here, you're free to make more in your own free time, but only one can participate in the challenge.

note: no vehicles, walkers ore skimmers. it will be hard enough to pick as it is, so we'll try to keep the entries in roughly similar categories. jump infantry, bikers, normal infantry (inc. termies) and monsters are allowed, if there is any doubt if the unit/character you want to use is allowed, don't hesitate to ask.

For those of you who are new to this challenge, and want to know more about it, here is some information. If you have any additional question after reading this information, please post them in this thread: Interested in a conversion challenge?

Rules and Information for the Challenge:

What is this Conversion Challenge?

This conversion Challenge will be a 30 Day challenge where in each participant will create a converted model within the guide lines set down for the challenge. In this challenge, the guide lines are to represent a particular character.

The Challenge is recorded has having started Sunday the 3th of October, at 2pm Belgium time. All entries MUST be submitted prior the end time of November 3th, 2pm Belgium time. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS!

Limitation 1:

The final conversion must be able to legally represent the required character. This means you must adhere to the concept of “WYSIWYG” (What You See Is What You Get). this refers to weapons, armor, and most equipment (ie.: that you don't give him grenades, i can understand. but if he had a Iron Hallo, than i want to SEE an Iron Hallo.) also: all named/special equipment must be present, Including a named grenade!

Limitation 2:

The conversion must be appropriate for this forum (Remember, we are on BolterandChainsword.com after all)

Limitation 3:

All submissions should be based on game appropriate bases, in this particular case either a 25mm base or a 40mm base. Try to avoid putting the conversion on bases larger then 40mm.

Limitation 4:

NO PARTS/BITS OF THE ORIGINAL MODEL, NO EXEMPTIONS! further, only 25% of the model may be in metal, (so a torso OR the legs OR the head and the holstered sword ...ex)

the rest of the model may exist out of any material your hart desires: plastic, greenstuf, plasticard, resin, even modeling wood for all I care

Those are the only limitations.

When is this Challenge?

The Challenge began Sunday the 3th of October, at 2pm Belgium time. The challenge will run until November 3th, 2pm Belgium time. By November 3th, 2pm Belgium time, ALL entries must be in.

How do I submit my conversion?

Post pics of it. There are several free image hosting services available online including Photobucket and Flickr. You can upload your pictures to those services and then post links to them in a thread on this forum. If you encounter difficulty in getting the pictures uploaded, I encourage you to ask for help. For additional information on taking good pictures of your miniature, We suggest you take a look at the B&C's Photoshop Tutorial: Profession Pics of your Minis.

What do I need to submit?

Pictures. for simplicity sake, I ask that you submit 5 shots of your conversion.

1) Front or head on shot

2) A shot from the left side

3) A Shot from the right side

4) A shot from the back side

5) A 3-view shot from the front-right, or front-left. You're choice.

ALSO, POST A PICTURE OF THE OLD MODEL (CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE, THE GW-SITE IS A GOOD PLACE TO LOOK) TO COMPARE FOR ME AND THE OTHER JUDGES

Here are Examples of Each shot:

head on shot

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/head-on.jpg

The Camera is looking directly at the model and the model is facing right toward the camera.

Left Side shot

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/left-side.jpg

The Camera is looking directly at the model and the model is facing To the left edge of the frame. This helps give the judges a sence of the depth of the model. What may look like a flowing cloak from the front, could be shown to be a flat panel from the side

Back shot

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/back-shot.jpg

The Camera is looking directly at the model and the model is facing directly away from the camera.

Right Side

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/right-side.jpg

The Camera is looking directly at the model and the model is facing To the right edge of the frame. This helps give the judges a sence of the depth of the model. What may look like a flowing cloak from the front, could be shown to be a flat panel from the side.

3-view

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/3-view.jpg

This is the "Damn! Does this guy look hawt!" shot. It also helps give the judges a better sence of the model as a whole.

if the judges need a different shot of your conversion, we will contact you and ask for a specific shot.

Where do I send the pictures?

On this forum. Submit a post in this thread.

What about painting? As already stated, this is a Conversion contest. Not a Golden Daemon or Golden Bolter. You will receive no extra credit for a good paint job. In truth, painting your conversion before we announce the winners will probably hurt your chances at winning as painting tends to hides a conversion.

If you have any questions regarding this Challenge, please post them in this thread: Interested in a conversion challenge? This thread is to be used ONLY for submissions to the challenge.

best of luck!

I'm sorry, but limitations 1 and 4 are ridiculous. In particular, why exclude metal pieces other than to simply exclude experienced modellers? The challenge is to update an old model - why then ban the use of even metal parts, let alone metal models?

I whole-heartedly agree with that - if I remember correctly, previous conversion challenges have included metal models. In fact, one of them was to convert the Lysander model. Even the example model shown above in the rules is metal.

Not to mention that the "WYSIWYG" portion is going to be a bit of a pain for this current one, especially since the listen example of grenades means you have to buy two different boxes. Not to mention what if a model has hellfire ammunition? How would one model that? I was under the impression that marines, like us, paint the tips of the round to designate what type of round it was.

The only other rant bit I have on this is that the start date was today but the thread was started yesterday... how are we getting enough people to participate with such short notice? Or was there a different sign up that I missed.

You end up having people like me for instance. I want to do this one doing Cypher as my choice in older model to update. How how am I going to find out what he has for war gear besides in the picture on Games Workshop's online store? Ok judging off of that he has a plasma pistol, a bolt pistol, and a power sword... does he have grenades as well? Anything else he has that I am missing?

Mentioned not only once, but twice.

In defense of the limitations: It wouldn't be a Conversion Challenge without limitations.

Original Captain Cortez

Above is a pic of the original Captain Cortez model and I decided to see what I could put togeher quickly for this, without any muss or fuss and just using what I had laying about in the bitz box without picking up anything additional. WHile wanting to keep it simple, I wanted him to be a bit larger than the original plus more "dynamic" and taller than normal marines so I decided to use a "walking" Terminator legs as the base and added some terrain bits I had to the base to add height to him.

Where the other parts came from i am not positive although the shoulder pads and arms I think are from a command sprue. I thought I had some Imperial/Crimson Fist icons laying about but have not been able to find them yet, so I may try and sculpt them on with green stuff in a bit. Tha back banner is from Pedro Kantor which works to give him some appropriate iconography even if I do not find my icons or am able to sculpt more. Obviously this is nothing fancy but I think it works for what I want it to do and by positioning the arms along with the striding legs I think he has a pretty good sense of movement and size.

Worst case scenario I can always add the iconography when he is painted if I am unhappy with my sculpting and/or cannot find the icons I had. Anyways here is my quick and dirty conversion of Captain Cortez.

Okay, chill. I did read the text. "In this challenge, the guide lines are to represent a particular character" that is a quote from the rules. I would be representing Kaleb Daark and I would be updating him, from fantasy to 40k. I am merely stating my arguments for why he should be allowed, please take them into consideration.

Yeah, at first I was all up for this competition, but now you're starting to kinda act like a ass, dude.

Sorry, but count me out.

P.S. I think an update of Kaleb Daark would be B.A.

Considering this is a Power Armor forum you should probably stick to power armor miniatures.
