Okay this is two layers of Khorne Red, which used to be known as Scab Red. I still have Wazdakka Red(Gore Red) and Evil Suns Scarlet(Blood Red) left, although I think at this point it might make it to bright since it seems everything has gone up a shade. Also, the new Blood Red, isn't really red. It's more like a neon orange that thinks it's red. i just didn't realize when I bought it because I was looking at names, not colors. But, the final layer of Gore Red should do the trick. Unless you guys think it is unnecessary?

This is what I am aiming for.

This is where I am at. Please excuse the lack of black. That will be re-added later.

Okay so I completely bungled up the scales. I'm not going to lie about it or even sugar-coat it. They're so ugly they'd make Nurgle cringe.

But here it is, my first and only(for the very foreseeable future) Dragon Warrior. With an equipped Melta gun.

The lines of black paint were supposed to be scales, but I couldn't do it right. Then I just put two of the side pouches for WYSIWYG with the bolt pistol and grenades to kind of help cover it up. The bleached bone, well at first I wasn't going for it but the pure white helmet contrasted with his dark armor in the most extreme sense of the word. So two washes of Ogryn Flesh later and viola! He's color coordinated.

A dimly lit torch moves through the corridors, struggling against the oppressive darkness and unending cobwebs. It slowly navigates its way through the maze, passing many doors. Some are rich and golden, embedded with jewels and carvings of great heroes and events. Others are made of wood or stone, but no less impressive. As the light continued on, the cobwebs started to become thicker and stronger, the darkness began to encroach on the illumination, as if it were a hungry beast closing in on its meal. It finally stopped as the corridor dead-ended. At the very edge of the light, was yet another door. But this one was different. It was if it avoided perception and embraced the darkness, as if it never wanted to be found ever again. Where the other doors echoed the glories of life, this door was deep, dark blue material that defied definition. Images of wolves, crows, skulls, daemons and death twisted and wormed their way across its surface. Bronze-like claws and hooks sprouted from the sides and wrapped around the frame, giving it the appearance of a great maw, ready to swallow even more secrets. The bearer of the torch reached his hand forward and thrust it into a cunningly concealed hole in the door. There was a hiss-click of a needle plunging into his palm to draw blood. The blue-black material immediately constricted around his hand and drank several drops of the bearers blood before releasing him. Satisfied with its payment, it swung inwards, revealing a cavernous room in which sat a large metal safe. The torch-bearer walked forward and soun the lock of the great safe. Three clicks to the left. Two to the right. One more to the left. CLUNK! It too opened and revealed.....

That after a very long time away, this thread is now back in operation. Sadly, I do not have any completed models to show. Buuuuuut, I do have a WIP! To be honest, it's actually taken me about 4 or 5 days just to get this far simply because I am really really really taking my time on it.

I don't know what y'all think, but I believe my lightning has improved. Not say it's perfect, just better than my first mini. See?

Can't believe I missed your post here. Ok lets see. Lets start with camera photos. Its usually not the greatest idea to use a flash, try to use an outside source of light and set your flash off, as well as turn on the "macro" mode. Metallics don't look too bad. Lightning is still a bit thick, but better. What size brush are you using? Good job with the eyes though, they look good. Are you working on your blending with that light blue? Anyways keep it up, take your time and don't get discouraged.

Sadly, my phone doesn't have a macro setting :P But yeah, I forgot about the flash. Didn't really think about it going off since it was on auto. I am somewhat working on my blending. By that I mean I went in reverse and blanketed the model in the lightest shade of blue, and then went darker. For the lightning, I painted the bolts on the first layer of blue and then painted around that and tried to shape it as I could. The finished blue is actually a little lighter shade than the pure Necron Abyss. I sort of do and don't like it. I like the shade, it just doesn't fit my vision of the Night Lords. Umm, my brush sizes are a No. 30 1, and two No. 30 2s. One of the No. 30 2s, I cheated and glued the tip solid so I have a very fine edge brush for all of the nice little details. I sort of lost it before I started this mini and found it after the lightning was done. I'll try it again with the normal lightning tricks on the leg as soon as I finish the Abyssal upgrade.

That's how I did it with the first mini. I don't have enough light to see the difference between the Necron Abyss and the black primer so I did this so I could actually see. It's still a rather dark blue as you can see, I just liked the blue-black with more black than blue than the current shade as it fit into my perspective of the Night Lords. But I rather do like this blue as well.

I really like both schemes Kol, but I think you can vastly improve the way your minis look by thinning you paint more.

In my experience it is preferable to go over the same spot with 3 very thin layers of paint than with 1 thick layer.

Okay so yeah, it's been a while. Wish I could say it was spent painting... however I do have progress. Of sorts...

On Saturday I was unsuspectinlgy blessed with this little gift.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4407.jpg

I know the resolution sucks and it doesn't help that my sister's jewelry that has somehow invaded my room gets in the way, but that is the Chaos Lord, the Chosen, the Company Commander, Company Librarian, Deathwing, Ravenwing and a couple of regular Marines from the DV starter set. Some models still require assembly and originally I was going to go the Fallen route so many are, but then one of the tips of the Commander's wings fell off... :P Literally, it just fell off. It scared the crap out of me so bad I sliced an entire corner off of my thumb! So I have resigned my self to getting some modeling supplies(i.e. files) and getting rid of the DA iconography, although that won't be until Saturday. -Ish. I feel I have just found some converts for the Brotherhood of Darkness. They look like warrior-monks right?

Oh, and speaking of modeling;

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4404.jpg

Here's a somewhat better view of his face;

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4405.jpg

And in case you don't recognize him, this is what he was based off of;

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4406.jpg

That's right, the Chaos Aspiring Champion. Let's put it this way, I liked his axe. Unfortunately, his head, legs, and the back half of his torso all come in one piece. And I was feeling lazy with him. I had a blonde moment and forgot green stuff so Saturday when I get back I will get some because there is a rather large gap between his back and the jump pack. Although I did manage to give him a Raptor arm, shoulderpad and bolt pistol so I feel somewhat accomplished with that. :P

So with a DV set, some "conversions" and a kitbash in my future immediate future, hopefully my painting will start back up. But please feel free to sacrifice some cattle for spiritual motivation.

Oh also, I feel the need to say something as I think I have made it painfully obvious I am an aspiring Night Lords player. My theme is going to be corruption. Despite the title, it won't be people who are following Chaos. At least people who realize it. Rather, these will be Night Lords who have used the power of Chaos to gain even more power. It is this thirst that has led to their "downfall". They have welcomed in Renegades from other factions(the lone Dragon Warrior and the future Brothers of Darkness) and this fall has manifested itself through mutations and gifts such as a daemon axe among other things.

Oh, and I have finally come up with an "official" designation. What once was the 33rd Company, is now led by the Raptor Cult, the Shrieking Death. As one of the smaller Cults, it has taken control of the 33rd through a murder-duel between Lords and is now seeking to build the rather diminished Company to attain new glory and strength, hence the acceptance of Renegades as it adds to the body count. Their only goals are power and to kill. That's it. Not raiding, not to rebuild the Legion, not nothing except what they see as power.

More in fluff and minis(hopefully painted ones) will be coming soon, like Saturday or Sunday hopefully.

Also, any tips on greenstuff would be greatly appreciated as I have never messed with it before.

Okay, originally I was planning on getting more done but that just was not meant to be. But at least I finished my Raptor Lord! Thankfully, I didn't have to use greenstuff, but would still like any advice as I will need it for some of the DV miniatures simply because GW lied(no surprise there) about the snap fit and I need something to fill in the gaps. So help is still appreciated. Anyway, here is the Raptor Lord. Painting will come soon.

I'd like to think that's not too bad for a first time kitbash but I need comments and critique! All is welcome!

Looks good man, though if you're still looking for gw paints to replace Necron Abyss, Kantor Blue is quite decent.

Yeah I know. i'm just using up the Necron Abyss I have. No paint wasted. My only problem is that I don't have enough lighting to actually see the difference between the Necron Abyss and the black primer, although eventually I will get back to persevering through these trials.

Looks great so far Kol, can you show us some pics of the gaps you're talking about? Might help with advice. When you do start painting this fella, make sure you thin your paint down. Always use thinned down paint over thick stuff. Try dipping your brush in your water pot then dip it in the paint pot. Remember multiple light coats are far better than one thick one.

Well here is the most obvious one. I seem to remember more of them having trouble but I can't seem to find anything now except this guy.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4420.jpg

It's a little hard to see, but that white line running through his lightning claw is actually where you can see the box through his fist because the two parts didn't go together well. Note, I have not glued anything yet.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4419.jpg

It's the same on the other fist, I just didn't get the same angle on it. There's a few more in the set and while I don't have the whole set assembled, I was told to expect more.

The gap between the Lord and his Jump Pack was more or less the way I was trying to put it together. After a little lining up, it came out better than I thought. Kind of hard to get a pic of the join though.

So, y'all remember that mini that I was painting and he was just all sorts of botched up? Well guess what, he is done.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4433.jpg

And quite possibly I am more ashamed of him than the scales on that Dragon Warrior.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4434.jpg

See what I mean?

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4435.jpg

Caption: Grr! Argh!

Oh, and speaking of the Dragon Warrior

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/bleachit54/IMG_4436.jpg

I just realized that I unwittingly created the Double Dragon Brothers!

I plan on this mini being a stepping stone as I move forward. may I never repeat something of this level.

Your lightning looks better. Keep it up - that really is the hardest part. One bit of advice I'd like to offer is one you rarely hear around here. Try and keep caffiene intake and physical activity in a different part of the day then when you paint. The shakes from muscle fatigue, adrenaline and/or caffiene can be a huge hinderance to a steady hand. Not saying this is your problem per se but it effects alot of people and they never think of it. When I painted I did so in the evenings, hit the gym in the mornings and even steered clear of video games for about an hour beforehand to make sure those twitch reflexes had settled.

Is that for the lightning because to be honest, I like the twitchy lightning. Looks authentic. If it's for everything else..... I don't know if I could give up caffeine. *runs to a corner with a Mountain Dew* My prrreciousssss

lol not for the lightning specifically. Tbh I would tense my fingers and go in with a twitchiness on the lighting as well. I had a very fine brush and control over the amount of paint leaving as i dragged the tip however. Either way, was just food for thought.

Really guys it depends on the person for lightning. I find it easier to relax my fingers and hold the model loosely. Kol I'd just try out different techniques on something you don't really care about, get a feel for how you paint your lightnings. I think these look very good for starting out. I think this new guy looks very good, a large improvement over the Dragon Warrior. At least it looks like it from your pictures. Regardless you're making progress!

For the spacings between the claws on the LC guy, I'd just paint it and see how it looks after, or try getting some liquid GS or just GS to fill it in very carefully.

Both of you do have good points. Hmm, I might try to glue it together and then if I have to, go over the gap with liquid GS. If I have to. If I don't, here comes the paint. But I'm puttin off the DV Guys, the Raptor Lord, my Raptors and my Havocs(and the hopefully not terrible converted autocannons) until I finish off my first two squads of basic CSM, who also happen to bear the dubious honor of being the Guinea pigs for my painting skills, as shown.

Kol, you are steadily improving, and that has to feel really good! I think it's smart to practice some more on a couple of squads of rank and file CSM before you move onto the cool stuff from DV and your Raptor Lord though! One thing that I do when I paint my lightning is use extremely thin paints! So thin that the first blue layer barely shows up, then I go over the same line a couple of times until it shows well enough. Thin I'll move to my light blue, and wont thin quite as much, but still keep it thin enough that it flows from the brush with very minimal tip contact.

I'll keep doing this with each successive colour until I reach white which I don't thin down much at all, and I only apply it to the areas where the bolt splits in two.

Keep practicing, as you can see with what you have done already, you will improve very quickly!
