Angels Dark Angels; reinforcing the roster

I agree woth elmo that they are looking fine as they stand but a quick dry brush would make the armour much nicer. I did my DW by spraying them white, washing with sepia then drybrushing progressively lighter with bleached bone then deneib stone then skull white. Its super simple to do and turns out great!

@Elmo : thanks for the list, let me run down this sucker!

1: when you take the photos try putting a piece of white paper behind the model. This will help the camera to focus on the model and not any other items you have on your desk.Never even thought of that. I just figured I was using my cell phone camera and there was nothing much I could do for it

As you get more serious with your photography you can make your own lightbox very cheaply (just do a google search and loads pop up).

Mine is simply 3 cheap desk lamps for all round light and a white back and sides to help reflect the light ion the model. This sounds like a pretty awesome thing, and I may look into it post-haste

2. The wash on the termies is too heavy for me. I know everyone has their own way of doing bone white and it can be a complete pain to get right (for a great example of how good it can look check out Stobz's work of art on his thread ;) ) Being honest, I actually agree. For normal armour I would hate this wash. but I wanted to portray that these suits have been around for 10k years. and since I don't know the exact date of the Plains World incident I'm putting it maybe 1k after the heresy. and thats my main reason for being so heavy on the wash.

This is how I do mine - it gives a good finish and is fairly quick.

i) Spray with Army painter Skeleton Bone making sure you use light coats at the recommended distance. If you dont have sprays use multiple diluted down layers of Ubhasti Bone.

ii) Use Agrax Earthshade in all recesses and armour joints then touch up any spillage with Ubhasti Bone.

iii) Mix Ubhasti and white about 50:50 and drybrush over all the bone areas

iv) Mix Ubhasti and white about 25:75 and drybrush over the armour edges

v) use white and a very dry drybrush to give a final highlight to the very edge of the armour

Then crack on with the detailing. If you want you can then do some weathering but I don't normally do it. :P

Guess who's formula just got a copy-pasta treatment? haha. I will give this a shot on some of the DV termies I have as they arent painted yet.

3. Not all negative :P - the dread is looking good - when you are doing text, try using a very watered down paint or an ink/wash - or even better still invest in a micro pen. As I am way to afraid to try and paint text or anything i actually use a Sharpie pen but I will look into the Micro pen as it sounds even more detail oriented. my big problem with the text on the dread was that I forgot when I wrote the stuff (not that great of a memory, blame my extravagant youth) and proceded to wash the model... and the ink was still a little wet :o but I'm kinda glad now that it got messed up a little bit as you told me about the micro pen.

Your gold is nice and magnetised arms are the way to go ;)

Thanks, my gold is super boring tho. All I did was base it black, then I hit it with the bone (as I was using one of those large "paint everything always" brushes from army painter.) then just two coats of Auric Armour Gold. and then a light wash of nuln oil

Sorry if this seems harsh - I don't mean to be :D

Not harsh at all man. if I didn't want opinions or tips from some of the best painters I've seen, I probably would have started the post by crying about how I cant take criticism or opinions, so please just type "nice paint job" and leave the thread  If I can come close to you and stobz i will be an ecstatic man and raise many a fine brews in your honour haha

Another option is to take photos in natural light. I don't have a lightbox, and so setting up my "photobooth" is a royal pain in the ... - it involves paper, tape, stools, lamps etc....

Sometimes for a quick wip photo, daylight is the way ahead. I don't want to derail things by posting my stuff, but this photo was taken outside in natural light on my phone without any problems :P

Painting text is not that hard. Use a brush with a good thin tip and not too flexible. I prefer to actually write my text on very lightly in pencil before painting it in. When you do text, regardless of how, to get it as even as possible, first always identify the "center line" of where you are writing as best as possible and always start from the middle letter of what you are writing. Go a letter to either side after doing that letter. If you have an even number of letters, place the space in the center and then start with a letter to either side. Also, try using Scorched Brown/Rhinox Hide instead of stark black, it's a little more "realistic" on both weathered parchment and miniature items. Stark black is an extremely rare color to have in nature and just shows up too much on miniature parchments IMO. It doesn't look real.

ok!, Tartaros squad is done!

while I plan on using them as my command squad, I haven't figured out just how I want to make the standard bearer holding the banner, yet still have it obvious he has a TH/SS as I hate back banners. and with the DW command squad box set coming soon, I plan on hacking the apothecary arms up to make it simple for that one... so for now I am using their shields to differentiate.

and the pics I took look like doody, even with a white background the flash seems to have drowned out the images, so I will be waiting till tomorrow for natural light. by then I hope to have the dread done too! stay tuned for pics!

I did some test fits with the plastic banner and storm shield arms and every time it ended up with the shield behind the banner. It just seems wrong that a chapter relic would end up in front of a shield. I thought on it a bit and am now considering putting the storm shield on the same arm as the hammer. From everything I've read on storm shields the protection is from the energy field and not the physical shield.

Why not just plant the banner pole in the ground? I prefer it gripped, but, with modelling / aesthetic issues such as yours, the planted option is equally viable.

well that is definitely an option that i haven't thought of before. I'm just going to wait for the new sets to come out and see how they made their standard bearer and see what I can do with that. because I suck at freehand, so I do love me some moulded banners as it looks super sweet when it's done and I can claim "hand painted" hehe

Kind of a small picture but it looks like the banner is going to be back mounted.

Hmmm good spot Cypher 102.

  • 1 month later...

So lets update this for my jan vow/lpc vow. The contemptor is ready to go, and it's an old face with some new guns (I put Namaan as the pilot because I I can't take him as a bad ass codex entry I'll take his as a bad ass dread. )

I used him as the master because his head came attached and I didnt feel like trimming it.

I got some nice dynamic poses on those (i think at least) but this next one is the Master body, which is pretty static as his arms gave him the active look

I'm not actually sure where the autocannons came from, my buddy gave them to me. And I really like the way these guys came out, I might redo the tartaros pattern to have the dark wash instead of the sepia one they have now.

Jeeze, aren't you super needy... :P

LOL, yeah, probably. :D

They look very nice. I do like the grungy effect they have, it is very different from a lot of the methods you usually see (battle damage of various sizes, factory model clean, etc). These guys look like they have been through the muck and come out the other side ready to kick some more Xenos and Heretic butt! I also like the red tabards/robes they have, it provides a nice contrast.

I do think those auto cannons are FW ones.

Very nice, AngelVeto, cool unit well done!
