Thanks chaps!

So you can have an "accident" you after you give me your mini's in the will....

That's a Malevolent attitude you have there ;)

Brother Agonistes

Agonistes was an unremarkable line Astartes, drawn from Terra, who served in forty campaigns before meeting his end during the Siege of Terra, in combat against the Iron Warriors.

Agonistes is pictured wielding the tried-and-tested Umbra pattern boltgun. Like most later examples, this boltgun was manufactory printed, rather than hand-crafted by the Magi of Mars as the earliest example had been.

Under the command of Captain Katafalque, Agonistes should bear company and tactical symbology on his left pauldron. Short-term replacement battle plate is the likely cause.

A combat blade maglocked to his thigh, Agonistes is clearly wearing a hybrid suit: Mark II armour had no maglock system and relied on scabbards, pouches and sheaths for equipment and weaponry. By appearance, this is a recent change: Agonistes still retains additional unnecessary ammunition pouches.

This angle shows the Legion symbol – sadly rather weathered during the events of the Siege – and an oath of moment tucked under the hip guard. The raised shoulder trim, characteristic of Crusade armour, offers increased protection from bullets as well as blades. However, it also cut down on peripheral vision, and was dispensed with in armour from Mark IV onwards, as better materials allowed the same level of protection without the drawbacks.

Technique

The yellow is a Iyanden Darksun/Golden Yellow mix over grey undercoat; shaded with a wet blended mix of Scorched Brown, Abaddon Black, Liche Purple and Calthan Brown, and highlighted with increasingly light mixes of Golden Yellow and Bleached Bone.

The dark mix sounds complex, but it's basically just a very dark brown. I added the Liche Purple because there's a bit of it in every part – even the metal. Speaking of which, I decided to man up and learn how to paint metal, so there are quite a lot of layers on there. I painted everything Abaddon Black, then used Boltgun Metal to cover it entirely. Once dry, I washed it with Badab Black and allowed it to dry. I then picked out the midtones with a mix of Boltgun Metal and Mithril Silver, added some glazes of Liche Purple and allowed to dry. This was then washed with Badab Black again and allowed to dry (there was a lot of waiting!) before I blended out highlights of Mithril Silver.

I'm happy with the freehand, too. I decided I wasn't going to use any pure white or pure black, so the blacks are the same dark mix, and the white is a mix of Skull White and Dheneb Stone.

The weathering is simply very light sponging of the dark mix, with pure Bleached Bone used to pick out highlights at the bottom for the trompe l'oeil effect. I really had to resist going over the top or adding any other markings (apart from his name), as I couldn't remember what goes on an Imperial Fists' right shoulder.

Ps. what does it say on his chest?

It's simply his name; Agonistes.

Are there more in progress?

There certainly are. In the short term, another nine to make half of a 20-man tactical squad.

They look excellent, Apologist  I remember seeing your old IF's and thinking that it was a shame that you probably wouldn't touch them again. How glad I am that I was wrong :tu:

Looking forward to the next update!

Ludovic
