Gologotha Crusade Army

Recommended Posts

I've started a Crusade army because God knows already having two full 40k armies isn't enough. Any way this is my WIP of a tactical squad of the Mentor Legion that is attached to the Crusade.

The Crusade badge is on the right knee. Battle Honors will be "coins" attached to the shoulder pads. I haven't put the chapter badge on yet. I'm not sure if I want to paint them or get some decal paper and use the ones from the "decal project".

Here is my vet sgt and others. I only have the first coat of white on him. I modelled him with a new style of helmet and auspex on his pack. Mentors are supposed to have the latest and greatest gear. They will be standard codex troops, but will look like they have something new.

I expect to be done with this squad in several weeks, then I can start on their Rhino/Razorback/Predator. Got to love them magnets  .

I've finally finished the squad of Mentor's.

Here is the squad with one extra Heavy Wpn trooper.

I would like to thank Tubal and everyone else that helped with "The Decal Project". I really appreciate all the work you guys did on getting those decals set up.

why do those grey models look so weird? is it just the flash?

as to bases, if you mix several flocks/sands(sizes as well) together you get a more natural look to them

and finally the models themselves, right now they are kinda messy, take a bit more time and straighten those edge highlights out, messy highlights look well..messy

also make sure your paint is fully covering, nothing is worse than having primer, first layer. whatever, showing through your paint

they should look great after cleaning them up a bit ;)

The unpainted models have the grey primer on them. When I got the primer I got a gloss finish instead of matte. I didn't realize it until I had sprayed them. After putting color on them I don't think the primer was a problem.

Your idea for the base is very good and I will do that.

I am going for an extreme highlight for the paint. The intended viewing distance is from table top. I left the primer to be used as a highlight instead of using a wash or paint.

sorry i meant your layers of paint, if you are actually using the primer or not doesnt matter to me, but you painted on the green, and the primer is showing through the green in places, this makes them look messy, rather than clean painted

Starks333: I liked the base idea and did get a smaller size to put on the base and they do look alot better, thanks.

I finally got their rhino done. I used a product from a train modeling store to weather/dust the rhino. The look I was going for was a red/rust type dust on the rhino and the legs of the marines. The rest of the Crusade will be based like this (Ad-Mech Forgeworld). What do you think?

wow, i'm amazed at your rhino! It's just so...white, and bright, and clean looking(aside from the dust). Not really digging the yellow eagles though, theyre to yellow, IMHO you should have done a darker shade first and then drybrushed with the current shade. gah im seriously impressed with that white...

I did put on a darker yellow on the eagle first then a lighter yellow after, but you are right. There isn't enough contrast on the plastron. Looking in "How to paint Space Marines", they did the contrast also. I wasn't able to figure out what they used for the base color and I just guessed. If you get a little closer you can tell where the shading is however it's not painted to the same extreme as the rest of the marine.

Live and learn.

Am tech boy 1 "oh crap i forget to put eyes on this new helmet now its useless"

Am tech boy 2 "It doesn't matter, its looks pretty so just overprice it and everything will be fine, thats what microsoft did in the 21st century"

Anyway before im mugged by 360 fans (all 4 of 'em) i get back on subject. The only prob i have with the rhino its its too white and looks a bit falt. Diggin the normal marines though

you used dry pigments?

if so, if you mix it with paint, say to mix a darker version of your colour, you can make it look like wet, or you can apply it bunched up together

if you onyl wanted dust, try applying lighter amount all over, dust gets everywhere

looking good

I really like the feel of the marines. I think the "crusade buttons" give them a really distinct look. I think the "dust" effect looks good, but maybe a darker shade towards the bottom of the mini's would have a more natural look. In real life tanks crush sand down to a fine powder. It gets all over everything. After walking through it long enough (yea, I'm a crunchy), it cakes up on equipment. On the boots it is thicker and darker. I'm not sure if that was the effect you were trying for, but it was the first thing I noticed.

+I think Magnus meant to type "flat". I have to think that white would be the hardest color to highlight. It's not like you can add a little white to lighten the color

I look forward to seeing more of the army. Keep them coming.

Better days,

i did mean flat but i had only just woken up (at 1.30) White is known as a :P :cuss  to paint on large flat surfaces but i have found that if you use a 90% white and 10% grey mix on the flat areas yyou can highlight with poure skull white without it looking to grey.

I added the dust to the marines, here's a better look at them. Pics don't do them justice.

I also thought exhaust should be on the rhino and I put some on it as well.

I'm done with the Mentor squad and it's Rhino. When I get the bits I'll also make it into a Razorback.

Now though the Dred in the box is calling my name. This is going to be a Ven Dred from the Black Templar Chapter. He has plenty of seals and medals and I tried my hand at some green stuff. Let me know what you think.

the fire effect on the AC could end up fantastic or really wierd depending on your painting.

Apart from that, Im really not a fan of the stock model gw does after seeing the fw ones, but still if you're keen on working with this one I'd say lose the huge flag and shorten the powerfist claws a bit, maybe lose the huge searchlight aswell, and definitly keep the long beutiful scribings on the arms. btw what are those 3 greenstuff circles on the ac arm?

keep up the nice work =)

Well it took me long enough but I have most of it painted. The flash on the camera looks like it washes out the flash of the assault cannon. I just have a few minor touches, the back banner, and the "dusting" to do to him.
