Desert Eagles wip

Recommended Posts

Had such great response with my desert eagles that i thought i might try posting a conversion i've been working on for quite some time here aswell. This will, atleast for now, be my commander when finished. I'm pretty happy with how he looks right now. Need to tidy up some things here and there aswell as sculpting a glove for the hand on the steering bar. I must say it's rather fun pimping spacemarine rides. Anyway, included 2 earlier versions aswell. Please let me know what you think. Too much bling or just enough?

Also, do you guys drill holes for the exhaust pipes? I'm not sure wether that will look good or not, and it's pretty much work to reverse it if it looks bad...

As always, this is a very pleasant work swowing mastery not only in poses but in GS and "bitz know-how" too (with some fascination for Tyrus shields :P ).

Giving such bulking bikes some dynamism is a pain, gratz in succeeding so well.

looks very nice, i rather like the honour guard one.

are they all gonna be used ?

ps. why arent they riding dewbacks?

Lol, yeah, dewbacks would have been interseting and very fitting to my colour scheme. :)

The two bottom pics is earlier versions. They might be used as veteran sergeants with other bikes.

I like the 2nd the best. It has a great upper torso with alot of personality. The only issue on it will be the legs. You'll have to dress them out a bit with some added armor on the greives and the like.

i don't think its to much bling. I'm actually surprised you took off the chappy bike wings from the hood shield. Are you going to re-apply them else where on the bike?

Its coming along great and I dig that you look at several different load outs and aspects of a model before proceeding. Much respect. :pinch:

Well, i can't really put my finger on it, but something didn't feel quite right with that second version (the cut of ultramarine champion) i felt it didn't look quite right from all angels. One thing that did bother me was that helmet. While i really do love it on it's own, i felt i got to much with a banner aswell, and decided to go a bit "less is more" (altough, there's a lot of bitz atached to the later one aswell, but relatively less is more, if you know what i mean).

But as i do like the champion model, it will probobly be used for something else.

I think those chappy wings are rather so-so. Didn't even think twice to cut them off. However, they're in my bitz box, i might someday find good use of them. Hehe, otherwise i sometimes think of myself as completly retarded. I go off and buy rather expensive metal and plastic minis, and the very first thing i do is to cut them up in pieces...

I understand about the UM champ but I tend to go for more detail than anything else sometimes. Especially when theres very little sculpting necessary. If you just kit out the legs on him a bit more it'll look great IMHO.

To be different (and i'm giving this away because its an idea i'm using for my newer RW bikes) is to take off the top 2 exhaust pipes and place wings (chappy wings), or equipment or flatten the area out for more symbol icon space or to make it more sleek. Most motorcycles i've ever seen need one exhaust, maybe 2. Four is a bit much.

Just an idea.

Nice idea, i like it. Altough, in general, i tend to try bulking them out rather than going for a sleek apperance. I might try that approach on another charachetr riding a bike, a sergeant perhaps. I'm gonna use swift as the wind as my trait. Bikes are really fun to zoom around the tabletops with aswell as i really enjoy converting them and adding some extra bitz.

About that champ...i might try posing him on the bike a few more times. Many things on that bike are still removable. I use superglue so that i easily can change my mind without doing much harm to the plastic parts. But i'm almost certain i'll go with this latest rider over the that one. But i appriciate your thoughts.

As a gesture in returning an idea i can give you a shot of my attackbike (also wip, but further away from being ready to paint. Needs some GS and possibly one or two more bitz). My aim is to make the riders look a little bit more protected from enemy fire, fleshing it out a bit so they don't look so naked. After all, this will be the mini who will last the longest in an ordinary bikesquad, save for attached charachters and maybe the sergeant...

Nice use of bits. Wow! That an expensive attack bike.

I have all these extra dread sarc lids and i was going to use them as combat shields for my vet squad (almost like adeptus arbites with a view port for fighting) but thats a brilliant idea to use it on a bike like you did. It mimics the speeder shield for the pilot. And the shielded gunner with targeter is awesome as well.

Thanks!! :pinch:

Thanks, and you're welcome! :pinch:

And yes, my minis tend to be on the pricy side. Altough, for that attackbike i sort of had all the extra bitz already. But it was kind of hard to convince myself to cut one of those precious combat shields in two parts...

Maybe as another way of doing the sarc lid on the bike is to cut the lid as you have done but then attach and angle out the rest of the lid to become the handle bar hood. Then model the light untop of the fender. You get a cool pre-molded icon plus the look of the view port as the attack bike. And the attack bike you have now could use the rest of the lid as the top of the front wheel fender. Just cut and replace the plastic area of the current fender.

Just some thoughts. :pinch:

Yeah i can see where you're going with that. Needs a little effort, but it could work. Guess it can turn into a really pricy conversion if it turns ugly tough. Going to be a hard time salvaging the bike if one cuts to much in the bikes frame aswell as cutting up the handle bar hood.

Have been re-working some of my other bikes. Started assembling a sergeant to go with my bikes that will accompany my commander. While doing that i tried out some extra apochetary parts and really liked the result. Only trouble is that the squad suddenly got even more expensive, pointswise, aswell as me having to chose 2 of them nasty drawbacks. Anyway, here's lots of pics of my bikes. No major conversions, but some various details that hopefully will make them look slightly diffrent from whats mostly fielded. They all need to have gaps filled with gs aswell as their bases sorted out. C&C would be welcome!

I like these quite a lot--attention to detail, the bolters, and the shields. My only (constructive) criticism: the small, round White Scars shields don't fit with the rest of the squad's medieval European shields -- I'd replace the WS bucklers with medieval-style bitz.

P.S. My vote is for drilling out the exhaust bores -- looks much more real. If you do make a mistake, you might be able to refill the hole with "Brown Stuff" Kneadatite, which dries harder than Green Stuff. You could then re-drill into the brown stuff and probably get a clean-edged hole.

My Ravenwing are very very jealous... Your Squad Members look just as good as your commander. Now its going to be the problem of making the commander stand out because you did a wonderful job on all of them! :)

They're going to look amazing with your painting skills. Can't wait.

** the imperial eagle halfed on the gas tanks is awesome. Brilliant idea! I'm sorry but I'm stealing that one.

You've got a point there Wendigo. Problem is i'm starting to run low on cool shield bitz and may have to order some new... no issue really, i'm in no rush to get these finished, and i gather a bike with rider will take me something like 30 hours minimum to paint unless i'm on some sort of magic roll. Anyway, anybody got suggestions for other nice shields in the proper size to be fitted on a bike?

Well, Master Toddius, with that kind of flattering you may steal as much as you like. :) I'm satisfied with that one myself. The eagle i used is the large one from the rhino/razorback sprues. Unfortunatly i cut loose the wings first planning to do something else with them before the gastank idea hit me... Lucky for me the wings fit rather well with the body of the eagle inspite of being cut loose. Just a small gap that i need to sort out somehow.

Oh, i live in Umeå aswell. Tomtebo to be precise. I'm sort of making a comeback into the hobby after a decades break (altough, it's closing in on a year since i first dusted of some of my old paintjars, so perhaps still calling it a comeback is pushing it :tu: ) Anyway, for moment we're just a few friends throwing some occasional skirmishes, but when i get this army up to some strenght i may muster some curage and bring my sorry self down to Fantasia (or that local club) for some punishment. :D

Not sure if this should go as a seperate topic in the liber astartes section, but it felt silly to start yet another thread about my desert eagles. And it's sort of a painting question anyway... Since i'm going to use swift as the wind as one of my traits, any bikers will hardly go in a fast attack slot, as they will be troops or elites in my force organisation. So what badge should i paint on their shoulderpad? The crossed arrows (like the fast attacks normaly have) or does a normal tactical arrow make more sense? Personaly i'm thinking maybe the DA's tactical arrow would look cool, but as for fluff they won't be of DA geneseed. Which leads me to yet another question. Based on the looks alone, what primarch would be most suitable for my marines in your mind? Dorn perhaps?

I'd appriciate any opinions.

As for progress on these bikes i have only primed one of them yet, and i'm awaiting a order from BW-bitz for some new shields to complete the two bikes with ws-shields in the pictures above. Ordered a bunch of usefull bitz, so i'll have to see what looks best, but i'll most likely put some blank termieshields on them.
