Legion of the Damned Army Log

Those of you who frequent Warseer might've seen some of these images, but in wanting to get more feedback, I hope it's okay to post a condensed version of it here.

Long story short, I've recently accumulated a ton of models to remake a new Legion of the Damned army, since losing all my stuff about 5 years ago. 5 years without picking up a paintbrush leaves me lacking in the skills department, considering I wasn't very experienced in the first place. :)

Anyways, any and all criticism is welcome. I really want to do this army justice so any advice will be absolutely appreciated. If you'd like to see the complete log with WIP pics, a link is in my sig.

The haul:

The first test models:

Trying to decide between the LotD fire scheme (backwards) and realistic fire:

The "cooling magma" bases:

All the bases (sans the two 60mm dreadnought bases):

The second pair of test models, trying out highlighting for the first time and figuring out the eyes:

Just finished cleaning the plastic sprues and troopers, so hopefully I can start on the first squad today. Thanks.

I can't take credit for the idea. I happened upon it on one of the issues of Black Gobbo.

But it is all greenstuff, with a molded plasticard layer on top of it. I just shaved the edges with a hobby knife, primed black. Then built up from red gore, blood red, blazing orange, then fiery orange. I figured it's easy for a newbie. :)

I say you give yourself little credit, as these Legion of the damned are really cool on the painting front. Nice highlights, flame look right. My not be Games day style but they are really cool.

Again looking cool & looking forward to seeing more. So how many pts are you planning the over all force.

They are looking great.

The only area I would consider extra work are the bone areas, which dont look highlighted (maybe the pics?).

I would give them a wash of very, very diluted scorched brown, a drybrush of bestial brown, a thinner drybrush of 50/50 bestial brown/bleached bone, a final drybrush with bleached bone and a final highlight on the most raised areas with skull white. - Or similar to taste!

Thanks for the replies guys!

I have no idea about the points right now... Not even sure what rules they follow (eg: Chapter Approved 2004, or a Space Marine force with traits). It'll be a total of 2 Tactical Squads, 2 Assault Squads, 2 Devastator Squads, misc HQ, 2 Rhinos, 2 Dreads, and 2 Land Raiders (I think LotD aren't supposed to have those, but I love the tank model). So probably in the realm of 1500 - 2500 right now?

Appreciate the C&C Seleucus! Yeah I'm struggling on the backpacks and skulls/bones trying to figure out what's right. Like the GW guide said they're bleached bone, but all the pics I've seen look pretty solid white to me. What I did was prime Black. Thin Bestial Brown. Dry brushed thinned Bleach Bone, and then a couple of thin layers of White. Trying to keep it as simple as possible without having to really mix colors.

I'll have to try your tips on a test mini. Thanks again!

dare i ask how much this all cost.... i rember seeing boixs of LOD for amazing amounts on ebay

Uh, between Bartertown and ebay, I'd say that just the LotD (not the tanks, bits, etc) ran about $350 if I remember. There were like 3 small transactions for squads, and two big batches of stuff. I sold off the extra and made about $100 of it back. The supplies however are a different story. :/ Winsor Newton brushes, rolls of green stuff, base material, paints, and a few extra things for later like brass rods (shell casings) and plasticard (extra armor etc,) probably hit about $200 alone :) Hard to find deals on those things.

Anyways looking at the receipts and stuff. Just under $600 at the moment. >_>

You mean that the lava field is plasticard? Or it's GS ontop of plasticard? Either way, they look very cool.

And I'd agree with Magnus the Red in that the realistic fire looks uch better than the "normal" colour scheme.

I think your bone looks pretty good right now, even though it does seems more white in these photos. Is that flash? Or are they really that light? I have an alternate way of doing bone if you're interested. Not good for RAF unless you're block painting, but looks good (In my opinion) if you want to spend time over it.

Starting from Scorched Earth, add on THIN layers of...

10% Scorched Earth 90% Graveyard Earth leaving only a small amount of the scorched earth in the recesses

100% graveyard earth leaving the only visible in the deepest parts

75% graveyard earth 25% bleached bone

25% graveyard earth 75% bleached bone

100% bleached bone

Final highlights of 75% bleached bone and 25% skull white.

You can skip stages if you wanted, but I find the graveyard earth transitions to Bone better than the bestial brown. if you want an interim step for characters, commando khaki fits pretty well.

Looking forward to seeing more of these - I always loved the Legion of the Damned.

Cheers

Looking great - I think just about everyone has at some point wanted to do a LoTD army, cool to see one actually come to fruition with the original models :)

I agree about the bone being a little light, but I don't think you need much to make it perfect, just a little bit of darker shading for recesses etc.

Curious about what you're going to do for an army commander... stepping outside the normal LoTD path would be nice to see ;)

Greetings all. Thanks for the kind words, and the tips on the bone. Still trying out different suggestions. I don't think the backpacks on this last batch turned out too good (though I guess they are a little better than the previous 4), so I'll probably make all these guys save for the flamer, the devastator squad fodder, and hopefully improve with the next batch.

@ Widowmaker. It's actually a plasticard (plastruct) moon field. I flipped it over and the bottom was actually more detailed than the surface so I chopped that up. Stuck a wad of green stuff on a 28mm (I think that's the size) circle base and stuck the plasticard on top and pressed down until it was snug. After it hardened I trimmed the edges and filled any stray gaps.

Anyways onto the pics:

Pester Jevris about it, he'll tell you, eventually.

I love the old LotD models, but there is no way I can get hold of them really, and Im working on a company of Sallies.

Now: Those models and awesome, as are the bases. Do you paint them on the bases?

  • 11 months later...

Forgot I had a log here. Finally got back to painting after the dust settled in real life. Here's the first two of a new batch.

They loook fantastic!!!

Saw this on Warseer - nice to see you back! The models look fantastic, hopefully they're be a force to be reckoned with soon (3+ Inv all round... cripes. )

just a shame he'll have to run them as partly vanilla LOD and partly real LOD as from the looks of it the legion of the damned in the space marine book are only tactical squads, unless of course LOD get a full chapter approved

I always loved/hated the old LotD models. They look so cool, but I hate have old models on the table. If I did a unit, or an army of them, I would take the time to convert them with GS and plasticard, but that is because I'm nuts!

Looks ace, mate.

Thank you for the warm welcome back guys. Polished off 4 more that were WIP for a while:

Need to fiddle around with my camera some more. The whites are coming out lighter than they should be. Ah well.

Yeah... if I ever learn how to play (only played like 2 games during 2nd Ed), I'll probably field them as either vanilla or chaos marines.

Need to start from scratch with the next batch of marines, but I'll try to make a weekly post to keep the momentum up. Cheers.
