Sisters of Battle costume construction

Greetings, Merciful Brothers.

My friends and I (our local 40K community) wanted to promote 40K to the masses, kinda like spreading the word of the Emperor. One suggestion was given to us was to ask a member of a local cosplay club here in our hometown to wear a Sister of Battle costume and upload it on their website. She agreed to model for us, but only if we could come up with a costume.

Now, I know this is quite a stretch but is there any chance that anyone here in B&C have done anything like this? Could anyone give any website that has tutorials or how to's?

Cheers, and may the Emperor permit costume plays...

I was thinking more of a How-To. I've seen those vids already. But not a single one that has a Sister of Battle...

Can anyone point to a How-To?

Emperor bless you all...

I thought you were actually going to ask me about my opinion about the sisters' uniforms, which is: "yes they are too tight, and in fact might be distracting, better to take them off and fight naked sister" ;)

As for the suit...hmm, i'd say, paper mache...or You could use a corset as the base for the torso, then apply plates(probably cardboard or plasticard) to make the armour plates. The shoulderpads could be connected to the corset. everything else is essentially leather and cloth( or at least, they look that way)

To start out, good luck! I pondered making such a costume at one point, but it is rather difficult and I settled on a much simpler costume- an inquisitor. I posted a thread about that costume back in June, if you're interested. This is a very ambitious project you're looking at. A sister from a non-militant ordo would be much easier. Here's a link to someone who made a non-militant sister http://fairy-godmother.deviantart.com/. But, since you asked about the Sisters of Battle, I will provide what information and ideas I have. ;) This is mostly theoretical. I haven't done a lot of this stuff. You will probably want to look around and ask for help on http://forums.cosplay.com/.

For the shoulder pads, I would recommend some kind of foam that you can carve with a hot wire. Details and raised edges can be added later with paper-mache. It should be sealed before being painted. They won't be too happy being hit, but they'll look good enough. You can also make them entirely out of paper mache on a base of chicken wire. It looks less real, but it is easier to make and get a hold of.

The bodice should be based on a corset design, and you will either need to modify a corset, which can be pretty pricey, or you can make a corset. Technically, it doesn't have to be a corset, just a tight bodice with boning, but a corset covered with fake armored plates will look much better. Here's a good step-by-step website on how to make a corset: http://costuming.org/waisteddotcom/waisteddotcom.htm This will require a lot of fitting and you will not be able to make it without whoever is to be wearing the costume standing there as you measure, tape, and construct a pattern. This option cheaper than a real corset, but more frustrating. It also requires a certain amount of skill with a sewing machine.

For the rest of the armor (Arms, legs, boob-cups), there are a number of options. You can make it out of cardboard, which is cheap and readily available, but requires a lot of work to make it look good and last for any length of time. You can make it out of paper-mache, which is good for making raised edges and shaping it to the model's legs and arms, but it tends to look kind of fake. There's also a wonderful material known as Wonderflex http://www.cosplaysupplies.com/wonderflex/WonderflexFAQ.html. It is a thermoplastic, and it becomes moldable when heated. It becomes flexible at a low enough temperature that you can work it without gloves, and you can rework as many times as you want. Follow the link for more info. No matter what you end up doing, you're going to have to build the lower leg armor around a pair of boots.

The sleeves and tabard are easy enough as long as you have access to a sewing machine and a fabric store. Purity seals can be printed, dipped in tea, and attacked with lighters, knives, forks, etc to give them that worn look. The weapon is almost exactly like the Real Life Space Marine, so that's easy enough.

If you have any questions, ask me. I can probably find the answer in the giant list of sites I bookmarked as I looked for ways to make my inquisitor costume, which is coming along rather nicely, though it's not nearly as ambitious as a Sister of Battle.

Thanks everyone. BTW Seraphim, I saw that Inquisitor Sister costume during one of my google search routines some days ago. Not a Militant Sister, but it inspired us a bit on how to proceed with this project.

Our greatest challenge would be to make the armour plates and pads (i.e. shoulder and knee pads, thigh plates, chest plates) to look near-realistically solid while being comfortable at the same time.

Wonderflex was the first material we thought of using, alas we don't live in the US so that one is probably out. The best malleble sturdy material we have left would be modelling board (which is a more paper-ish version of plastic sheets, I think). Do you think you have some info on whether using plastic sheets is feasible?

I'll drop by the at forum.cosplay.com and try to get some more how to's from there, but for now I think I have some info on what to start on.

A sister of battle? as compared to a daemonette? oh right, it's for the masses not the perverts, maybe a storm trooper costume (without the helmet) as a base? do they even make those anymore?

anyway, good luck, now I'm going to go make myself some terminator armour and bash my way through the crowded malls!

btw, I think a space marine would fare better, except with law enforcement.

Buy a set of BMX shin guards of apropriate size.

http://www.xsportsprotective.com/tsg-shin-guard-bmx.html

Chest Guard, sew on the various bits and its done.

http://www.amazon.com/Econo-Guard-Womens-C...r/dp/B000RYKOIW

These shin guards for the front might work for a baseline, the BMX shinguards are for comfort to keep them on there, here's a template to sew onto the BMX guards (model it like plastic)

http://www.halloweenexpress.com/roman-leg-...a7dbc8b9ecfb302

Some chest plates to fool around with.

Various plates to strap on and re-model.

http://www.costumeshopper.com/costume-armor.html

The rest is up to you, this is all I could find in 10 minutes of searching. You wont have to worry about a Helmet, and guns/swords are usually not allowed but a plastic scimitar should be enough if you prefer a weapon.

NP, I thought about dressing a friend up as a SoB, she refused even when I have most of the materials already. (I BMX)

Just be sure to show pics on here of your finished result (with her permission of course).

  • 1 year later...

Hello again!

It's been awhile since I first started this thread. After almost two years, I'm happy to say that the costume is finally completed, thanks to a friend of mine who did the whole thing. It was no small feat, but he pulled it off. The result speaks for it self.

The discussion and progress of the costume - from conception to realization - can be viewed here: http://forum.clickstartplay.com/index.php?topic=3349.0.

If you guys wanna see the costume, head straight to the armoursmith's blog here: http://saberfreak.blogspot.com/2009/12/bat...r-realized.html

The girl that don the SoB armour is a friend of ours. Her blog is here: http://thevicariousangel.blogspot.com/2009...9-its-wrap.html

Click here for a quick preview of the SoB costume. I'd post the image here, but it's too big. I don't know how to thumbnail it. Been away for too long.

Comments are welcomed.

We had quite a number of problems making the shoulders, mainly because our model's shoulders aren't that broad. It made her look like she got stuck on a pair of helicopter blades.

Still, this was our first armour ever built entirely from scratch. It's not easy to mold a PVC pipe into and armour, you know. Hehe. It's most likely that we'll make a better version, now that we know how to do it.

BTW, thanks for the comments, guys!

That costume is Badass! :D I love it!

Mind if I steal some of your construction ideas when I fix up my costume? Much to my dismay, the first time I tried to wear mine, I discovered that hot glue does not stick to pleather very well, and it kinda fell apart on me. :(
