The test marine for my DIY 'Sword Bearers' force is finished, except for the base, which i'll decide on later (its going to be urban, I just need to decide on how to do it).

Wow, this is impressive Midian. I have always liked your painting style and this isn't an exception. The color scheme flows well, and I like the chapter symbol. Any background or such on these guys?

Can't wait to see some more of these...

That marine is so fresh and so clean. The shoulder pad makes for a great focal point. Definitely a painting style I'd like to work at imitating. Also, the pose is worth using. Tactical legs and assault legs cut, combined, and repositioned a little?

Hey Great test figure! I want to know how you did the legs and where you got the shoulder pad. My only suggestion is that the left and right of the sword on the shoulder pad look abit plane are you going to add any company numbers or symbols?

Cheers Darth. There's no fluff for these guys yet, I think I might come up with something small and go from there.

Spot on.

im prey sure that the pad is from the dark angel upgrades frame

i also realy like the legs yer nice positioning work there

cheers chris

Correct. I don't fancy painting freehand swords on everything so out came the DA sprues.

The one thing im not sure about is company/squad designation. As it stands you can tell its a tactical marine but notwhich squad or company he belongs to. If anyone has any ideas feel free to shout them out.

Thanks to everyone thats commented so far, im hoping to have a combat squad of these guys done in the next few days. I'll stick them up when there done.

That's a sweet, sweet model. Everything from modeling to painting to using that shoulderpad... :)

As for company/squad markings: Page 68 in the SM codex shows which shoulder pad rim colors correspond with which (Ultramarines) company. In addition, you could put his actual squad number on one of his knee pads.

I'd say follow the colors of the C:SM for company colors, but use one of the knee pads to do it, and put a number on the same pad to designate the squad. I think changing the shoulder pad color would mess up the overall effect of the paint job.

I would suggest using simple numbering within the tactical symbol for squad number, possibly Roman Numerals, and then the same on one of the Knee Pads to designate company. It will keep the palette limited, which I think with this particular scheme can only be a good thing.

I do wonder if you'll be using any other of the Dark Angels bits, particularly those with the swords for this chapter. I can kinda see the sergeants in white robes for some reason, and I like it.

The fluff maniac in me cries out for background! These guys look gorgeous, and it'd be cool to see some background for them. The name's certainly very evocative.

One option for company is to use something like this:

As for squad number, you could simply do a small Roman numeral on his right shoulder pad.

There's a few nice bits on the frame that'll get used, but I really dont want to paint white robes. It looks good (cheers for the mock up), but Its not a route I want to take with these guys. That being said, a vet squad might look good in robes but there a long way off yet.

Spot on. Third company it is then. The roman numeral in the tactical badge is a good idea.

Still no fluff ideas im afraid. The only thing I did have in mind was some sort of sword involved pre-battle rite. I've never been good with coming up with background.

If you've got any ideas Commissar let me know.

As for painting pogress, im about half way through another 4 marines. I'll add some photos to a wip thread later today.

Mhmmm, it needn't be blue and white, obviously, but it'd work well on a kneepad, so that could be cool. You could even have a black stripe if you wanted to keep your palette limited and muted.

With regards to the Roman Numeral, I meant something like this (using the ooooooooold colour-painter from the GW site.)

With regards to the fluff, I'll give it some thought and perhaps PM you? Or the other way round? :)

For some reason I was thinking green for the knee pad, probably worked up from DA green, but black could also work, i'll work up some mock ups tomorrow and see what everyone thinks.

As for the squad numbering thats a much better idea than putting it in the tactical badge. Little bit of freehand never hurt anyone right? :)

As for the fluff, im at a complete blank. I wouldn't know where to start so any ideas would be greatfully recieved.

Well, green works because you've used it as a secondary colour for the purity seals and your helmet's eyes. Although with red/green combinations you've always got the everpresent danger of Christmas Marines...

I'll write up some notes over dinner and PM you. This might give you some food for thought, though. :)

It took long enough but i've managed to get a combat squad painted. Thanks go to Commissar Molotov for the company/squad marking ideas. And helping with fluff. Can't forget the fluff.

The first pic isn't fantastic but it was the best of a bad bunch.

I'll be opening a new WIP thread tomorrow with some of the other Sword Bearers im working on, which at the time of writing this, are a plasma gunner, missle launcher and a sgt waiting for an undercoat, plus 2 more bolters to assemble for the full tactical squad.

All comments welcome as always.

EDIT - contrary to what I said in the first post of the thread, the bases aren't urban. I tried it and it looked terrible. After looking at some very nice red marines in various sub forums I decided that a brown base would look better.
