Tome of Creation - ChaosPhoenix' WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

this my first very one Work in Progress - Thread, I hope I'm doing everything right. Since I'm not good at painting, I start with introducing myself, hoping you won't bolter me to pieces.

I've started playing Warhammer last year, after being in hospital for some days and spent to much time thinking about the meaning of life. Which is for me at least some part being creative, doing something useless, having fun with friends and blowing things to bits.

I knew Warhammer for years but never started because I was lacking time, money and at most: skill. But a near-death experience taught me two things: skill isn't everything, luck helps and do something before your luck runs out. So I changed a few things and startet playing Warhammer. I've started 40k with Dark Angels and they are still my favourite army, although I never finished painting them. I just love Dark Angels and Space Marines in generell, but somehow they get the smallest painting-attention.

I didn't help that I got a lot, a real lot to do at the university. I head a longer break, so I feel like I'm just starting to play Warhammer, which is actually true since I've only got a few months playing experience and near zero painting experience. I only want to paint tabletop quality miniatures, but somehow still nice tabletop quality. Ugly colors & miniatures could be part of psychological warfare, but thats not intendet

*ahem*

Some much for the small talk.

I'm doing this thread to keep myself motivated and actually get some feedback. So for feedback I'll just show you last years Marine Squad, the first modells I've ever painted ;-)

The seargent looked better before I had the first time ever experience with 'ard Coat. What followed after were a lot of battles, some Tau, Dark Elves, Chaos Daemons.

I didn't paint a lot, but I've painted some daemons, although they should be for targeting practice.

But I've got a problem (except I'm writing too much). I've started using GW's new washes and I like them. I like the color of sepia washed skull white more than standard Death Wing Bleached Bone. But it's a real pain to paint something with it and get a clean look (even a greater pain than painting a black base coated Landraider with Bleached Bone). I was using several layers of watered down sepia wash to make it look cleaner. It worked somehow, but not that good. I've tried a little thicker mix and I got a pretty dirty looking yellowed bone armor.

The problem is.. I really like it.. not.. and yes.. somehow I like it. It looks a little like I've dropped my miniature in my coffee overnight and never got it clean again. It looks like some kind of failed speed painting experiment, but somehow I like it. Here is a picture of the basecoated version without details. It looks awful and good at the same time for me, I just can't decide. The next problem is, I don't like bleached bone anymore

dry brush over it with white/ very light bone. It will tidy it up

Thanks a lot, you were right. I've experimented a bit and got some great results. I've used pure bleached bone in the end. But I'll use white / bbone on the next batch of miniatures. I've used too much sepia on this one, so it was too dark.

I can't think of a color for the badge of the belt. Except for the quality of my painting. I'm starting to get crazy. I've spent 5 hours of painting and testing. For me, painting Marines is easier :P I'm spending so much time on testing, I'm not progressing muich with painting itself ;-). Last week about 10 hours passed until I've had the right Tau painting scheme.. Bah filthy xenos anyway...

Edit:

I'll add some pictures of my dreadnought, which will be bleached and colored with the new washes. The Khorne Berserker is attached with a magnet.

Thanks a lot. Yes it seems I missed the right side of the dreadnought ;-) I've got another picture from the beginning. I think I won't bleach him. I'll just paint it deneb stone -> white -> sepia -> drybrush light bboe -> maybe sepia again.

Your stuff looks great! I can honestly say though that after painting 2k points of DA with Deathwing and Ravenwing your hate for bonewhite is merely in it's fledgling stages. And now I have to paint belial, his standard bearer, aaaaand another squad of terms :D

aaaaaaaand another raider ^_^

  • 6 months later...

History repeats itself again. As I said, something is always happening to keep me from painting (or even playing). I've had a lot of work to do, including my first public speech at a museum. I don't know for you, but at my place history interested older people are the meanest predators alive.

When I had more freetime, I spent it with some kind of army-mid-life-crisis. I didn't know what to do with my Dark Angels or with Warhammer in general. It's not some kind of codex envy, but I felt a little sad about the things GW did (I know there are other armies which have it worse). I would support some kind of online codicies like it happened with Blood Angels, Demon Hunters and Witch Hunters in germany. Many GW employees stated that GW is not making any profit with their codicies, because their production costs are very high. They could still sell paper codicies for those who would want them and serve faster updates online. Ok thats not a WIP topic.

So what about my marines? I've no problems with loosing, but the army lists in our local store are very hard and not that friendly (even if the players are). A Tactical Marine based Dark Angels list would be torn to pieces by Orks, Chaos, Codex Marines or Tyranids in no time. But I just love my Dark Angels. I thought about making Crimson Fists or Blood Ravens, but nothing made me really happy. I really like the Fists or Blood Ravens but in my oppinion there is nothing better than Dark Angels Green. Except for Bleached Bone :(.

So I took a look at my stock. The first thing I noticed was, I have a lot of unfinished boxes. Why did I buy so many new ones? Is someone doing the same? Say yes please...

I found about 2500 of unhealthy looking Chaos Space Marines. They had a lonely expression on their faces and I think one of them was asking if I was his grandfather. Then I found about the same pointvalue of dirty hookers and their customers. After taking a closer look I noticed I was looking at Daemonettes and Plaguebearers. Ok this is it, for the Bad Guys side.

The next boxes seemed to have a life on their own. After a warning shot of plasma, I was invited to join the greater good or be terminated. The Tau, about at least 5000 points of them, mostly consisting of suits, stealth suits and hammerheads had joined forces with the local vermin and were starting phase 3 of their expansion which they called “Out of the closet”.

The last and biggest pile of boxes had a warning on it. It read “Do not enter. Knowledge leads to doubt. Doubt leads to heresy.” I finally found my Dark Angels. The Dark Angels were consisting of a half Deathwing, about 2/3 of the 3rd Company and some Ravingwing. They had an inquisitorial support of 30 Grey Knights, 15 Grey Knight Terminators, 20 Cadian Shock Troops with 2 Baneblades.

The bad thing is, most, no - nearly all models are unpainted. So how to proceed now? I like all armies, but I like to play marines the most. How to play them? I decided to play Death- & Ravenwing like it’s meant to be. But a Tactical Marines dominant force will be played with the rules of the standard Marines Codex. But I like a little story or fluff. So I want my army to be a mixed battleforce. Dark Angels supported inquisitorial forces to find a Fallen Angel. A real story and background will follow later. In Apocalypse I’ll play everything as it is. Grey Knights as Grey Knights, Dark Angels as Dark Angels. But if my opponent allows (and I will understand if he doesn’t) I’ll play a Grey Knight squad as Marine squad just to bring some flavor in. I know this might be confusing, but I think it although fun to play against (or with) a little background.

So how to proceed with more unpainted models than residents in our local village? BUY EVEN MORE!!!11elven. The Euro <-> British Pound exchange is nearly criminal. I’m paying less for a fully equipped Forgeworld Dreadnought than for a standard GW plastic Dreadnought. So I’ve bought a Dreadnought Chaplain, a Dark Angels Dreadnought and a Grey Knight Dreadnought. Additionally I ordered 2x DA Landraider Doors, 2x reinf. Landraider Armor and the Grey Knight Landraider Redeemer + Doors… and I’ve preordered a Hector Rex. After the shopping spree was ended, I made sure my girlfriend was still in love with me and everything was ok.

I armed myself with a spraygun and a lot of green paints. But again… how to paint them all? I’ve no Chinese slave worker (aka his girlfriend, which is actually Chinese and painting like a factory) like my best friend.

I decided I should paint them with a little.. story . I know I repeat myself. I made the plan to finish every Dark Angel with green or white spraygunning. Then I’ll paint small squads in a battle. 5 Marines, a tree or other scenery element and 7 plaguebearers. I think this will be fun and sllloowwllyy complete my armies. I’ll probably be finished around 2025, but if it was fun, it was worth it.

I hope this giant wall of text didn’t kill too many readers. What do you think? I promise the next posts will have less text and maybe more pictures

I know your pain ChaosPhoenix. I was once an impulsive army buyer as well. I owned Plague Marines, Grey Knights, Cadians, along with Wood Elves, Tomb Kings, and High Elves in WHFB, as well as my best and brightest, Black Templars. Most of those models were unpainted (barring a large portion of my original templars). Now i have sold off everyone except the templars and the high elves.

I found that having so many models to paint to be completely overwhelming, like you. So I would suggest getting rid of your excess armies.

Oh, and about the actual models, they are well painted. Nice and clean. Your dreadnought is excellent. Its not just standing there like its taking a nap.

I wish you luck in your quest to paint this army.

Yup I agree. I had 2500 points of Space Marines... I think. About 1500 points of Tau and some Grey Knights stuff. Most of it was unpainted, and what was painted didn't look too hot. I tried re-painting the army in my Desert Scorpions theme (see hall of honor section) but it was just too much. I was burnt out. I sold EVERYTHING.

I'm just now getting back into it, mostly because of all of the cool plastic kits and 5th edition. I've only purchased a Commander so far and I plan on painting him to completion before even ordering another kit.

Anyways... didn't wanna hijack! Continue, continue...

Thanks a lot for the replies. I've covered the floor with plastic foil and I'm spray gunning large parts of the army at once. But something weird is happening. At some points the miniatures are going wipe. Something is bleaching them. This is not the first time, I've spraygunned a part of my army, but some miniatures are actually going white O.o

Pictures will follow.

So some days passed and I started to do things. Not as much as I wanted, but it's moving. I've used the spray gun to mass paint Marines. I've used it before and my verdict on the spray gun is: Don't use it at all or use it for tanks. The spraygun is nice, if everything works. But there are a lot of things not working perfect. The pressure delivered by the propellant is everything except steady. The cans empty fast and you'll waste paint like crazy.

The real problem is, to achieve really got results, the amount of paint used has to match the always changing pressure. If it doesn't you'll waste either propellant or paint. While I love using a spray gun, there are too many not flawlessly working points, which lead to a reaaal waste of money.

Yes I know, using a spray gun is a waste of money itself, because it would be more efficient and cheaper to use a brush and your cold dead hands. While I was ok with wasting some money for faster results, I'm not ok with wasting a lot of money for a little faster results. I think it's ok for tanks.

Since I haven't got new finished models yet, I post some pictures. I'm although posting some army lists in the next days, so criticism is always welcome.

Yeah after weeks and weeks, I finally had time again.

Yes, I'm one of those traitors, who plays his Dark Angels using the vanilla codex. At least, if I want to field Marines. With all those unfriendly ork hordes out there, I just want a little more bang for the buck, sorry Azrael.

Here are my versions of Pedro Kantor, Vulkan He'Stan and Shrike - Dark Angels style. Sorry, but I'm no conversion master.

Oh my. Did you ever get to the point, where you want to give up? Well I just did a few hours ago. I thought the Titan was beating me. I can't paint very well and I'm also not a good sculpter. But usually, I can build stuff, no matter if it's infantry, buildings or tanks. I haven't hat problems with Forgeworld stuff too. Until now.

The Reaver Titan was nice and easy until I got to the lower legs. At first, the armor plates didn't want to fit. But thats what I love about resin, heat it up and it does what you want it too. Or does it? This time, it didn't. No matter how I adjusted it, it didn't want to fit. I didn't even knew why, it looked all perfectly well.

But finally, after a lot more time than I expected, all went well. When everything was glued, I noticed I shouldn't have fitted the armor yet. I was so caught up in fitting it, I was a step too early. But that knowledge came a little too late. When attaching the foot, I had to fit the toe pistons with two chopsticks (I've got a black belt in chopstick-eating) and a huge about of faith.

That was done too, yay. When I had one of those moments again. When build the leg, I thought about the y and z-axis but it looks like I forgot the x-axis. If I had left it like that, the Titan would have looked like a saluting soldier.

So I had to readjust the foot while 13 parts where just freshly glued. Naturally, some fell off and some were dried. I could have ripped the foot appart, but resin breaks a lot easier than plastic. I tried to insert the loose parts and fix them with superglue and greenstuff. It looks like it worked. On the other hand, I'm afraid the whole leg could collapse anytime soon.

But the leg is finished now, it dries and I hope it's stable. I guess there are days when you shouldn't build anything. But I didn't want to give up, so I've build a Grey Knight Landraider Redeemer for recreation. At least that went well. I think whats killing me it, that the Titan is sooo damn expensive and I'm afraid to screw up. So I screw up.

So here are some pics. The Titan Cat is there too, it sneaks up the Grey Knights...

I must admit, your Redeemer looks far better than mine! :)

I actually haven't built it yet, I'm using the Raider itself for my Ultramarines. How was it assembly wise?

Which assembly do you mean? The Forgeworld kit was really easy to use and it's basically a "pimp my tank kit" for the normal Land Raider. The problem with Land Raiders is for me the roof armor on the rear end of the Raider. You can see it on the third Redeemer picture. There is always a space, no matter how hard I press it together. But I've seen that on 'eavy Metal pictures too. I'll just greenstuff it over later.

@Everyone

Painting the Titan!

I've never talked about the color scheme. I need to paint the arm weapons before attaching them to the Titan, because otherwise I couldn't paint the inner sides of the gunbarrels. I want to use a different version of the normal Warp Runners paint scheme.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog/wrscalestore.jpg

But instead of blue, I'll paint Dark Angels green. What do you think? My painting skills aren't that good to be honest. I've bought the Titan about 10 years too early, I think. But I love the model and the construction of it.
