Corax- Primarch of the Raven Guard [Updated]

Ok so I recently decided to try my hand at a conversion of the Primarch Corax, based roughly on his description from the book Fulgrim, here he is:

Its mostly finished bar a little cleaning up of the GS work, which is only there to sort of hold certain parts together pending the finished pose, like the storm bolter will have the GS removed and just be glued onto the lightning claw when I'm happy with the pose and fit.

So questions, comments etc always welcome.

Yea the GS set badly on that, I've since removed it and redone it. Now it more resembles the beak of a hawk.

As for the wings they're from the description in Fulgrim on page 454:

Corax of the Raven Guard was tall and slender. His armour was also black, but it seemed to be utterly non-reflective, as though it swallowed any light that dared to fall upon it. The white trim of his shoulder guards was fashioned from pale ivory, and great wings of dark feathers swept upwards to either side of his pallid, aquiline feature.

Also on page 464:

Corax darted like a dark bird of prey, leaping through the air with his winged jump pack and killing with every stroke of his mighty talons.

Its the best description I've been able to find of Corax so thats what I went with.

so fluff wise, are his wings real or just a fancy jump pack (just wondering since as a BA player i thought sangy was the only winged primarch.)

Well Fulgrim says its a winged jump pack so I take that to mean a specially designed jump pack in the form of wings, sort of like Eldar Swooping Hawk wings. Sanguinius is the only Primarch with fleshy wings of his own but it looks like Corax thought it was a good idea.

Update time!

Ok so I didn't get time to update Friday but now that I'm back home I got some pics taken and here they are:

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0314.jpg

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0315.jpg

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0316.jpg

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0318.jpg

As you can see the beak and wings have been updated as well as the base in general and the last pic shows the two bases seperate. There are no magnets or anything. The fit is snug enough that even without them the model stays firmly in the base anyways.

I like it. Nice update to the helm too. I'm in the process of building Shrike's Wing, and something like that would be cool. Alas, my GS-fu is weak

Keep up the good work though, I look forward to seeing some paint on this dude.

Cheers,

WW

Thanks, yea hopefully it doesn't look like a Gonzo snout anymore.

On that note I notice nobody's commented on the lightning claws, I would have thought someone might have noted the difference, the right claw is from the new Veterans, while the left claw is from the Commander plastic set shaved down to resemble the style of the right claw and the Storm Bolter covers the back of he gauntlet nicely but I was wondering if anyone thought the different lengths of the claws clashed? My bro said it looked like the left claw was simply partially retracted and therefore wasn't a problem but I was wondering what others thought?

Nice GS work on the wings and I like what you've done with the talons on the feet, though I'm really not sold on the beak though, I feel it takes away from the overall look of the model somewhat, and to be anal I think its less reminiscent of a Ravens beak (medium, straight) or a hawk (very short, curved) but more of a pelican or flamingo type beak

However, maybe I am just against beaks!

Lets see it paitned

Probably the angle of the pics, its nowhere near as big as a Pelican and was made to resemble a hawk beak, short sharply curved and pointed but maybe the pics don't do it justice.

glad they turned out lookin that good ;)

Yea thanks again, they were a pain to reposition and fit but the end result was worth it. :)

;) its not bad as a figure i personally find him his claws too large and his armour not ornate enough but bar that hes not a bad attempt

The claws are normal power armored claws, they're actually smaller in proportion to the model than the models they were made for. As for the armor well Corax wasn't eve rdescribed as being very ornate in his arms and armor. Corax is always described as modest and unassuming compared to his brothers and the main descriptions from the book Fulgrim I quoted above and again are:

As for the wings they're from the description in Fulgrim on page 454:

Corax of the Raven Guard was tall and slender. His armour was also black, but it seemed to be utterly non-reflective, as though it swallowed any light that dared to fall upon it. The description is short but no shorter than that of many of Horus, Dorn and Fulgrim's descriptions in other books of the series yet they are always noted for their shining and intricate armor, Corax is only noted for the matt finish of his armor, his claws and his wings.

It looks like a really good conversion true to fluff, but I can't help but think of the 2 weirdo guys from Zeist in the second highlander movie who were flying around attacking Connor in beginning of the movie. I know that does'nt help, but it is what comes to mind.....

Alright well the second claw was irking me so I resized it with green stuff and the result turned out better than I was expecting. The right claw is the new metal one from the Veterans MK 2 and is longer and sleeker than the plastic claw used on the left. I shaved the left claw down to resemble the right one but the size was still off so I increased the size and shape of the claws and sculpted some skulls onto the left claw. The skulls could use some improvement but are acceptable for the moment. I also reconstructed the Storm Bolter and made it more remeniscent of Logan Grimnar's bolter with the ammunition coming down the side of the guantlet on the left and the back of the bolter seriously shaved down to make it more compact.

Lastly I took off the small claws on the boots and added some GS to extend the boots and give them a point more like the boots of the Emperor's Champion model. They still have a slight look of claws but aren't so obtrusive now and are sleeker.

I think I'm almost done fiddling with this guy and I'll get some more pics up Friday hopefully, and then maybe prime him and start painting.
