[LPC] Imperial Fists

Age quod agis

Recommended Posts

Here's WIP shot #1 of my Imperial Fists for the Librarium Painting Challenge.

I figure I'm about 1/3 done with this squad. All of the parts are base coated, most are inked, and all that's left is lining and details. The captain model is waiting on some bits I ordered to arrive - mainly the right handed power fist.

Nice - I have a question about the gryphonne sepia wash - did you have to repaint the yellow after applying it or did you use a very watered down wash? Cos I'm trying to do some Lamenters and a couple of people have suggested using the wash, but I dont want my marines going brown on me.

Actually, the only gryphonne sepia in any of them are the purity seals on the sergeant.

The method consisted of:

White primer

pale yellow basecoat (sprayed with GW spraygun using Badger airbrush paints - 30:10:2 white / translucent orange / brown)

yellow ink over the entire model

lined w/ chestnut ink (sepia or devlan mud lining would work also - but it's not over the entire model, just brushed w/ a detail brush into cracks / crevices)

boltgun metal joints, then badab black wash over the boltgun metal

blood red chest eagles w/ chestnut ink wash (not thinned, straight out of the bottle), I did not have to go back and highlight them

white parchment w/ blood red wax

devlan mud over the entire purity seal, then pick out the wax edges w/ blood red

various details as you want (eyes, weapons, etc)

base is khemri brown over sand, badab black wash, highlight w/ a medium brown, then highlight again w/ bleached bone

testors dullcoat (or whatever it's called) spray to protect the paint

Today's update:

I've done most of the work on the bodies of the second combat squad. I've also inked the hands on the weapons, so once the guns are painted, I can attach them. I also did a bit of lining on the backpacks, but they still need a bit of work.

Yellow is a very hard color to paint, or so I've heard. So this is good looking. I think the yellow though lacks a certain depth, it seems to all just mold together. Do you have highlights on there? Also is there a way you could cut down on the shiny?

good luck, doing well!

Most of them have a bit of highlight on them (I forgot to do a couple before I hit them with the yellow ink!) However, the highlights get washed out with the camera (poor lighting, relatively cheap digital camera). The "shiny-ness" will be resolved once the chapter symbols are applied - I'll be hitting them with Testors Dullcoat. I've already done it on the sergeant, and it blends the colors a bit better (not as harsh a transition between the shading and regular color) as well as removing the sheen of the plethora of inks / washes.

Updates for today.

Squad 1 is complete other than a wash on the bases of 5 guys.

We also have a shot of the start of squad 2.

Hmm.... what could this be? A WIP of Darnath?

Yes, this was the most involved conversion I've done in 18 years of involvement with this hobby...

Latest update. The LPC vow is complete - the transfers aren't going to happen, so this squad is fielded "as is" (darn round transfers on marine shoulder pads!) Once I have more painted, I'll get better images. These are on a cheap digital camera - the SLR is being saved for better lighting / more stuff to photograph.
