Rogal Dorn, And his honour guard.

Hey all, Been quiet for a few months as I've been busy working on a few things and then xmas and all.

However I come with the start of a constantly updating WIP thread of my attempt at Rogal Dorn.

Rogal Dorn is my favorite Primarch, just as his Imperial Fists are my favourite chapter. Having started a IF army for the GT in october. I now want to add Rogal Dorn, Sigismund, the Legion banner, and 5 honour guard to the army.

Big Project, I know, but if I can pull it off, then I will be immensly happy.

Here are the first WIP shots of the start of this project. The basis for his legs and body are terminator parts, but i have used the bac of a power armourd body for his back.

The first image shows how his legs will be posed roughtly (they are not glued at this point) The recesses in the terminator armour have been GS'd in. to make it like large power armour.

The second image hows the legs with the chestplate resting on top to give a better idea of the pose and posture he will be in.

The Third shows the scale in comparison to a "normal" marine. All the HH books say marines come up to a Primarchs chest. so far, i've kept to the right scale. the marine is lifted up as dorn is on a 40mm base and has sceneic raising his height too so i adjusted the marine accordingly.

Looking at it, it's pretty boring right now, but it wont be in a few weeks when all the honour guard parts arrive.

Unfortunatly he's not getting abig hammer, as the only reference to a hammer is Lysanders "Hammer of Dorn" which imo is probably just a thunder hammer that was so well made the maker called it after his Primarch.

All the pics and reference material i've seen/read have him with a sword (High Marshal Helbrecht's sword is forged from the peices of Dorn's sword which he broke over his knee swearing to never wield it again as he'd failed the Emperor)

So im going to recreate that. It'll look like a broard sword, but the hilt will be a Templar Cross wih a jewel in the middle.

My main areas of concern are: His Backpack. Im stumped as to how to do this to scale. and: His gun. What would it look like? how would i make it?

Here's Update 1:

Have added his feet, and bulked out his leg armour. I cant bulk it too much as it has to have a lot of filligree added with with add about half a mm to the overall thickness. As can be seen i've alo created new arches at the front of his greaves over his feet.

I removed the belt buckle and pouches. I wasne happy with the buckle. and the pouches whilst being a tad too small, were also in the way of the next stage: the joints in his armour.

Here are the WIP's

The greenstuff is a lot smoother than it looks there. though if any one has any ideas about how to smooth hard to reach areas (like the sides of his feet) then I would really like to know.

I also have my concept for Sigismund and the honour guard sorted too.

Im going to use templar/command squad bits and use the "knight" style helmets from those, and the templar tabard torso's (For those who dont know the 1st company were called the templars during the heresy) will use grey knight halbards and the black templar terminator shields from forge world. will also use the little shield things you get from the terminators for personal heraldry. The Guys will have personalised templar crosses instead of the "terminator honours" badge as terminator honours werent invented then.

Im debating putting centurion style brushes on their helmets to tie them in with the spartan-esque theme GW have made for the Fists. though this might be too much as they will already have a lot of differences from the standard IF brothers around them.

Also Colours scheme: Sigismund will look like a black templar. Because those colours were his personal heraldry. But, What of the others? Will giving them the templar crosses be enough to denote they're 1st company? or should i paint them black too, giving them nice contrast to the incredibly shiny primarch they're guarding?

What do you guys think. Please C&C my ideas and sculpting as i really want to do this properly.

Thanks- Zaah

  • 1 month later...

Hey all, It's been a busy month, but i have managed a large amount of work on the big guy, so here he is (in much better quality, not perfect but im getting the hang of it)

Please dont hesitate to ask questions or give feedback positive or negative, It all makes me a better modeller.

Picture of his torso, ass can be seen I found the wonders of brown stuff, more about that in a bit.

His torso with his head attached

His sword arm and the sword he'll have are also taking shape.

A shot of his shoulderpads

http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo242/BrotherZaah/PauldronsWIP.jpg

I'm thinking of modifying a Forge World Fist terminator pad instead of the pad on the right. As is will save me trying to green stuff the fists symbol, and it will be done in a detail that i couldnt hope to achieve on my first major scratch build.

Does any one have any ideas for a back pack?? I could try to make one out of putty but it will take me a very long time.

Also, as I mentioned I found brown stuff, this is an amazing putty, how I contemplated doing anything with straight edges without it before is a mystery to me. I highly recommend it. Will try to post a separate article on the putties as i also picked up procreate though havnt used it yet.

As always any feedback would be hugely appreciated.

hmmmm dorn is really a bit {}{ if u know what I mean ????????

I have no idea what you mean. I dont speak in weird.

Haha, excellent comment. I'm quite liking Dorn so far, however his head looks so small. It kind of gives me the idea that Dorn himself is normal Marine size, but his armour is massive huge. So you'd need a slightly bigger head, and I've got nothing to offer you in the way of constructive comments for that side of it. Unless you want to sculpt your own head entirely...

or you could find a suitable head from a slightly larger scale model range (I wish I could recommend one but I don't know them all that well)

Looks like things are coming together really well. The pose looks really good and the true-scaling is awesome.

No ideas for a backpack though. It's difficult because of the very limited style of marine backpacks. There's not a lot of variation out there.

If you wanted to be different maybe start with some sentinel or similar powerpacks and build up around them?

Can't wait to see the finished model!

Thats actually a pretty good idea, might go kit bash one of the Tamiya models i've got. Sculpting is a last resort, because I suck at it in that capacity and im bound to create a monster.

Kinda Rogal Dorn/Nurgle/Car Crash hybrid face.

Found this at one-ring and will be trying it in a few minutes: http://www.one-ring.co.uk/phpBB2/kb.php?mo...rticle&k=91

as tempting is to make Sean Bean Rogal Dorn, I'll change the hair style.

The sculpting is coming along really nicely, however the thigh of the right leg looks to be a little to low in spite of the position of the greave, also the sword looks a little to small, looks like it should be a little bit bigger. Maybe post some pics with the sword arm tacked to the model to get a size comparison.

I really like the pose and the base, however you need to have some sort of plan. I suggest you tell us what sort of decorations you want to use. That way we can provide some advice in those regards. It will also helps us out in understanding your daunting vision.

Messanger

N.B. a tip with taking photos is to have them on the table and then photographing them. Especially with another marine next to them to provide comparions (especially since you are doing a larger model).
