Finished Imperial Fists

Ironjens

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd compress my Warseer plog for my fellow marine viewers.

I got back into the 40k hobby after a long hiatus by purchasing a 1800 point ultra marine army from swedish e-bay. The pics were blurry so I hadn't really anticipated how badly painted they were. But it didn't really matter as I was going to paint them up as my homebrew chapter, the Theta-legion (I know, I know, no more legions - yada yada). They had a really bad paint scheme and I only really painted up one squad:

Horrid. After re-thinking I opted for the colorful Imperial Fists. Then someone told me "yellow is impossible to paint" but I wouldn't let that be a deterrent. I just had this to paint:

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/imperial006.jpg

You can see I had started on some terminators and their ride...

So I got to work aiming for table-top quality. As I am crap at highlighting I skipped that part and instead jumped on the drybrushing train. First out were the terminators:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2095/2291758629_d8cff338d0_b.jpg

Yes, that's a giant home made assault cannon, to match the one on the crusader...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3072/2320443537_2a72ffb117_b.jpg

The Crusader, actually it's made out of thick paper, but it fools anybody first time they see it. People are strangely blind when something looks almost as it should on the tabletop. Note the gigantic assault cannons.

Then I salvaged a dreadnought from a second hand bitzbox. Someone had apparently tried to remake it into a Nurgle dread with the help of a lot of green stuff. I freed it and re-made it into a very battered siege dread from Imperial Armour Apocalypse. The big flamer comes in handy versus orks...

By now it should be obvious that I'm more of a builder than a painter so painting the army would take a lot longer than projected.

Then I turned to the troops. A tactical squad with a rhino, complete with pig latin motto:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2305/2353575350_1ecff01f2c_b.jpg

Having registered to play in a 1750 point tournament I got the motivation to paint up at least that amount, so this is what I brought (it was a tournament with comp scores so it had to be fairly balanced):

Captain with jump pack:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2281/2431474707_4d04e1e61a_b.jpg

First tactical squad:

Their rhino:

Second tactical squad:

Their rhino:

Scouts with powerfist veteran sergeant:

Assault marines:

First predator:

Second Predator:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2177/2432289190_2b3bf0c52e_b.jpg

Venerable Dreadnought, converted from a chaos dread - it was a true pain to file off the chaos stuff I can tell you...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/2432289442_18dc6be80e_b.jpg

After that I had a while when I didn't tough the men in yellow, but then I made a vindicator by adding magnets and a big gun to one of the earlier rhinos:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3159/2460715484_3900277417_o.jpg

I had made a great buy when finding a "bitzbox" on the net. It contain a lot of stuff but also a complete forge world vindicator (nowadays a chaos defiler, don't ask...) and a land speeder tempest:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3156/2460715660_9d37f7460a_o.jpg

Then I painted my old vindicator:

(Post continued due to what was a case of piclimit...)

In an epiphany I realized Imperial Fist veterans have cool helmets:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3114/2837077418_e626c57d90_b.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3191/2836244387_7102fa18fc_b.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3165/2836245223_013107ea1f.jpg?v=0

Then I realized it's only veteran sergeants. But I'm too lazy to correct the mistake...

After that I built my own Chaplain dread with the help of a skull in a box bit from one of the bitzboxes (I've changed the weapons into a twinlinked autocannon and a close combat arm since then):

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3072/2868230845_e56872c3cc_o.jpg

To complement him I made two more chaplains:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3049/2891834427_ae2ab5706f.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3243/2892673240_f708ed70ab_b.jpg

Then I took a group photo:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3078/2891945893_474292751e_b.jpg

Added assault terminators with scratchbuilt claws:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3028/2935377192_c0c7929228_o.jpg

And a Land Raider Prometheus for them to ride around in (a fairly basic conversion):

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3145/2955366017_dbfc9e3e41_o.jpg

In anticipation of an Apocalypse battle at my game club I added magnets and a cannon to my second rhino so I could field the vindicator formation (they never got to shoot...)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3018/2961124169_53aa1174cc_o.jpg

The captain got rebased to a legal base size:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3292/2961124095_7a3a15c6c2_o.jpg

Painted an old school whirlwind:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3271/2961124445_da924794ec_o.jpg

Added some apocalypse allies:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3135/3024590487_ab1b4c628a_o.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3039/3025418418_12af322798_o.jpg

Thanks to 5th ed.s focus on troops I added a third tactical squad, this one in a fire support configuration:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3274/3046286513_d321359551_o.jpg

It's actually the old Theta legion squad, now called Creber Poena, which is latin for "thick paint"

Arms racing for the game club's christmas apocalypse battle (we ended up fielding 26.000 points a side) I put together this:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3239/3116438996_611fc265af_o.jpg

Ten terminators with two cyclones!

Some added thick paper-and-card air support in the form of a WIP thunderbolt:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3234/3129054823_8482c0b867_o.jpg

A terminator librarian:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3090/3129881908_645e6bf4eb_o.jpg

The banner is supposed to be a brain shooting lightning but everybody thinks some kind of tyranid...

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/Nightmare%20before%20Christmas/nightmarebeforechristmas006.jpg?t=1230089266

30 Tactical marines, 10 assault marines, 10 scouts, 20 terminators, 1 librarian, 2 chaplains, 1 captain, 1 rhino, 1 land speeder, 3 vindicators, 2 land raiders, 2 predators, 3 dreadnoughts, 1 whirlwind, 3 assassins and a Thunderbolt. All for the princely sum of 5000 points.

(Pics of the Apocalypse battle here: http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ir...re%20Christmas/)

All told nothing has been stripped before being re-painted by a not so skilled painter (that's me). However it looks wonderfully coherent on the table and that's what matters.

Killer dude. If I only had one thing to say, I'd say toss in a little black on your troop marines, it'll help the yeller stand out and set some contrast. Other than that, given the scale, nice man.

*claps* i have to admit looking at all those old models brought back memories but you have turned out well so far. granted people may say the yellow is a little thick in places. it still looks nice in my opinion. better then some of the guys i have played against at my local store. i hope to see more in the future and wish you luck with your Imp fist collection :P though i must admit if your going for true imp fist style you need a Ironclad and a few dev teams but thats me *winks* be safe.

Oh, if I've got anything left to paint?

1 normal land raider

5 terminators with heavy flamer

12 bikers

3 multimelta attack bikes

1 biker captain

2 tactical squads

3 full devestator squads with a lot of missiles, heavy bolters and four plasma cannons...

2 old school whirlwinds

1 thick card land speeder typhoon (it lacks details but looks ok)

1 full 10 man squad sniper scouts with missile launcher

6 shotgun scouts

1 full 10 man bolter scout squad with heavy bolter

1 full 10 man assault squad with a thunderhammer/stormshield vet. sergeant

1 Rhino (thinking of converting it into a razorback)

1 command squad (converted with terminator honours shoulderpads and greenstuff loin cloths)

5 sternguard (converted with terminator honours shoulderpads and greenstuff loin cloths)

2 dreadnoughts

3 captains on foot

1 chaplain on foot

1 librarian on foot

I find it too easy to buy stuff from e-bay... And I recently required templates for drop pods so I'm building a couple of those since I've realized the fun of "Drop pod assault"

However I am thinking of applying army painter to them, the shaded varnish that picks out details so nicely, as it is like JEFF4i wrote, that a little more detail gives much more life to the models. Plus I usually pack them roughly in plastic bags so they would really benefit from the added protection...

The reason why the color looks gloopy on the models is most probably because I don't have the patience to strip them before I repaint them. If I had aimed at making a really nice looking army and just buying used models as a way to cheapen it a bit I would probably do that, however I've gone for bulk painting apocalypse army. Quick and dirty, you know ;)

It's an excellent collection Ironjens with some lovely old models and scratchbuilt stuff. Seems to me the only thing you lack is a techmarine to keep it all working ;). I particularly like the Chappy Dread conversion. Anyway keep up the great work.

Cheers

I, I've got a techmarine in the works too, but he's just a home made conversion, you know running on the cheap side...

I've actually followed the advice from many of you and tried a wash. Rather, I smothered a dread and a predator in army painter. And it was just like a friend said: "You know that the stuff that is most yellowy will look best afterwards?". The dread looks nice, bit the pred was a bit more orangey so it has the perfect nuance of fried chicken. Go figure.

But me being a lazy git I guess they'll all end up that way...

So the never ending work continues. True to form I haven't bothered to paint something I own, instead I built a paper and cereal packaging dread pod and bought and built a razorback. I mean, five points dearer than a rhino? It's a steal!

These were painted eye searing yellow from the start and then just got army painter all over them. Works a charm...

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/poddenLarge.jpg?t=1237242645

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/raserleftLarge.jpg?t=1237242754

The dread pod is roughly 2" taller than an ordinary pod. The forgeworld dreadpod is supposed to be bigger than a normal pod, but I don't know by how much. Anybody knows?

I like the Rhino and Droppod much better than the other stuff. The extensive use of drybrushing just drags them down a lot.

You could at least paint some of the details...

I like the Chaplain Dread a lot, it is probably my favourite of all your stuff.

*wiggles my nose* i don't know about eye shearingly yellow *looks towards and eyes melt* eh gage! thats no good @.@ *slaps on some bionic eyes* much better. anyway i am still happy to see how your doing here. and that you have kept with the paint scheme. *bows head* i hope to see more though thats still up to you. have you kept track of the total points you have finished as you go? or is just 5000 your rough average idea?

alot of those models arent that good, hate strait colours i recon its a waste of good models, others are fairly good, nice amy

Agreed, Nice army, but "finished" is pushing it.

A dip, or a wash, and some proper detailing would make that army 5000 points of kick ass.

lookin good, but i agree, could look alot better with a wash and some more contrasting details in the armour.

hehe, i love dimmu borgir, but i doubt that much imperial fists will have heard of them.

Well, they are called cheesy for a reason. Just kidding, but some advice? Use the Iyanden Darksun to give yourself an even yellow undercoat that you can use for your other colors. It will DEFINITELY help alleviate that marbled yellow color.

Your wisdom has indeed been heard fellow brothers; I've started dipping away to get an even finish on the army. Did some of the terminators yesterday and they look incredible compared to before. So yes, the title of the thread is a bit misleading, at least until I take some pictures of the finalized marines.

Oh, Solid Zaku, the marbled effect was what I was originally trying to achieve. But I'm too impatient to get it right all the time. Hence the change over to dip...

As to how many points of yellow goodness I possess I have 4460 points of painted Imperial Fists (when outfitting all the stuff as usual, i.e. no hellfire rounds on the HQs etc). Add to this the Thunderbolt and an Eversor Execution Force (I will never ever use the Vindicares again) made out of three of the evil dudes it comes to 5065 points.

However I have registered to play a tournament in a couple of weeks and decided to go with this list:

HQ

Lysander - 200p

Elites

Dreadnought: Twinlinked autocannon, Heavy flamer, extra armour - 140p

+Drop pod: Locator - 45p

Terminators

4+1 Terminator: 1 Cyclone missile launcher - 230p

Siege Dreadnought [iA:Apoc]: Infernocannon, assaultdrill w heavy flamer - 120p

Troops

Tactical squad

9+1 Marines: Meltagun, missile launcher, powerfist - 195p

+Rhino: Extra armour - 50p

Tactical squad

9+1 tacticals: Plasmagun, Plasmacannon, stormbolter - 195p

+Razorback: Heavy bolters - 40p

Marines

9+1 Marines: Meltagun, multimelta, powerweapon - 190p

+Droppod: Locator - 45p

Scouts

4+1 scouts Sniperrifles, missile launcher, camo cloaks - 100p

Fast Attack

Attackbikes

2 attackbikes: 2 multimeltas - 100p

Heavy Support

Thunderfire - 100p

Total: 1750p

Lysander goes in the tactical pod and drops in to say hi where he's needed.

I've tried it out once and it worked fairly well against a daemon army, Lysander is a beast all by himself. Also, the tournament is running comp so I think I have enough diversity to not get too low comp.

But now I have to paint two attackbikes, Lysander, five snipers, the techmarine and thunderfire cannon and build and paint one more drop pod in only two weeks. Wish me luck :tu:

I managed to paint the last stuff and slather Army Painter all over it in time for the tournament. I ended up 101 out of 109 players I belive, but I had a blast anyway and now I have at least 1750 points of Imperial Fists that definitely are finished as the title of the thread implies. Having seen what the Army Painter does in terms of shading, and how much better the models look I'm going to go over the rest of the horde with it. Tomorrow most probably.

Here are some final Fists:

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/lysanderLarge.jpg?t=1240178648

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/rhinoLarge.jpg?t=1240179297

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/squadIIILarge.jpg?t=1240179320

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/razorbackLarge.jpg?t=1240179379

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/sniperscoutsLarge.jpg?t=1240179424

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee89/Ironjens/thunderfireLarge.jpg?t=1240179697

After shading the entire army I'm thinking of painting some sternguard and perhaps building a third pod. Podding has really invigorated my marine love as I've finally found a way to play them that suits my play style. So maybe I should make an ironclad too?

1. Good job on painting an army that large

2. Thin your paints! Your yellow look glompy

3. Highlight. The red Chest Eagles would look so much better with a coat of highlight, as would your yellow.

4. Finish stuff, I see unpainted eagles, tabards, cables, badges, etc

5. Your later models look better than the earlier ones, makes sense I guess, but I would go back and touch up stuff.

6. Awesome card vehicles, seriously...that's very rad.

Good work in total, but the small things bug me.

not bad not bad. though i only found one problem with your army list for the tourny you wrote up *points* Lysander can't go in the Droppod. his in termie armor and from what i found out that some friends and the local GW store manager(also a friend) pointed out was that Termies can only go in Black templar drop pods not normal space marine ones :/

1. Good job on painting an army that large

Thanks, it took a year...

2. Thin your paints! Your yellow look glompy

That's because I wanted to finish before the next millennium. I'm a slow painter so one thick layer is to prefer before ten thin ones. Especially when painting yellow. As I'm always aiming for the fable "table-top" standard it works for me. The gloopyness is also thanks to the fact that I don't strip old models (and basically all of the models have another paint cheme underneath my yellow as they are e-bay finds...) as I also lack patience when I've finally got my painting stuff out of the cupboard.

So you should be saying "Thin your paints and by god, strip those models first!" ^_^

3. Highlight. The red Chest Eagles would look so much better with a coat of highlight, as would your yellow.

I know I should be highlighting, but I stick to Stalins adage "Quantity has a quality all of itself". I concentrate on churning out models for the horde and let others do the golden daemon award winners...

4. Finish stuff, I see unpainted eagles, tabards, cables, badges, etc

I don't see any unfinished stuff except a lens on one of the dreads. What I do see is the Imperial Fists predeliction to paint everything yellow. Tanks, armour, eagles, tabards, everything is painted yellow. They must be crazy...

5. Your later models look better than the earlier ones, makes sense I guess, but I would go back and touch up stuff.

Oh yes, I would too, it's just that I don't really like to paint, I'm more of a builder type of person. Good enough rather than Best possible, if you know?

6. Awesome card vehicles, seriously...that's very rad.

Yes, I'm really satisfied with them but the money/time equation means there is no meaning in making anything other than forgeworld stuff as paper vehicles take too much time to make to justify it when a droppod is as cheap as it is.

Good work in total, but the small things bug me.

Thanks man, it's always nice to here that someone likes it, even if it's just the old abhorred "table-top" army :P

not bad not bad. though i only found one problem with your army list for the tourny you wrote up *points* Lysander can't go in the Droppod. his in termie armor and from what i found out that some friends and the local GW store manager(also a friend) pointed out was that Termies can only go in Black templar drop pods not normal space marine ones :/

Interesting but ultimately wrong. If they would take their time to read the codex it clearly states, both in the armoury section about terminator armour and in the rhino and razorback sections, that terminators may not ride in rhinos and razorbacks. There is nothing mentioned at all about terminators and droppods. Instead droppods may only be taken by full 10 man tactical squads (or smaller veteran squads) but fit 12. Just as if Lysander would hop into one with a ten man meatshield. Nifty? Oh yeah!

What they meant was perhaps that normal terminators can't take droppods?

I'm loving that mangled up dreadnought. He definitely looks like he's been through the wars!

That's the intent so I'm happy you noticed. He's a real killer, yesterday he fried 9 fire warriors to death and then exploded in the enemy shooting taking four more fire warriors with him and a shield drone from a command squad. Kick-ass!
