_______________

I am working on a Flawless Host warband. Here is my test mini. I am going for a good tabletop quality with minor conversions on every model and minor battledamage and wear, but not full on weathering. My GS still needs work, but i think i have a good degree of minor conversion going with this guy. He's a bit rough in some areas due to some of his parts being hastily recycled. Please comment.

Note that in a couple ways i am not sticking exactly to the color scheme. Flawless host does not normally have painted trim, but i have done the trim on the gloves in gold and white to spice it up a bit, and the trim on one shoulder in black as they are descended from the Emperor's Children. I like to put little touches like this in but not all of them will have them the same. Maybe i'll do them by squad.

Thanks. I was looking to have a decent amount of bling on him without overloading him and i think i achieved that. Now i just need to practice that freehand a lot. I think though that my leather color is a bit too orange, might tone that down a bit.

I like it. And I think the minor deviations from the standard color scheme add some nice touches. I think it would be a good way to differentiate between different squads. I've done a similar thing in the Khornate warband I have been working on.

Looking forward to seeing more!

I've got the bits for my doomsiren champs and i'm working on them as i type this. I found myself a couple of the EC lord blisters for cheap on ebay so i can have the super fancy doom siren backpacks. Also planning a sorc based on lucius.

As it looks like this might turn into the thread for this whole project i want to start by giving a shoutout to tortoise who's amazing EC have inspired me to try this. I hope he doesn't mind me stealing several of his ideas. Check out his blog here http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155488.

Edit: There, its a project thread now. I'm doing this mostly to help motivate myself.

Alright, here's the wip shots of the first doom siren champion. I'm sure you are all familiar with the old Chaos Lord model (this guy: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_Custom...ain_873x627.jpg

Its a great model, but it suffers from having the head mounted really low down and far forward, more terminator style. I wanted to use it (and got it cheap on ebay ) but i decided that the head just needed to be moved up to the level of where current models have it. So i built him a new neck with some greenstuff and scraps. There's still a fairly large gap between his head and the backpack, so i'm thinking to give him a high dracula style collar like the first guy has.

For the head i wanted something different, but i also realise my limits with greenstuff. I'm just not good enough yet to pull off proper symmetry. So i intentionally went with asymetry with the spikes. I like the random crap sticking out of my head look. Its a nice change from regular chaos horns and spikes.

The powersword is just a bit shaved down on the back edge to make it a bit more slaaneshy. I thought long and hard about what hand i wanted holding what weapon, but in the end i've gone with this starting gun pose. The hands arn't glued on though, so i can still change them up if people have other ideas or suggestions.

EDIT: Decided his head is TOO high now and have lowered it.

You should have cropped the photos. I don't want to see your keyboard especially on free (slow) WiFi. I looked at one close up and it is a bit rough. I don't imagine this is that tough of a scheme. Keep your paints thin. Make sure you have the model really well cleaned and primed. Use the old purple wash thinned if you can. I know a little about painting purple/pink. Some people even think I'm good at it.

Good luck!

Okay, some progress on the champ. I went with a slightly different color for the armor as i decided the other was too pink. The body is pretty much done, the head and left shoulder pad are still wip. The cloak is going to be pure white with the purple streaks, and the helmet on his base is going to be Black Templar as a friend plays them. I'm taking suggestions on the fur though.

These pics didn't come out so good but its good enough for a wip shot.

First of all, the Flawless Host colour scheme is definitely the harder schemes to paint but you've managed to pull off a decent paintjob whilst adding the right type of detailing to make this scheme uniquely yours. I like the fact that you will be doing minor conversions on every model but I do think that the GS work is a tad too rough. The Noise Champion is impressive, but the head is sitting too high up from the body & that's a bit of a letdown to the overall feel of the model.

Yeah, i agree that the head is a bit too high, but its better than too low. My greenstuff is getting better now that i've got some proper sculpting tools other than just the xacto knife. Should have some better GS work up here in the next few days.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, i said days but the flu, midterms, and some good old procrastination have turned it into weeks. But i have gotten plenty of work done! Most of the army i have picked out the pieces for, i've practiced some green stuff, i've refined my color scheme, and i found a cool way to do loinclothes.

I'm painting up the first 4 sonic blaster marines. Here's where they are at now:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/Necrologic/SonicB1wip1.jpg

I've moved to a slightly lighter less pink color than the original test marine. Next on the list for these guys is highlights on the boots, another couple coats on the metalics, and then of course things like heads and arms. Their backdrop also happens to be one of the things thats coming next, although i am undecided on exactly how i will build it up. C&C would be great!

My procrastination hasn't been all bad however, as it has given me time to play more proxy games and get a feel for what i actually want in this army. Here's the list so far, with notes on the progress of each unit.

1500 pts, 26 infantry, 4 armor, 10 kill points, 3 scoring units.

- Daemon Prince: Wings, Mark of Slaanesh, Psychic power depends on the friendliness of the game (lash in tournies). Mostly assembled, awaiting greenstuff.

- Sorcerer: Wings, Lash of Submission, Melta Bombs, Mark of Slaanesh. Got all his pieces. He'll be based off Lucius. Current plan is to give him azrael's sword, and the pistol arm off the doom siren lord but with a bolt pistol. I'm still deciding how i'll do his wings. I'd like to do something more angelic, but i'm not huge on any of the feathered wings GW makes and i don't think i'm good enough with greenstuff. I'd love to give him tentacle wing things like Tyrael from Diablo, but that would be a fairly daunting project. I may give him much more literal tentacle wings, or perhaps a cloak that looks like its wings. Ideas?

- Noise Marines x8: Champion, Power Weapon, Doom Siren, Sonic Blaster x4, Rhino. Champion done! Sonic blasters partially painted, rest of squad mostly done with converting/green stuffing. Rhino basecoated.

- Noise Marines x8: Champion, Power Weapon, Doom Siren, Sonic Blaster x4, Rhino. Champion in pieces awaiting further greenstuffing. Rhino basecoated.

- Noise Marines x5: Blastmaster. In pieces, no work yet.

- Obliterator x3: I am not a fan of the GW oblit model, and i think the "massive mutant with guns sticking out" style of oblit wouldn't really fit the army. So i plan to model them as regular terminators who happen to be carrying heavy weapons that are not normally an option for them. One will have a lascannon, one a multi melta, and one a plasma cannon. Then they will all have power fists and slightly bulkier modified suits/powerplants to support the heavy weapons. May also give each a twin linked plasma/melta/flamer attached on the back of the fist Grey Knight stormbolter style, but i'm undecided on that. I've got all the pieces for them but have not begun any work on them.

- Defiler x2: I have an already assembled but unpainted defiler from my undivded army, and one fresh in the box. The assembled one is mostly magnetized and would be easy to take apart again. I'm planning to do minor conversions on the assembled one but overall leave it looking like a regular defiler. The second i'm going to do very differently, but i have not decided what it'll be like. For weapons, i'm planning to give the regular one an extra CC weapon and reaper, and the other an extra CC weapon and a fancy doom siren counting as the Twin-Linked flamer.

Anyhow, i've got a lot of work ahead of me but having a good idea of where i'm going with all these helps! Any advice, ideas, or input is welcome.

  • 1 month later...

did you make those loincloths?

one of them reminds me of the fur on the space wolf sergeant.

maybe you could use the sw sergeant body with the wolf on the front and the fur hanging at the front.

  • 4 weeks later...

Finally an update! I've got those first four noise marines seen earlier about half finished, but lately i've actually been working on the first rhino.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/Necrologic/FrontSide.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y133/Necrologic/BackSide.jpg

This is actually my first time painting a tank, and i think i've done really well on this one. Its got some mistakes and it isn't all done. Some of my brush strokes are visible if you look hard enough, but its a small enough error that i'm not going to re-do it. I've just got the treads and the book on the left side to finish. I havn't really decided what to do with either. I'm planning to dirty the treads up a bit, but i'm undecided on how much. For the book i want to stay away from pseudo-text as it tends to look bad, so i might just put a slaanesh or flawless host symbol on it. I'm taking suggestions for both these things.

Anyhow, C&C would be nice!

The painting on the next 3 marines is coming along nicely. These ones do not have sonic blasters. I've got a new detail brush which has allowed me a new level of precision in my freehand. It still has a long way to go i think, but i'm pleased as this is my first time working this small.

I had a bit of a problem with the leather i've been putting on the legs of many of my marines. It covered the area where the purple flame stuff gets painted, and it wouldn't look right over the leather. I've solved the problem, but my scheme is becoming even more varient. I do not consider this a bad thing.
