Black Hands Captain

Recommended Posts

I've been asked to build a Captain/Commander for The Black Hands Chapter of Mister X-Slash-X.

Due to my somewhat busy life at this point I haven't had too much time yet, but I've done a bit of work and I just wanted to start showing it.

Sadly I do not have my good camera at this point so the photos are a bit bad.

I wanted to take step by step photos of everything, but I couldn't spare the time taking pictures every cut.

The Captain will be modeled striding, with a rather large sword on his shoulder and his left arm pointing forward.

He will be slightly larger than normal marines (aided by the upright stance) and should look as if he is advancing while directing his marines to the enemy.

As a requested option, the right arm will be replaceable with a power fist/claw with attached stormbolter.

He should convey both a knightly feel and a techy feel.

Some bionics will be included but not as abundant or visible as with my Ironbound.

I started with some legs; I made two versions at this point, both nothing more than reposed yet.

One with Terminator greaves:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6653.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6655.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6654.jpg

One with normal mk6 greaves:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6656.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6657.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6658.jpg

The right greave will receive a piece of spaced armour and some not to obvious bionics.

I also started on the torso, shaving some details from standard torsos and making one slightly enlarged one with a mk8 feel.

The end result should look somewhat like this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/Torso2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6670.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6671.jpg

I immidiatly ran into problems here as a mk8 torso is not made for wearing helmets. I put the rim somewhat forward but this looks awkward. I'll be adding bulk to the front to cover this up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6672.jpg

The Captain will be wielding a rather large sword, which will be part chainblade and part powerblade. and based on the following picture:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/240092py2.jpgThe black part will be chainblade, the rest powerblade. I made a small start, it's not much but you have to start somewhere.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6674.jpg

To do:

- Finish variant torsos

- Start on bionics of the right leg

- Make template for greave armour plate

- Finish variant swords

- Start work on the helmet

- Start work on arms

- Think about a nice techy backpack

Smallish update, still not feeling to well so working bent over a brightly lighted table trying to do small manipulations was not a very great succes this week.

I did a bit on the heads, first I filed a normal head down, which made a pretty knightly head to start with:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands005.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands008.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands009.jpg

Covered the face with plastic with eye holes cut out. I had to cut them a bit to shape when I added them due to glue deformation (I use 0.3 mm plasticard, which deforms really easily when even a little bit too much glue is used, I know this, but it happens still from time to time).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands022.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands020.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands021.jpg

Did the same with a berzerker head:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands023.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands025.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands026.jpg

Also did a bit with the torso, if you can see it you win todays grand prize.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands014.jpg

And a start on the bionics of the right leg:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands018.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands017.jpg

More updates soon, which will hopefully bind the model more together.

Looks good, I prefer the Bezerker version to the normal version, but just my preferences

Also did a bit with the torso, if you can see it you win todays grand prize.

You took the Bezerker torso and the SM torso with the little skull on the chest, cut off the cables on the SM one and the big fancy thing around the belt on the bezerker and replaced it with the SM cables.

Too easy

Good work so far, Looking forward to seeing the finished model

Looking great, as always, brother.

I too am fond of the Berzerker variant. It has the eyebrow ridge I desire, and looks a bit more 'menacing'.

Also, nice work with the Torso. I'm liking the overall shape and trim. It looks quite close to how I envisioned it.

Hope you feel better, and keep up the good work,

Ah, good that you like it, the other one will get a browridge as well, so hold your judgement until it's finished ;P

You wanted vertical vents and a bionic eye piece right? I was planning to start on the more detailing parts of the head tonight.

I like the idea for the chain sword/sword thingy, very nice indeed. Will have to put one together to see how it fits up for my possible upcoming DIY SM army I'm planning(wallet moths depending).

(idea stolen).

Nice job on the helmet by the way.

Quick and small head update, tried some vent carving and wire adding on the less popular helmet:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands063.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands061.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands062.jpg

I didn't want to do it on the popular one in case the wiring didn't come out right so it's just been carved at this point:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/BlackHands053.jpg

I know you want a build-out eye X-slash-X, but I'm somewhat afraid the eyepiece will look out of place on the crusader style helmet. I'll try it on the normal head first, but still...

anyway, more to come.

Looking nice, Brother.

If the eye is giving you grief, don't worry about it. The alternative is to give him a bionic attachment next to the eye, above the ear-piece. There are quite a few helmets with this kind of design.

Another smalish update, I put some putty on the head as a start for the eye-piece and hollowed it out. I'll insert some rod in soon (when I buy new, properly sized rod).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6806.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6808.jpg

I'm having some issues with my camera and the focus is a bit off for all photos, don't know what it is yet (it was just repaired...)

Also started on the bionics in the foot, shaved off a part and filled with grill. There will be a part see through cover over it in a few days.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6802.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/brother_beork/Commissions/Black%20Hands%20Captain/100_6801.jpg

+++ Edit +++

Added the cover for the grill and two lense type thingies (with an actual hole in it, working at a lab has a lot of benefits).

Too bad the lenses are transparent, difficult to photograph (especially with my camera) so the side shot is somewhat unclear. I still need to fill it and it will be clearer then.

I'm digging what your doing Brother. Keep it up!

Quick question though, would it be possible for you to Prime the model when it's done?

As I explained in my PM, my last commission was pretty much ruined by a bad Primer job by me. Also, I'm not sure how I'd go about avoiding the transparent parts, to be honest.

The transparent parts are not to be left transparent, I just couldn't find opaque (sp?) pipet points in my collection (or at work). There is a hole in the tip which should stay open unless you suffocate the model in pimer.

But if you want I can prime it, I only have grey sandable primer though (the only one I use and have).

I'd like to actually, with a layer of primer I can remove the last faults I can't see on plain plastic. Maybe the photos will look better as well ;P

do you still prefer the 'zerker head?

By all means, primer away. I don't have a problem with painting over grey.

I'm still a fan of the 'Zerker helmet, mainly due to it's more 'menacing' feel. Whatever works best, I guess.

If you like the design used for the head above, I'll transport it to the 'zerker head.

Difficult to see in the photo, made a slightly raised area in which the lenses fall. Two lenses are added, one from a 10ul filter tip and one from a 10ul precision tip which is a bit smaller.

I might be able to fit a third one in as well if you prefer. Wires are to be added on the side of the eyepiece.

If it isn't too much trouble to make it on the 'Zerker, then by all means, make it so!

I actually think a 3rd lens would look good, as two seems a little strange to me (not on the model, just in my mind). Whatever looks best, I guess.

Yeah, I'd like to add the mohawk. Make sure they're not too large. My initial Sergeants had large ones, and it didn't look right. I reduced the height of them, and now they look better. I don't have an image of them, but they're roughly half the height of the ones in my thread.
