Apocalypse: Eye of Terror Datasheet Entries

Linked below are the datasheets that were submitted for the Apocalypse: Eye of Terror competition. They have been broken down into the three categories:

  • Legendary Unit (1 or fewer units of vehicles/5 or more models)
  • Small Formation (2 to 6 units of vehicles/5 or more models)
  • Large Formation (7 or more units of vehicles/5 or more models)

For the next week, through 14 October, all members of the Bolter & Chainsword are invited to discuss each of the datasheets and to rate each one on a scale of 1 to 10. How you come to your final rating for each datasheet is up to you. You don’t even have to use whole numbers (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). If your method allows for decimal scores (e.g., 5.5, 7.33, etc.), you may submit those scores – just keep them to 2 decimal places or less (I’ll round off if you give me anything that goes to 3 or more decimal places). The key thing to remember is that a score of 7 or higher means that you think that the datasheet is “ready for publication”. This means that the datasheet is of higher quality than simply being “usable” – you consider it to be a solid example of a good datasheet and would be willing to allow your opponents to use it against you in a game of Apocalypse.

 

Just to reiterate: All members of the Bolter & Chainsword may vote. There is no requirement for members to have submitted a datasheet in order to vote.

 

The average of all of the members’ scores for each datasheet will be the sheet’s “popular score”.

 

The “popular score” and “judges score” for each datasheet will be averaged to determine that datasheet’s final score. The datasheet in each category that has the highest final score will win in that category.

 

Any datasheet that has both a “popular score” and a “judges score” of 7 or higher will advance to Stage 2 (which will be covered later).

 

RULES OF THE ROAD

 

The identity of each datasheet’s creator will remain a secret until the final scores are tallied. The reason for this is that each score should be determined based on the merits of the datasheet – I don’t want anyone rating any sheets higher or lower based on knowing who created each sheet.

 

When discussing the sheets, don’t reveal the scores you are giving. The key is to identify strengths and weaknesses. Each member can come to his/her own determination on the score to give each sheet, taking into account discussions on the pros and cons of each sheet.

 

Datasheet creators have been given an opportunity to provide designer’s notes. Some of them have done so. While the creators are free to participate in the discussion on any sheets they may have submitted, they may not reveal that they are the creators. I know this will be difficult for some, especially if they feel they have to defend their sheet. The trick is to discuss sheets in an objective fashion, being clinical.

 

While each of you is free to submit your votes at any time, I recommend that you hold off for a bit and take into account the discussions. You’d be amazed at how different members notice different things and have different opinions. While you don’t have to agree with their conclusions, you might find that their insights will have an impact on your own opinions.

Deadline for voting is Wednesday, 14 October. Note that members that submitted datasheets may not vote for their own datasheets.

how is compiling the results going? By the way, how many people voted?

At this point I'm just waiting for feedback from one of the judges. Everything else has been compiled, so that judge's scores will be plugged into the spreadsheet, final determination of winners/honourable mentions made, and end of stage critiques posted.

 

There weren't nearly as many voting members as I would have liked. Five or six of the participants didn't even judge. There was the five-member judging panel and about ten or so voting members. I didn't vote, because that would have been unfair.

 

Once I get that last judge's scores/feedback, though, I'll have the results posted for everyone.

 

I've pretty much drafted the announcement and critiques, pending any last-minute changes based on the remaining judge's stuff. Now I'm just putting together the instructions for stage 2.

the only reason I didn't vote was because I haven't played a lot of games of 5th edition, so I did not think I would be able to accurately judge the sheets.

Note that three of the datasheets were entered by me. These were not in the running to win in any of the categories and were entered because they were intended to be included in the same campaign as those datasheets that received the marks of 7 or higher by both the judges and the membership. These datasheets were:

Fortunately, each of these datasheets qualified as an honourable mention, so I can go ahead and include them in the campaign. :)

Comments from the judges have been added to a final reply in each of the individual datasheet discussions.

I’ve re-opened the discussions so that each can be refined for further use. At this point, the discussions are open for suggestion and revision. The ground rules now are that the intent is to improve each of the datasheets. Ultimately, the authority to make changes rests with the creator. Everyone else is just making suggestions.

Some of these might even be developed further, turned into downloadable pdfs and possibly included in the same Eye of Terror campaign that has been mentioned. So even though the datasheets may not have qualified for Stage 2, it's still worth it to develop them further. For those that are developed sufficiently, we'll run a follow-on to Stage 2 if there's enough interest. I'll contact members for datasheets that might be included in the Eye of Terror campaign.

Wow, this was an awesome project. Thanks everyone and congratulations to the winners!

 

I actually came out with a pretty decent datasheet in the end, and it will get a bit of a tweak (tone it down a bit, maybe) and a definite conversion!

 

Out of curiosity, what were the cumulative numerical scores for the datasheets? It'd be nice to know where the general populous stands ;)

Good work to everyone who put effort into this. Not easy to get people to spend time on things you won't make any money from, be thankful the B&C top-hats do this.

Stage 2 will be modeling and painting - we'll need images to go with the datasheets that are going to be available for download.

 

More on that as soon as I have the time to put the finishing touches on the guidelines.
