Imperial Fists WIP

Brother Ducarte

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. This is the first of my new Fists army. Hope to get around 2000points worth painted up over the next few months. Hopefully the day job doesn't cause too much distraction from the Emperors work! C & c welcome.

Gday guys,

thanx for the kind words. :) it's great to finally post something, and everyone is so generous here when it comes to feedback.

I'm assembly line painting these guys, so i'll be doing all their bolters/weps and eyes at the same time. But basically the bolters will be almost black for the casings, with a hint of a grape-ish kinda tinge. There's prolly a better way to describe it!

For the eyes, they'll be a cooler shade of green, actually almost blue-green. I'm going for a fairly saturated look to the eyes, but i might change my mind when the time comes.

As for the yellow recipe, it's a little bit involved, but it looks good if you can be bothered with it. i use a mix of GW, Vallejo Game Colour and Reaper Master Series paints, but you can replace any of the colours for ANY brand or similar shade you like. I gotta reccommend GW Golden Yellow though, it's a fantastic base yellow:

1. Spray u/coat white

2. Base coat slightly thinned down GW Golden Yellow ( only needs to be 2 thin coats. don't worry if it's not totally opaque, you want there to be a little transparency)

3. Shade down with an extremely watered down flesh hue (like super watered down to almost evaporative). I use RPM Blushing Rose but u can use any cooler flesh tone that compliments the tone of your base yellow.

4. Shade down further with a saturated pink colour. I use VGC Squid Pink, also super watered down.

5. Then I use a little bit of RPM Pale Indigo in the deepest recesses and armour joints. But any warmer purple would work fine. Water this part down enough to improve the flow, but not so much that it becomes a wash.

6. Highlight raised areas with a more saturated yellow. Mine was RPM Sun Yellow. Then the highest areas with RPM Lemon Yellow. Any of the "whiter" yellows will work fine for this.

7. Spot highlight the very tips of the highest areas or focal points of the mini with an off white. I use VGC Off White, but a 1:1 mix of Bleached Bone and Skull White would be exactly the same.

If you water down the paints enough, this process shouldn't take too long at all, and you'll end up with some nice transitions that should kinda replicate the way that shadows fall on yellow objects. Lemons are a great example of a natural, while at the same time aesthetically pleasing, yellow that has some very copyable transitions. mmmmmm lemons. Also, it's prolly obvious, but i did all the black sections between the armour first, then the red, then the yellow armour plates, working from the deepest sections first. Otherwise i'd pretty much cry everytime i accidentally put some dark color on the yellow plates.

Anyways, hopefully I'll be able to post some more photos soon. Have a merry Xmas everyone, and don't drink too much piss!

From one IF painter to the next, I must say, these are by far the best I've ever seen. Please don't mind if I shamelessly copy, or attempt to reproduce your colour palette on these marines. I would love to see these with some source lighting on the eyes, and one question: NMM or metallics?

C&c welcome.

(i know the chest eagle isn't really finished, but when he's holding the meltagun, you can't really see it)

Wow! Let me start of with joining in with the others, The Yellow is frigging sweet!

Like the overall look the yellow gives off, compared to the standard it gives a much better "warmth".

Then again the yellow isn't the only painting here that is of high standard. the red and faces came out very well. And I must say that is a very interesting energy effect on the Pfist. Thumbs up!

Smooooth! You sir have some skill with the brush, I also cry when dark paint gets on my yellows and they aren't half as nice as yours. Glad you're sharing your very ambitious 2k in a few month project with us, consider me a fan. I vote for true matallics vs. NMM by the way, good luck.

Very interesting shade of yellow there, I quite like it and look forward to seeing how this army shapes up. Thanks for the recipe, I might have to give that a go nex time I find myself needing some yellow.

Captain fuzzball: the power fist is basically VGC Foul Grreen shaded down with GW Turquoise and then lined with VGC Jade Green. Then the green is blended into the yellow with RMS Blushing Rose.

Jim_123: I'm considering photoing my minis at a new location. The couch in the background does look like an old cardigan!

Smallvictory: have u set yourself a timeline for painting your 2k army? I'm like way behind wat I thought I'd be up to!

I just bought a GW airbrush so basecoating should be much quicker. I'll post some Assault Squad dudes on the weekend. :)
