Snorri's 2nd Company - We are bloodied yet unbowed!

I welcome you, Brothers, to a thread in which I am going to show some of my miniatures.

I´ll start with a WIP-shot of my LPC vow, 10 Tactical Marines including a Sergeant and one special weapon. I apologize for the crappy light, the pics were made in the basement, that´s where my paintstation currently is.

Well, this is at the beginning...piles, piles and more piles of grey:

And another shot of the same "landscape":
http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0111.jpg

As time goes by, the assembly has made some progress:
http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0113.jpg

I would like to introduce to you my very humble Sergeant. I have planned this squad as a reincarnation of my first Tactical Squad, proud and humble servants of the Emperor and Sanguinius, but their time has come. The Sergeant of that squad has fought many battles and many more foes lie dead in his footsteps, he won several battles for me, e.g. once his entire squad was killed by a Demolishercannon from a Leman Russ, he passed his Ld test only to charge furiously into that tank and tearing it into pieces with his massive Powerfist.
Against the horrendous Hivefleet the fight seemed already lost, but this proud warrior stood against two Carnifexes which had slain many of his brothers and shmashed their heads, forcing the Hive to retreat.
So, he is now honoured with a shiny new bolter(a really big boltpistol msn-wink.gif ) and a polished metalplate for his war-torn face.

And another point of view:

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0115.jpg

Well, that´s it for now. Please let me know what you think, and of course comments and criticism are welcome!

Oh, and it burns me to ask everyone here a question:
I have now received some Vallejo paints, and I don´t have any experience with that stuff, so how were your results with Vallejo Bloody Red/Gory Red layered over a Chaos Black foundation? My army has a rather bright red as colour, but currently I am out of white primer, so I thought I´d give Chaos Black a try.

I like you have a marine with a history!

The SH termies are lookin nice too

Your Sergeant Lorenzo is looking good, your reds are very full and rich

Thanks, mates, glad you like them! I will take better pictures of the SH termies when they´re done, theres still some work to do on Valencio and Deino, and I have to drill out their legs to attach them to their bases.

Here I have another termie, the paintjob is a little bit old, but the light is definately better ;) :

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/CSC_0037.jpg

Nice termies creeping in! Love the fluff for the Sarge, its nice that it is true as well. Powerfist's ftw :P Looks like his squad have been decimated by some vile xeno weopon again - they have lost their heads ;)

Thanks muchly.

Yeah, I decided to paint their heads seperately, because those cables in the backpack are hard to paint when there´s a head between.

I have also found some pics of my older HG Standard Bearer with 2nd Company Banner - freehand, of course ;)

Without the banner:

Again, thanks for watching!

A short non-picture update:

The Sarge(will call him Sgt. Badass from now on...that boltgun just rocks! :D ) has his armour finished, and I am very pleased with the outcome.

It is a very nice, deep red, yet it is bright at the same time.

I have also divided the Squad into three groups(of three marines, Sgt. Badass excluded), first group has its red also finished, maybe a thin wash Baal Red or two, but again I am satisfied.

I´ll move on with the remaining groups, revealing a dark and most disturbing secret of my painting method, and if I find my camera, I´ll take some photos. :P

That banner is really something to look at. I think my favorite part would have to be the writing. I thought you said you had problems with freehand Snorri. That's crazy talk! That banner is top notch. The battle damage on the standard bearer looks good. I struggle with doing battle damage so I am going to study that vet for awhile. The yellow on the helmet is executed with skill. I like your bright red as well. Too bad we are going to have to paint the yellow helmets gold on the vets now. I don't know about you but if that's the case I am leaving my yellows yellow and I'll paint gold once I have new minis. You do good work and I hope to see more of it.

Obey the Emperor.

firstly.. nice job on that flag, its making me want to paint my own one better...

i dont want to sound wierd, but the marine has battle damage but the flag dont... if it was my flag i would put one or two bullet holes in it, to make it look like its seen battle, but thats my opinion...

im going to keep my eye on this thread cant wait to see more of your work,

You are too kind, Seva! My problems with freehanding are those tiny little chapterbadges, I still haven´t figured out how to paint them. I think there´s a tutorial how to paint Blood Angels symbols, I will have a close look at it. The banner was rather huge, so it is much easier to paint, and on that day my hand seemed to be really calm. ;)

Thanks! Yes, I didn´t think about that back then...but now, I am too lazy to repaint it. :nuke:

Still haven´t found my camera, I think it will take some time. Well, time for painting!

Again, thanks for the kind words.

  • 2 weeks later...

Alrighty then, here comes the second WIP Update:

The Sergeant in his unfinished glory:

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0089.jpg

He needs some improvement, on the banner and on several places on the armour.

The Red is actually a mix of GW Blood Red + Vallejo Bloody Red. While "Bloody Red" adds consistency and opacity, "Blood Red" adds the colour which is not given by "Bloody Red". I hope this was understandable.

Banner close-up, I have a question to all you guys regarding the Chaptersymbol. Do you think it looks "BA" enough? I do have my doubts.

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0087.jpg

Here is the first group of marines with their PA done:

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0093.jpg

Btw, don´t you hate it when you´re painting along, minding your own business and then "OH MY GOD!" a pink marine bolters you in the face?

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0094.jpg

:P I chose that pose because it reminds me of DoW II Marine: "Neutralizing."

Well, that might be somehow disturbing, but I painted my marines pink to achieve a bright red over a black foundation, which has worked well in my very humble opinion. The pink was mixed with a bucketload of GW Skull White and some GW Blood Red + Vallejo Bloody Red.

Here are the pink guys:

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0097.jpg

Well, and a group shot. Again, the heads missing, as are the bolters:

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad309/Snorrinorrison/DSC_0099.jpg

Well, thats it. Thanks for watching!

er....ya, sorry about that...i hate that colour  only looks good on my demeanettes and for a good reason at that...theyre...like...you knmow girly :P

but enough ranting nice progress m8 :) small grip on the chapter symbol, the righter part of the "eagle" thing above the blooddrop seems....strange, misshapen somewhat perhaps? its not the same as the left part at any case ;)

but yea, the "neutralizing" marine looks cool, just fix the colour...please!

That is indeed a brilliant red and the progress looks good. I have used the pink base coat for another mini (not BA) in the past because I wanted super red blazing armour.

I have to say I love the way you pose your guys, something I have never been very good at. They all look so dynamic and purposeful =]

Thanks for all the kind words, guys!

@Terminatorinhell:

Yes, after two thin coats of Red(GW + Vallejo) I wash them about 2-3 Times, again thinned down with water to keep the armour rather clean, without stains from too much of the wash.

ut yea, the "neutralizing" marine looks cool, just fix the colour...please!

Don´t worry Dem, Mr. Red is on the way!

Thanks for the input on the banner, I will rework it!

Here is another WIP-Shot of Brother Deino, the red is already finished here:

More to come soon!

Snorri, I have a hobby question:

So far, nobody has really explained to me how to properly glue models after their parts got painted. I just saw on the pink Marines that you are using this technique (Bolters, heads) so I hope you can explain it to me.

I always fully glue my models first so I get good connections (especially when working with plastic glue on plastic models). If I painted the parts first, I'd have to use super glue and still it would just glue layers of paint together, but not the model itself. Scratching the paint off from the connecting parts again sounds like a real mess and potentially ruins one's careful paint job.

So, what do you advice, Brother Painter?

I see your point. Here are some methods which have worked well for me:

1. Don´t paint the parts of the model which you want to glue together after the painting. In my example, the heads´ downsides and the "holes" in the torsi are still black, because the more paint is applied on these places, the harder it will get to get the glue working nicely.

2. If the first point was impossible to execute, then you still can take your hobby knife and scratch the paint from the model. If you want to use plastic glue, I highly recommend this step before proceeding. I am not a fan of this method, though, I prefer no. 1 and/or no. 3.

3. Use superglue instead of plastic glue. Superglue works perfectly on plastic models even with some (thin) layers of paint on the connections.

I hope this was helpful for you!

Thanks for sharing that, it has cleared up the same question for me. I always thought there would be an issue sticking paint to paint as I felt the joint would then only be as strong as the connection of paint to the model. Also I believe in building everything first and then those awkward bits way back there that I just can't get the brush to, well they are just as awkward to see. However with this knowledge perhaps I will try out some 'sub assemblies' in the future.

Yep, thank you very much, that indeed was helpful. You know, it's not like you told me something completely new that I hadn't figured out by myself yet, but because of my lack of experience I didn't trust these methods yet. With you input, however, I may preferably try method 1) and 3) as well.

Just a final question to make sure I understand you correctly: you are saying that even after basecoating the model with the spray, the plastic glue still works? I am a little surprised because in order to work, that type of glue has to melt the plastic slightly, so I guess that's why you resort to method 3) after all. <_<

I hope I haven't hijacked your thread too much, but this was just an opportunity too good to let it pass. :P
