Hey everyone. Here is a little update to the Chaplains. I have another post on the Blood Angels forum where I have done the first steps of this conversion. Mind you, the poses are not decided in the least. Right now I am just trying to get the whole green stuff thing down. Doing this is a bit different than doing helmets. I have been following Lamenter's fine tutorial and I would like to thank him for putting that up. It has helped quite a bit. Anyhow here is the latest progress for Lemartes.

I don't know if you can see it but I tried to mold the abdomen on this particular body. That was a real treat.

Here is the one with the tabbard. I am not set on the torso, I might put a plain one in its place. It doesn't seem as thick as it should be from the side but that might just be me.

The arms are there just to get an idea of what I want to do. I also plan on taking the tabbard around the back as well.

Thanks for looking.

Latest version of Lemartes. I have yet to put the iron halo on him. Not decided yet as to weather or not I will give him the tabbard thingy, Still have a purity seal here or there as well and something for the crozious. The chains were a real pain to do. I think I must have done 10 sets at least. Anything I am missing here? Anyhow take a look and tell me what you think.

Looking for opinions about the tabbard that I have added. I think it makes the model look more chaplain-like. I don't know about the company champion shoulders either, I want the shoulders to be big and massive and for some reason I can't seem to find plasti-card anywhere in KC so using termy shoulders would be difficult as I would have to use Green stuff to make the edges and what not. I have no idea when I am going to put the iron halo on him, he looks really cool with it on btw. I have to clean this model up still and that means hitting him with a toothbrush as I have had my hands on the helmet quite a bit and I HATE tide marks. Well here he is so far, once I get some feedback I am going to go forward. He is really close to priming.

So my questions to you are:

1. Should we keep the tabbard/cloth thing or go without it. I think he looks top-heavy without it, but less graceful with it. Should Lemartes be brutal or graceful? I'm leaning toward brutal.

2. Do the shoulders work or should I use a regular shoulder and just try and sculpt it into a skull of some sort? I know I can do this I just have no idea how to do it so to speak. One good thing about doing this is that I am working on my green stuff skills and that area of my hobby has been lacking up until this point. Doing the helmets was cake compared to this and this is pretty basic stuff here. I have a long way to go.

3. More purity seals? Does he look chaplainy enough or does he need more skulls and seals? I could probably add some parchment to the firing arm.

4. When do you attach the iron halo? I hate gluing to an already painted model, I always seem to get glue on the paint and it drives me nuts!

Thanks for any comments!

I really like this model. But I think the arms look really weedy. If your having trouble with posing termie arms, do what Doghouse does. He cuts the termie arm at the elbow pad and adds a forearm from a power armour arm, then green stuffs around it, filling it to the level of the 'cuff' bit.

Here is Lemartes with a couple of coats of gray on him. This will slowly build to black.

i wasnt sold on the tabbard when you did it, i thought it looked a bit heavy for a mini that should look swift and agile like lamartes (but then again i dont like the gw termie chaplain for the same reason)

although i disagree with the tabard it doesnt stop this looking great. i am really liking this model and cant wait to see it complete :)

Thank you all for the C&C. I can see the point about the arms. I think next attempt I do I will use more terminator bits. I think cutting termy arms and attaching regular forearms to them works fine, I will give that a go for the next truescale guy I do. I didn't do it here as I am wondering how to make it look seemless on a model with CC weapons. I'll check out Doghouses' thread. Hopefully with shoulders and the jump pack he will look a bit more proportioned.

I am almost finished with the black on the armor. At this point I will start using the washes to get him to the darkness I will want. I could keep going with adding black to the gray, but I think it will be fine where it is when it's all said and done. The other colors on the model will make the black look blacker anyhow. You might look at the model and ask yourself how much more black can he be and the answer is "none more black." Though I could slap some more black paint on him, at this point I haven't used pure black at all, it's still mixed with gray but like I said before the washes should take care of the last bit of black and smooth out the transitions at the same time. Enjoy and as always any C&C is welcome.

Here is the last coat of "black" I will put on the model before I start the washes.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC02166-2.jpg

I will start with some leviathan purple, then go to asurman blue, and finish with badab black. Those colors should all mix together nicely and give the black a pretty good look so to speak.

Milhail: I use the GW line of paints. So far this model I have used mostly fortress gray, then codex gray, then shadow gray, then black. You just start with the codex gray and slap 4-5 coats of that on, then start mixing codex with it and do 4-5 coats of that etc. You just keep adding the darker colors to the original color on your pallet until you get it to where you want it to be. I use a wet pallet to paint from by the way. It makes this way of painting much easier for me. As far as colors go you just put the darker stuff where the shadows are. The more steps it takes you to get to the darkest bits the better it will look in my opinion. I still have trouble with this bit actually. When I move the figure around during painting I sometimes forget where I want the highlights to be. I will start with washes tonight and I'll post something up for each one. The model comes together once the washes are on. That is one of my favorite parts to do actually.

Keep your paints thin as well. Thin paints will make this work for you.

Thanks for the info, I never thought of painting from light to dark. I always go from dark to light. Please do post each wash stage if you don't mind. I may actually pick up a brush again after a ten year break. Your work has really inspired me for some reason. I look forward to your progress.

I figured since I am experimenting with the whole true-scale thing I may as well experiment with some other techniques. After a bunch of reading I have decided to try and learn how to do NMM. So here we go.

Here is after the purple and blue washes. I think I did around 4 or 5 of each color, and I thinned them down about 3:1.

At this point he has the black wash on him and I have started painting other things on him as well. I plan on adding more highlights to the NMM.

If anyone has any tips on the NMM I am all ears. It is taking me awhile to wrap my head around it.

wow that nmm is looking great though i would have done it so that it was one block on the BP rather than a line in the middle... if you understand that jibberish...

its looking great so far and i take back the tabbard comment completely, with some paint on it looks perfect!

  • 1 month later...

Here is the final version of my true-scale Lemartes. This completes the Librarium painting challenge. I hope you like it.
