Ian Sturrock's painting challenge WIP thread

I have been almost 100% distracted by assembling my new Tyranid army (I couldn't help it! I blame Space Hulk!), so have been very lax on my painting challenge work. This means I have not much more than 1 week to paint 5 Termies, 1 Predator, and 1 Venerable Dread... uh-oh.

Here's the preliminary pics:

Venerable Dreadnought, customised & converted from a standard Dread (with added decorative nuts & bolts, Green Stuff & modelling rope banner, plasticard crenellations, decorative archways from 40K buildings, etc.). The base is Space Hulk themed. The whole thing has been basecoated bone white & given a 2nd spray of white from above to give it some initial highlights, but I've yet to start the paint job proper.

Next, the predator. Not only have I not even started on the painting on this one... it already has a mediocre paint job. Fortunately it's a *thin* mediocre paint job, for once, unlike most of the 2nd-hand minis I buy from eBay. I've ground away the broken remains of the old main turret gun & glued a new plastic Autocannon in place, as well as removing the old sponson guns (one heavy flamer and one heavy bolter... confused) & replacing them with some old-style lascannons from a Razorback. The plan with this one is to basecoat it lightly in silver, right over the top of the existing paint job, then give it a coat of Dark Angels green, then scrape some of the green off to reveal silver underneath. Watch this space!

Finally, 5 Deathwing Terminators, converted from Blood Angel terminators from the new Space Hulk game. I've removed the Blood Angel iconography (there was rather a lot of it...) and added a load of Dark Angels bling instead. The bases are magnetised, so I can have either small Space Hulk bases or 40mm terminator bases. Eventually these bases will be Space Hulk themed too. 4 of these minis have been basecoated, and the other is still awaiting his first lick of paint.

Looking good, especially liking the dred. It kind of reminds me of an Imperator titan - which is never a bad thing!

How long did it take you to 'fix' the terminators and put on the DA iconography?

Thanks for the kind words on the Dread -- I just hope my paint job does it justice!

Took about 2 hours to get rid of *most* of the BA stuff off the 11 terminators, and another hour or so to add most of the basic bling, but then several hours more of spotting other bits & pieces that needed sorting, adding green stuff to fill gaps, etc... maybe 6-7 hours in total?

Rather rough update -- the Predator is almost finished, with a light coat of silver spraypaint, then 3 coats of fairly well thinned Dark Angels Green, then 2 washes with some home-mixed dark green acrylic wash (matt medium, flow aid, water, emerald green ink, black ink), then rubbing off some of the green on the edges to reveal silver. Dread has had a couple of washes of a similar home-made wash (but with flesh tone & a bit of burnt umber instead of the green & black) over the bone bits, & black undercoat over most of the stuff that's not going to be bone. Not that you can probably see most of the detail...

Oh, and the basic wash recipes can be found here:

Predator's almost finished. I added some 2mm wire exhausts, to replace the long-broken-off plastic ones. Guns are pretty much done, as is the body. I need to finish off the headlights, and maybe add a DA symbol or two, and paint the new exhausts, and add dust and mud -- then it's done!

The dread is getting there... still got a stack of stuff to do on this, though.

IanSturrock that dready model looks amazing. I like the large banner complete with bullet holes. So did you convert it yourself or is it an ebay find like the Pred?

Cheers

Thanks, Isiah. The dread is all my own work. :) Most of it is from the standard Dreadnought kit, but there's a load of other bits from stuff like terrain, TH/SS termie sprues, DA upgrade sprues, Ravenwing sprues, etc., as well as the various modelling materials.

Got him almost finished now:

I've named him Cassiel, who is traditionally the Archangel of Saturn... and so associated with slowness, time, death, hell, & eternity, all very appropriate for a Deathwing dread. :)

I have to finish the banner off (it's had another coat of red since these pics were taken, so that's looking a bit more even, but I need to add a freehand pic onto the red, next), and do some more washes & highlights here & there, but it's pretty much finished, really. Oh, and the base needs some dust -- he's wandering round a thousand-year-old Space Hulk, after all!

Incidentally, the scroll on the Storm Shield that's part of his DCCW reads "I.W.S.Y.S" -- I Will Save Your Souls. The subtext being, By Sending You To Meet Your Maker.

The Predator, Fulmen, is almost finished, too, but isn't photographable right now as it's covered in turps from the dust-adding stage. Fulmen is either Latin for "Thunderbolt" or for "My Other Predator Is Magnetised, So It's Not Stuck With Lascannon Sponsons" -- I'm not quite sure which.

I lolled ;)

Very nice conversion work on that dread, looking to turn out very well when painted aswell.

(Going to make it today, posting the completed work?)

OK, going to use this same thread for this year's challenge, too!

3 old school rhino chassis. I'll be doing them up so that they can double as razorbacks or whirlwinds. This is them after extensive removal of many layers of horridly painted crud. I have to finish at least 1 for the Librarium Painting Challenge, but will probably at least get the other 2 primed at the same time.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs800.ash1/169057_479413106866_596296866_6513214_2623219_n.jpg

Xmas drop pod! This was a pressie to myself, as it was on offer at half price from the local toy shop. Also needs painting for the Challenge.

5-man Scout Squad, also in need of painting for the Challenge. Old-school gamers may recognise that these minis are originally from the Tyranid Attack boardgame (which I sadly no longer have). The sarge has been given a newer Power Fist, and one of the scouts a shotgun.

This one isn't part of the Challenge, but I'm going to aim to finish it by then anyway... 5-man Devastator squad, with a sarge, 2 plasma cannons, and 2 missile launchers. Got to add a bit more DA bling and maybe some Green Stuff robes to these guys.

nice to see more of the space hulk termies being made into deathwing, just brought some myself. what undercoat did you use on the termies

The 3 rhinos are just about ready for undercoating now. I've replaced the broken exhausts with pieces of 2mm welding wire, cut and bent to shape (nice and easy to work) and replaced some lost rivets, as well as adding a few Dark Angels symbols. The hatches and/or commanders are mostly removable, so as to replace them with Whirlwind parts if need be. The right-hand one has the start of some new detailing on the front, round the viewing slit, but I need to fill some gaps with green stuff before I can paint that one.

So, I failed this year's challenge!

No excuses are entirely valid, really -- I had lots of time -- but here's the main reason:

I got a place at the UKGT at Maelstrom Games, via the reserve list (see my post in the Army Lists section), and had to concentrate on fully painting an army for that, less than a week before the Librarium deadline... and the new DA FAQ coming out between my sign-ups pretty much guaranteed that that army was going to be quite different to anything I'd used before! So I spent my hobby time before the tourney, converting up my Deathwing to have a lot more TH/SS, converting my Speeders to be Typhoon/Multimelta, and frantically attempting to get everything painted in time for that event. I just ran out of time to do the Challenge things, none of which, sadly, were needed for the tourney army!

In partial compensation for my failure, I offer these two pics of the Deathwing squads I took to the tourney. I was still adding layers of washing and details to these at 1am on the morning of the tournament...

I will get an article written too... might do something on converting Space Hulk termies to Deathwing, since I now have lots of experience in doing that. :cuss
