Angels Revenant - CoI

Arkhanist

Recommended Posts

I've been out of the hobby for about 5 years or so, and my painting arm has grown rusty! I've recently got back into it because I managed to get hold of a 3rd edition of Space Hulk - and the termies in there are far too nice for to butcher without getting (a lot) of practise in first, so I figured I'd dust off my (very) old custom chapter, the Angels Revenant from the loft - which with the new BA codex, is handy, as they're a BA successor chapter. Anyway, I've been lurking for a week or so picking up tips for tackling my mini-project of getting a couple of squads of termies painted to tabletop standard so I can get some games of new Space Hulk in with the missus without risking damaging the boxed ones. After that, I'll have a go at resurrecting the rest of the chapter. I've a mixture of old metals, old plastics and some slightly more modern ones. Bit like my paints, which range from 20 years old to a week old. Some shades you just can't get any more...

As I say, I'm very rusty so please be gentle! C&C very much welcome, as these are definitely a WIP and I'm trying to come to a couple of decisions. I'm about 3 days in so far.

( old pics here, in anyone's interested in the old scheme.)

edit: changed scheme, so termies relegated from first post. Should make it load quicker too!

OK, plan B. I wasn't happy with the direction the chapter scheme was going; it looked reasonable enough on the couple of test squads I did back before I left the hobby, but coming back to it I just kept running into problems with my entire chapter in chaplain colours!

Anyway, I've decided a modern reboot is in order for the chapter, and I'm going to focus on getting an entire army up and going, not just termies.

I'm loving the new foundation colours and inks, and doing nice reds is way easier. I've also discovered flow improver, which is *way* better than water for blending!

Here's where I've got to so far; I've got 7 out of the 10 man AoBR up to this state while I mess with the red (a couple of em will need to be cleaned up in the sheepdip), but I think I'm fairly happy with the general way of it now. Just need to decide on bolter colour, really - leaning towards a charcoal grey. Obviously, not too bothered about these marines, which is why they're practise pieces! More fun squad next, for sure.

(Apologies for the photo quality, I've really got to to get some brighter lights)

After this, in no particular order, I've got 2 full JP assault squads which need some special weapons; will probably do meltas. I'll likely do one squad with magnet JPs/backpacks so I can take them as foot troops in a rhino for screening.

I've got enough spare bits to tackle a sternguard and vanguard squad - looking forward to modelling that one!

I've got a full 10 man termie squad, a 5 man assault termie squad which I'm going to do with magnetised arms I think.

I do have a sanguinary guard squad, but i'm going to use those bits for my HQs; I think the winged JPs will go nicely on a custom dante, captain and chaplain.

Plus, I should be able to model in about a 10 man death company. Haven't got any vehicles yet, but I've got enough JP and footsloggers to deal with first!

Anyway, C&C on the red welcomed!

Been doing some cleanup and basecoating on the remainder of the squad. Been trying to resist doing any conversion work till I get the painting down, but sarge from the AoBR set was just crying out for a head swap. Figured I might as well magnetise a couple of weapon choices while I was at it...

Soon as I get some fresh GS, going to sort out his neck joint. Milliput is a bit crumbly for detail work...

Wasn't happy with the method of painting the scheme for the 1st half of the squad, so sent them to the sheep dip and did the 2nd half of the tac squad. Not entirely happy with the metallics yet, but it'll do for now! Some inconsistencies as I've been adjusting as I go.

These'll do as a template for the rest of the Company; now to crack on with my CoI squads - 1 assault squad, one captain and honour guard, and 1 terminator squad.

Somewhere in this lot is the parts I'm using for my Honour Guard and terminator squad.

I like the painting you've done with the red. Dark and dirty, but still regal. Also, charcoal for the bolters looks pretty good, but I feel the bolters are too light in comparison to the depth of red on the Marines. Do you plan on darkening them?

I saw the AoBR Sergeant and had to laugh, as I did the same thing with the head. I didn't swap it out, but just cut it off and repositioned it to follow his arm. It looks to strange to see him pointing off to the side.

Nice work overall, I'll keep and eye on this stuff.

I like the work you're doing Arkhanist! It's good to be back to the hobby, huh? I just got back into it too after about 5 years.

You should post on the Blood Angels' boards!
