Flesh tearer terminators

Mortarion

Recommended Posts

Quite soon after the new codex was released I started painting the lovely Space hulk terminators for my Flesh tearer army. And now I have enough for a squad. They have had some minor conversions (mostly removing BA iconography) but are mostly as they were. I really like the sculpts. They have a bit more battle damage then my normal marines as they are supposed to be ancient and can withstand lots of damage without being destroyed.

All of the terminators.

The sergeant. The face look a little strange in this picture. He is not wearing corpse paint in reality, it's just the shadows.

And the "normal" terminators.

Very nice! As a fellow son of Sanguinius, I comend thee. That said, I always imagined buzzsaws would fit in better on Flesh Tearer chainfists, ya'know, because of their chapter symbol. Still, beautiful work brother.

These are sick. I prefer a cartoony clean paint job but you've got your own style going on backed up with some very solid painting skills, which give them a gritty, mean feel. You've done these models proud.

Holy freakin crap. Among all of the amazing models that show up on this forum, your Flesh Tearers are easily among my favorites. They capture the feel of what they are supposed to be so well, not too flashy, not too busy, and yet amazing attention to detail and a somber, gritty aesthetic. Very well done.

wow!

Those are very cool terminators. Having painted approx 40% of a Blood Angel Company, as well as a squad of the Space Hulk Terminators. I'm starting to wish I'd done them as Flesh Tearers, these are a pure inspiration.

Would love to see your whole army.... pretty please

Thank you! It's really encouraging to hear that people like one's work.

@SanguiniusReborn: That's a good idea. However, I use buzzsaw blades as powerfists for my power armoured marines, so I want to keep the actual chainfists looking different.

@Shinigami: It's simply old Scab red highlighted with Blood red. The trick is to water down the highlights. Otherwise the contrast is way too much. However, the current Scab red seems to be more brown then the old one, so you might have to mix in a little Blood red or Red gore to get the correct colour.

@Douchie: I have no current pictures of my entire army as I'm in the middle of adding new units to it. But here are links to my older threads on this army:

Beautiful! I love those sculpts. Too bad (for me) they have so much BA iconography on them. I'd love to use them for my Dark Angels or Space Wolves, but I'd never have the energy to clean all those drops of blood off. >.< Anyways. Good job!

I second all of the great comments: these are really top notch. I particularly like the free-handed flesh tearers symbol, the power sword, and the overall battle damage. Good job.

Two questions:

1. How did you achieve the dirt look on the feet? That detail is very convincingly achieved. It's something I'm anxious to do on my yellow armored boots (not decided if they're imperial fists yet or not, but either way, they're yellow), and I'm worried I'll mess up the nice layering I've got going on. Any suggestions? It looks like dry-brushed layers of brown, and maybe some rotting flesh? Any brown washes on there by any chance? Do you think the same colors would work over yellow armor?

2. Are the chips in the armor just silver paint put directly onto the armor, or was the damage modeled (i.e. carved) before painting? Did you use any layers, or just the one layer of silver? I really want some battle damage on my guys, but I'm worried about messing up a paint job that I'm proud of already.

I guess that was more than two questions. Sorry to turn your awesome work into a plea regarding my own models, but I'd very much like to use some of your techniques.

Thanks for showing your work. Good job.

Thanks again!

@Captain Hwarang:

1. It's simply a drybrush of Bestial brown followed by a light drybrush of Bubonic brown. On yellow armour I would skip the bubonic brown, since it would meld into the armour colour. Use either Bestial brown for a dirt look or Bleached bone for sand.

2. The larger dents in the armour are carved with a knife but the smaller are just painted on. They are painted black after painting the armour. They are then painted with Boltgun metal, leaving a little back around them. When highlighting I highlight the area around the battle damage, which is totally wrong from a realistic standpoint, but I like the look.

@Brother Saturnus: The armour is painted with old Scab red and then highlighted with watered down blood red. Unfortunately, the new scab red is very different from the old one. I managed to get somewhat close by mixing the new scab red with Scorhed brown and Chaos black and then adding small amounts of Liche purple and Blood red.

HOLY LORD DEUS IMPERATOR!!! These are incredible! Definitely some of the best painting I've ever seen outside GW results (which probably are given huge budget, lots o' tries and a good year to do it) Again, incredible, good job!

great SH TDA!!! love 'em off topic: maybe you can help, i remember awhile back (10+years) GW white dwarf had a FT army that was like 3-4 squads of jump pack assault marines, but it had an "honor guard/vanguard" squad that had like a a slate gray/ and maroon color combo, helms and shoulder pads were maroon, and what would have been black was the grey.. would you happen to have any pictures like this, or know where i can find this army pic? or any info
