Toschenko's big & yellow log - Battleworn Imperial Fists

Recommended Posts

Ok, so this is my first post here - I've been quite active as an user of another famous GW-related site B) , but being in the process of giving my ever-growing collection of space marines some much needed love I felt this was the right place to post my progresses.

I chose the Imperial Fists chapter mainly because I realized that all my paintjobs were good but appeared somewhat dark when on the battlefield - so I went for a bright scheme, hoping the detail would be not lost when seen from some distance away. Then I painted one marine, and realized why I hated painting them: I always found standard marines too "plain" and somewhat boring (especially whit a single colour scheme) so I tried too add some weathering and... bang! I liked the result so much that I quickly (for my standards) painted a full squad. Pleased from the beginning I went further and experimented other weathering techniques, until I found a good trade-off between appearance and speed using weathering powders such as MIG pigments. The experiment is still going on since I usually tend to try slightly different approaches with every mini/squad I work on, but I think I'm almost done with the general recipe I'll use for the rest of the army.

So, without further ado and beginning from the last painted mini in terms of time, I'm glad to introduce you the Imperial Fists 4th company - Toschenko's style:

These are lush. Really, really lovely weathering. It particularly suits the Imperial Fists, what with their no nonsense kind of approach.

Any recommendations on specific weathering methods/products? (Especially for tanks, I think mine look a little plain without.)

Thanks for the reply. I'll post a step-by-step of the weathering method I'm using now, but you'll have to wait a couple of days. It involves the use of MIG dark enamel wash (thanks God for the very existence of this stuff) and their pigments range.

Another bunch of pics, going up to the first ones I painted. Hope you can see the improvement.

That'd be awesome, no rush, but I'd love to see how you did it.

That guy ^^ (Sternguard) is beaut. The weathering works especially well because he's quite ornate.

Nice to see you posting here Toschenko (and yes you can mention Warseer here, we're buds in a forum sense).

Always loved the rugged look of your Imperial Fists. Hadn't seen these ones with the red/white checks though. Be good practice for when you do one of them up as a Legio B&C Marine right? :D

Yeah, I was ironic - forum rivalries are for girlies :P. I posted them even over at Warseer, maybe you missed that particular update.

These are nice, these are veerrryyy nice! <_<

Please don't tell me that you bought Telion 4 times just for his bolter!

Eh eh no, bolters are converted from regular ones (it would have been very complicated to remove the weapons from the metal scout models). It's a quite straightforward conversion, just add a plastic scope and a silencer made of a plasticard rod cut to the correct lenght with green stuff fins.

I see what you're pointing out, the rhino is my last completed paintjob and it's probably my best one so far. I hope that the rest of the sternguard unit will come out at the same quality. BTW, I've seen some of your works and taking a compliment from you has quite a good effect on my ego :D . Thank you

Ok, while you wait for the step by step tutorial I'll post these pics I took a while ago: they depict the painting of a standard marine from the beginning to the final details (unfortunately I have only these four pics, so you'll to be content of these for now)

Step one: using an airbrush and starting from a white undercoat I pre-shade the model with Tamiya red brown, then I spray Golden Yellow all over trying to not totally cover the shading

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_2512.jpg

Step two: now I paint the details. Scratches are made only with diluted charadon granite applied in a random pattern, checkers are simply dark flesh highlighted with blood red (for the red part) and astronomican grey highlighted with skull white for the white part, the chest eagle is astronomican grey washed with asurmen blue. At this stage I also use MIG dark wash as a pinwash to make all the recesses stand out and give depth to the mini.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_2516.jpg

Step three: using MIG pigments I weather the figure. I used Old Rust, Standard Rust, Light Rust and Black Smoke (please note that these tones are used to simulate accumulated dust and NOT rust, so they're not applied as it would be correct for a realistic rust effect - my marines are supposed to be deployed in a "martian desert" environment, so reddish dust has to be used). As you may see this step make the mini lose a bit of definition so I may re-apply MIG wash were necessary. After the wash has dried I fix the pigments with two very light passes of Tamiya matt spray varnish.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_2517.jpg

Step four: final details and highlights. Red is highlighted with a mix of blood red + blazing orange and then pure blazing orange, yellow with Sunburst Yellow (the same colour is used to underline every scratch to give them a tridimensional feel). The chest eagle is highlighted with astronomican grey. Eyes are painted with dark angels green, washed with thraka green, highlighted with scorpion green and then a skull white dot is added to simulate light reflection. A gloss varnish coat on the eyes and you're done.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_2519.jpg

Hope this help in some way, I'll take more pics whit the next minis. Until then, here's what I'm working on at the moment:

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0018.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0016.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0019.jpg

It's still very WIP, I tried to get a zenital light effect by airbrushing the blue lighter shades from the above and then working with blue glazes to smoothen the transitions. The vest is still missing all highlights.

Double post, seems that the old good Ezekiel didn't have that much success :)

I've put him on hold while I'm deciding if I like the paintjob so far or not: now I'm even more convinced that maybe that particular mini isn't made for me - I somewhat like it, but it seems that I can't paint him in a satisfying way (at least for me).

BTW, this time I wasn't lazy (something new for me) and started working on some sternguards:

First step:: using the airbrush, pre-shade with tamiya red brown and lay down a basecoat spraying golden yellow.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0037.jpg

Second step: this time I tried the sponge weathering technique for infantry minis, in an attempt to get a "standard painting procedure" to give me the best appearance /speed trade-off. I had to correct the weathering by brush in some spots, but I think it came out well. Also the leg and elbow joints got painted black

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0021.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0024.jpg

Third step: add some details: astronomican grey highlighted with white for the helmet and shoulder pads trims, astronomican grey washed with asurmen blue for the chest eagle. Using MIG excellent dark wash I do a pinwash to enhance general detail.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0026.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0030.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0027.jpg

Fourth step: pigment weahtering, using the usual sequence of Dark mud->Old rust->Standard rust->Light rust->Black smoke. Bolter was painted in a 1 part charadon granite + 2 parts chaos black mix, purity seals and parchment with a flat base of Dheneb stone, red parts with dark flesh. Then I sealed the pigments with two very light passes of tamiya matt spray varnish.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0034.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0035.jpg

Next steps will bring highlights and final detailing so stay tuned (if you like it so far).

Your painting represents really high niveau.

The weathering and all the small details are really great. I got the "dust, not rust" effect at first glance, so it works.

The only thing I'm a bit unsure about is the randomness of the helmet colours. And I'd most probably forget those red-white chequers.

For me the Fists are a bit more minimalistic and uniformed. But this is just a nuance in representation and a matter of personal taste.

These minis are really convincing and you definitely make Dorn proud.

Respect brother!

Grats on your army Toschenko,

Those are one of the finest IFs that I saw around ever.

One day when I come back to painting ... I have a huge IF army yet to paint... I surelly will use some of those techinics that you shows so well executed =)

Once again congratulations.

Thanks guys, your words are very appreciated ^_^

@pattison: I chose a less "uniform" look because I tend to get bored very fast when painting marines, they're a bit too plain for my likings. So I went for a realistic look which involved weathering (a funny technique that can be varied very easily from mini to mini) and differently coloured helmets and checkers to differentiate between troops (red), fast attack (blue), elites (purple, as you may see on the sternguards) and heavy support (maybe black, even if I've not yet decided). I know that it may seem odd, and I'm not too fond of the blue helmets either, but generally speaking I think that in the end the fully painted army will look decent. Or at least, I hope it ;)

So, on with the last part of the tutorial, and another finished mini (well, less the base):

Fifth step: after pigment weathering the mini lost a bit of definition. Using a bit more MIG dark wash I enhance again all recesses. Then I start with (some) shadows and highlights (pics first!)

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0041.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0042.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0043.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0044.jpg

- bolter casing is shaded with badab black and highlighted with charadon granite and then charadon + white

- purple checkers with hormagaunt purple + white

- brown parts are base with calthan brown, washed with a calthan brown + black mix, then the same mix + more black is used to give definition only in the most recessed parts. Highlights are made with calthan brown + vomit brown, then a second stage of highlights is carried out adding some more vomit brown in the mix.

- shoulder eagle with astronomican grey, then astronomican grey + white. At the end I make a very selective asurmen blue wash to sharpen the transition between the raised and recessed areas

- purity seals and parchment: base with dheneb stone, wash with gryphonne sepia and highlight with dheneb stone, then with dheneb + white. A final devlan mud wash only in the recesses and you'll be fine. The red parts are simply dark flesh highlighted with blood red.

- eyes with dark angels green, thraka green wash, then scaly green with a fine line of scorpion green and a skull white dot. Remember to give a light coat of gloss varnish to get the "glass" effect.

- gems are dark flesh, lower part with blood red, even lower part with blazing orange, white dot and gloss varnish coat.

- final yellow highlights with sunburst yellow, underlining every scratch on the armou. Try to use small dots instead of solid lines, it gives a better result (at least to me). White parts are higlighted with skull white, using the same method of the yellow ones.

The close-ups are somewhat unforgiving but I may assure you that from a slightly higher distance the paintjob gives the mini a very pleasant look. Not that I want to prove my point but...

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0040.jpg

Well, I hope you like the result and have enjoyed the tutorial... but I'd be even happier if this will help you in some way. Don't hesitate to ask if you have some question, or to give your two cents and move me a critic or two.

Another WIP, continuing the work on sternguards. Usually I tend to do the detailing work on one mini at time, since I like to focus on only one piece when it comes to little details - that means that i usually end up having all pieces at different stages of completion. This is how the second marine looks like at the moment:

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc228/Toschenko/IMG_0049.jpg

I've yet to fix the pigments so it looks to lack a bit of definition, but I will fix it with the next stages.
