Imperial Fists and Tablescapes/Terrain [updated: 6/12/17]

Recommended Posts

greetings, I'm coming from 40k0. Been lurking B&C painting/modelling section for a while and I thought i'd start posting and sharing my work.

here's my start on the Imperial Fists 5th company. This project is looking pretty exciting, I'm looking to really bring these guys to life and develop the Chapter a bit more. hopefully I'll have more to share as I finish some modeling and christen my handy-dandy new airbrush with craploads of yellow. Sorry for the bad pictures, believe or not these were the best ones of the batch...

Just looking to share and fishing for C&C.

Very nice. The battle damage might be a little over the top, as Captain Conrad said. Also the angle of the melta throwing Marine's arm looks a bit unnatural. Kind of reminds me of Rookie of the Year.

You could try a "salt bath," and try bending the arm a bit to give it a more natural position. I saw someone post a guide on how to bathe your models in salt.

Personally I like them. In fact I love them. Battle damage might be getting to the extreme end but they have obviously been in the field for a while.

Every thread where someone has Imperial Fists someone asks how they painted the yellow. This time its going to be me. So I must ask, how did you paint them? I'm looking at painting an army of Lion Warriors and would love to do them this colour and battle damaged.

1) thanks -- battle damage is a matter of taste to be sure, some people like none, some like lots. I'm in the 'lots'category <_< . I figure every time a 9 footish, 500 lbs + weight of gear space marine runs into something, or even bumps something, that's a ding on the armor. When you factor in the constant running into things, diving for cover, scraping against things, etc. that happen in the course of a week of fighting in the life of the Imperium's elite super warriors, painting extreme wear and tear becomes called for imo.

2) I've spent a looonggg time looking for a good yellow recipe that is both easy and gets good results. my method is:

1. prime white

2. paint 1:1ish mix of darksun foundation and white, maybe 1:2. I can't remember the exact mixture, but you a want a terrible bright lemon color.

3. paint 1:3 or 4 mix of darksun foundation and golden yellow, maybe even more yellow in that ratio. I just pour a tad of darksun into a pot of golden yellow. The result is a an off-yellow, sandy color. When applied to the model, the dried result is more yellow than it looks in the pot. you will get excellent coverage with 1-2 thin layers, i promise

then line in with scorched brown, highlight with sunburst and bleached bone. weathering streaks are done with watered down bestial brown.

I'm in the very small amount of damage camp (my ultras always deploy pristine :P ) That being said, the damage itself is excellent! I think in the Helsreach book Grimauldus pretty much had no paint left on his armour by the end of the battle!

Dude, just yes. That yellow is AMAZING. The battle damage is well done even though its not up my alley, but that yellow is great. I think thats the yellow they actually are. A nice deep golden yellow. Bravo and post more when you get around to it.

i actually like the battle dmg, i think it's very well done... doesn't look over the top to me.. however the bases are too plain for them... there are great details on them so they deserve better than those bases...

I see what you mean. do you have anything in mind?

Since it sounds like what you were going for the effect is great, the streaky weathering and small details on the armour really bring them to life.

I think the dull base lets you focus more on the mini, but maybe a cooler hue like a blue or green would contrast it more against your yellow.

Great job.

Take some parts of an old spru and they can be used as girders and some tiny rocks around em as bits of rubble from the collapse of a building, or you could add some static grass here and there... Just something to break up the base some while not taking away from he model. Great yellow. Good luck on the rest of your build. Have you seen the painting guide for the company colors on the Phalanx website? Lists all 10 with SGT markings and command markings. You may want to take a look as a refresher to some of the colors if you want to stick to the fluff scheme.

i don't know anything about the imperial fists, let alone the 5th company. but at the top of my head i'd based them according to their natural surrounding, their home planet, their ship, wherever they are commonly found, for fluff wise if you care much about those kinda things. another idea is because they are weathered/dmg, base them on something that would fit, a sense of belonging. i would completely avoid anything w/ happy green grass or any sort of plant life. simply because it's odd to see a rusted damaged dude standing in the garden of eden, he's out of place. so i would put them in an urban environment or something along that line, with metal parts so you can weathered them to show a sort of continuity. i think it's importance to have the model and the base have something in common. so when you get the sense that he belongs there.

I like your yellow (cos it's a lot like mine ;) ) but I think your black is lost amongst the silver. I would suggest either reducing the amount of battle damage on the black paint, or at least darkening the silver chips with badab black. You'll get more pop for your efforts.

  • 11 months later...

So I've made some progress on the army -- it's been long enough! I changed my yellow recipe and the way I weathered the Marines. I have yet to do basing.

Here's an example. Pictures are pretty bad, from my iPhone. More to come when I find the time ^_^

I love that shade of yellow, it's perfect, mind if I try it out?

by all means! Undercoat White, 3-4 thin layers of golden yellow with an airbrush (a technique that is easy, consistent, and extremely fast if you're batch painting), highlight sunburst yellow, extreme highlight Sunburst-White, scorched brown in the recesses (and used for chips, highlighted with sunburst-white), mud-ish weathering with watered down bestial brown. :)

Any yellow army with lots of wear and tear will always get a thumbs up from me, lol. Looks great, brother, although I perfer the more extreme damage myself. Your freehand is superb, can't wait to see more!
