Custom Chapter: Sons of Redemption?

Gurava

Recommended Posts

Hello, i am new to the Bolter and Chainsword. In the future, you'll hopefully see a lot of conversions and painting from me.

Now i am thinking of making a custom chapter: the Sons of Redemption. The background is of captain Ivac Gurava of the Iron Hands, that became a hero during the Horus Heresy, when he and his company defeated the Chaos Warlord Ka'Vurak of the Thousand Sons on the outpost on Mardus II. where he later built a fortress-monestary and founded the chapter.

I want a dark gothic feel to them, and i am considering the colours dark torquoise and dark red. (Both at once?) I will try to make almost every choice in the codex: Space marines. Vanguard veterans on foot with swords and shields, honour guard with relic blades and bolters and a chapter master of some sort. I want them to have a close relation to the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Any ideas for the Chapter Icon or the chapter in general?

EDIT: Ooops, wrong forum! Can someone please move this?

For chapter icon why not use a broken cog, along the lines of the deathwings broken sword. Easy(ish) to freehand and has an interesting and unique appearance.

For colour i would say most likely go with red. Again, the link would be obvious to the AdMech and it would mean you wouldn't need to keep batches of mixed up colours to paint your guys.

This way you don't necessarily have to go OTT on the bionic conversions unless you want to, possibly using bionics as some form of status symbol. So you could have the chapter master being 90% bionic where as a Vet Sgt might just have a bionic hand or something.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Thank you for the ideas! red would have too little contrast, so adding dark torquoise robes and tabards should do it. And silver trim and dark torquoise shoulder pads.

Well, with that fluff they'll probably be 3rd founding. I like the whole theme to them as well... If you're going to have close relations with the Mechanicus, I would reccomend having some red on the models, maybe making the weapons red? It'll be a visual clue to other colectors, along with the cog symbol you might have as a badge.

Yeah, but the real hard choice is exactly how to paint them. Here are two ideas:

And i put the Icon idea as my avatar! Thank you, Atheos! I like it very much!

I like the blue one just a bit better, then it has to be blue. Should i start as fast as i can or wait for the Grey Knight release for more "Dark Gothic" parts? But that's in a while... What should i do?

Welcome to the B&C Liber Astartes section! I hope that you understand that, by posting here, you're giving leave for some of us here to 'help' you conceptualize your DIY Chapter? I hope you have thick skin, and can take criticism well, because we oh so like to criticize.

First off, it's always a good idea to read the very helpful Liber Astartes Guide. It will save you a lot of heartache in the end, let me tell you.

Secondly I noticed that your Chapter is apparently an Iron Hands descendant. What is your Chapter's take on the Iron Hand's predeliction to excise all sources of weakness possible? Do they do it via bionics, or something else?

Thirdly it seems like you have a Horus Heresy-era hero as a founder. This is a little tricky, as this makes your Chapter at least a 2nd Founding. The thing is the 2nd Founding is pretty much well-documented, and it would raise the hackles of some people here to suddenly say, in essence, "Oh, but we're an UNKNOWN part of the 2nd Founding!" It didn't work too well with the Soul Drinkers, it might not work as well here too.

Those are some of my thoughts for now.

My suggestion would be make him a hero from the 1st Black Crusade and Chapter as part of the 3rd Founding.

2nd Founding is pretty much filled with GW Chapters, and 3rd Founding is 979 years after 2nd ... so unlikely that a hero would survive from Heresy.

Thank you both for the criticism and the ideas! I just read the DIY guide, and it's very useful!

For your first question; They use bionics. I won't make too many bionics on the models, but who says that they can't have the bionics beneath the armour?

For the second question; I'll follow Ecritter's suggestion. I was a bit confused abouth the foundings.

How do they go about redeeming the Imperium?

Marines Malevolent = Cut out the Weakness root and thorn, burn even the barest trace of impurity, scorch and salt the earth if it becomes unclean and I care not for your suffering.

Salamanders = I kick ass. You don't, but that's OK. I'll do the ass kicking for you and in my free time I'll teach you to kick ass.

Nightrawen: Noo! Now i need a new name! Steel Crusaders? Maybe i should take the chapter "Redeemers" and fill them out?

Soddinnutter: Like most of the Imperium do: Purge the unclean! They don't follow the codex completely, though.

I'll not use the normal colours for the specialists, veterans, etc. but make my own. The red robe of redemption is one of the most common status symbols.

Sergeant/Veteran - The red robe of redemption, backpack icon, laurels, crux terminatus (veteran only)

Veteran sergeant - The red robe, back banner, black helmet, Insignium Valorus, laurels on helmet, crux terminatus

Honour guard/Company Champion - Backpack icon, The red robe, Black helmet, laurels, crux terminatus, Insignium Valorus

Captain/Chapter Champion - The red robe, back banner, black helmet, Insignium Valorus, laurels on helmet, the cloak of purity

Chapter Master - The red robe, back banner, black helmet, Insignium Valorus, laurels, the cloak of purity

Librarian - The red robe with the iron halo and inscriptions on it, the horned skull on the shoulder pad

Chaplain - The black robe of cleansing, helmet with skull on the forehead, the rosarius and a skeleton on a black shoulder pad

Apothechary - The red robe with a white Helix, white helmet, helix on the shoulder pad

Tech marine - The red robe with the Mechanicus patterns on it, the Opus Mechanicus (or something) on the shoulder pad

Any ideas about the helmet of the techmarine?

EDIT: The name could be "Sons of Iron"

We have already Sons of Redemption. Just saying.

Just because another user thought of the name first, that doesn't make him the sole owner of that name. Gurava can keep it if he wants.

I knew, someone is going to say that. :teehee:

Of course the UltimateJake is not the sole owner, but the DIY is very delicate matter and some people may not be happy with this. I would not for certain. So I think, it is *polite* to consider other people feelings.

Edit: 24h in the pain glove for me...

Sorry, Nightrawen... but it's UltimateJake. :D

Fair enough. You make a good point.

Also, 24 hours in the pain glove isn't sufficient by the standards of the Ordo Grammaticus.
