Summoners + Truescale Death Watch Marines

Been a while since I last painted anything so I decided to get together all my old AoBR and BfM snap fix marines to see what I could put together.

As my paint supply is currently dwindling I decided to redo my Summoners marines in orange, well that and I like orange.

The Summoners are a third founding chapter and are one of a handful of chapters specifically created with the task of taking out rogue or renegade chapters. I will expand on the background material at some point but for now I'm going to concentrate on painting.

So far I have around just under a company of these guys but for the time being will be focusing on the captain and command squad, three tacticals, a dreadnought and the vindicator.

For the time being here are the wip shots of the captain and vindicator. I'm keeping the paint scheme pretty simple and so decided on using a simple skull for the chapter icon.

Cheers guys. :)

The_son_of_Dorn: The turret is basically just a pintle mounted stormbolter but other weapon options would be nice. :D

tyrannosaurus: Yeah it's pretty easy to paint something like this as long as it's block colours.

Just to explain the technique I'm using for speed painting these guys here is a WIP shot. What I'm doing is basically wet brushing, like dry brushing but with a bit more paint on the brush. The guys on the left have been given one coat over a spray paint black undercoat, the guys on the right have had a second coat. Next I'll be going over the squad with a watered down orange to smooth out the surface and fill in the gaps left by the wet brushing.

This is a seriously quick way of painting marines that are all one colour, once it's complete I'll go over them again with highlights before shading with washes and then weathering after the markings have been added. With any luck both these will be ready for basing by tonight.

Good to see you working on some stuff again, I really really loved your mantis Warriors and these are looking fantastic too, although it seems like you're the kind of guy who should invest in a cheap airbrush just to get all that orange done quickly :D

Cheers guys! ;)

Dark Link: Yeah it's a shame the mantis warriors got ruined but I have stripped them down and am including them in this force so hopefully they will still make it onto a gaming table at some point. At this point I'd love an airbrush. :RTBBB:

Not got as much done on these as I would have liked but progress is progress. I'm a bit limited by my paints at the moment as they are kind of like wall paper paste and all the flesh tones except tallarn flesh have dried up. :eek

Regardless of the hindrance I am improvising with washes and watering everything down so it's not looking too bad.

You can find some pretty decent cheap airbrushes if you look hard enough but I totally understand where you're coming from by having to recycle old marines. The only reason I have an airbrush is because I was bought a beginner's AB for Christmas this year. And yeah, Citadel's pots are rather awful especially the new ones. In fact, les from AwesomePaintJob is convinced that they're made to dry your paints out quickly, which to be honest isn't much of a stretch of the imagination knowing Games Workshop.

Cheers guys. :)

Funny thing is I came across a couple of old pots of paint from something like fifteen years ago the other day and are still as though they were brand new. Some of the paints I bought last year have already dried up and the rest are just a lumpy paste. :D

Bit of an update. Only really just started this next guy but couldn't help but jump straight to the helmet markings to try something out.

I used to love the original plastic marines painted up as LotD and the skull on the face plate was too tempting not to try.

I love the helmet skull idea, and I suppose Citadel weren't so capitalist 15 years ago. I mean, these are the people who started selling their own-brand water pot, for christ's sake. Presumably so they can start selling Citadel-brand water to put in it, at £6 per bottle.

Cheers mate. :(

Bit of an update.

Got some more done on the first five guys for the tactical squad. What I'm currently toying around with is expanding on the skull marking on the Mk VI lid so that other marines have minor variations like laurels or helmet stripes in white. I may even use the tactical squad symbols as a chance to give each marine his own personal heraldry, so each will have a very small variation on the arrow but all be part of the same squad. The way I see marines is that each is a heroic individual in their own right so minor variations here and there will go a little way to getting this across but still remain uniform as a squad.

The next two guys will be the sergeant on the left and a marine on the right. I've cut the arms from the AoBR sergeant replacing them with regular tactical marine arms. To give him a bit more individuality I've also given him a second ed plastic bolter and added a white stripe.

The sergeant will have a red lid with a white stripe denoting him a veteran sergeant as per the codex. If I ever get around to adding some stern guard I will be using white lids which should look really nice.

To speed things up I've also mixed up three shades of orange in pots, undercoat, basecoat and highlight so that I can get a consistent colour throughout.

Looks great, but the red helmet looks way too... purple for my tastes. I'm not sure whether it's the photo or whatever, but in my opinion red helmets and orange armour are not colour which are made to go together. I'd suggest trying something different for the sergeant's helmet colour.

Cheers guys! :tu:

Dark Link: Yeah it does look a little purple in that picture but hopefully it looks less so in the one below. I did think about doing them a different colour say like white but ultimately wanted to get that codex sort of look so had to go with the red.

Bit of an update.

Got a bit more done on the sergeant. Still a little messy but I'll clean him up once the bulk of the squad is done.
