Ramell's Ultramarines

Ramell

Recommended Posts

So, I've recently started a new Ultramarines army (back in December), and I've now made a blog to show off the models, my progress, to ramble on about everything, and to (hopefully) give me enough motivation to finish the models at a rate that is not insanely slow.

I've always liked Ultramarines, since before I started 40k in fact. I've collected the boys from Macragge on and off for the last six years, mostly off and never more than a few models before I quit them. In November, I decided I couldn't take any more temptation (from the Ultramarines movie, the fantastic Ultramarines here on the B&C, ect), and started this army. Didn't get going until the start of December, though. But I did get some things planned:

I wanted a personalised army, with each model being an unique, named Marine. Dark blue armour, dark red trim and weapon casings, bright silvery gold, and green eyes so that all models have the same eye colour, and the sergeants do not have red eyes with red helmets.

All Power Armoured squads without Jump Packs or bikes will have a transport. This will be a Rhino, with the roof hatches left unglued, so I can easily switch it to a Razorback, with no exceptions.

With these things in mind, I experimented a bit on some spare parts and quickly came up with a good way to paint the different colours. I also bougth some Forge World parts (Ultramarines Rhino Doors set, Ultramarines icons, Ultramarines Brass Etch, Mk V Armour, Umbra-Pattern Bolters, Character conversion set) to add some character and differences to the models.

I then got started on the first Tactical Marine, and the "Rhinoback" for the first squad, sometime around the fifth or sixth of December. I'm a 'little' slow at making model, partially because I'm a perfectionist and require everything to be just right, and partially because I've got various video games to distract me (primarily WoW). But I got some progress done, and by the week between Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, I finished the Tactical Marine (did the very last things on the 31st, around seven in the evening).

I think that's enough of my ramblings for now. It's time for pictures:

Janus Castor, Combat Squad leader, First Squad (Tactical) of the Third Company:

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Third%20Company/Squad%20Aurelius/JanusCastor03.jpg

There's a few things that didn't come out perfectly, but I'm extremely satisfied. Looks just as I envisioned him (though the arms and Bolter are slightly too far up). I'm especially happy with the freehand Ultramarines symbol, even more so with it being my first real freehand.

Then there's the inner wall from the Rhino, which I've named Valus. I've finished the green screens, the wax seal, and the parchment. The rest is still in various stages of PIP.

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/ValusInnerWallWIP01.jpg

And to finish this post off, a WIP shot of various parts.

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/WIP0104-01-11.jpg

In the foreground, the ramming spike thing, which I've magnetised (with matching magnets in the Rhino's front). It's getting some green stuff, but it's not a top priority, being an accessory and all.

Then there's the Forge World Ultramarines door (for the left side), also magnetised. It wasn't really warped, but it's too thin and uneven on the back so I'm doing some green stuff work there too. I've gotten further since the picture was taken (on the 4th).

There's also the legs and torso of the next Tactical Marine I'm working on. The torso has since been finished, and glued on. The base has gotten sand, and I've just undercoated the base-legs-torso assembly a short while ago.

In the background there's the Rhino's Storm Bolter and cupola. The Storm Bolter itself is done, but it's base is still PIP, as is the entire cupola. I'm pausing those until I've finished the Rhino itself.

I have also undercoated the inner side of the Rhino's floor, roof and left side.

I also apologise for the pictures. They could've been much better. The lightning was poor, and during the short part of the day that there's proper sunlight, I'm in school. Come spring, I should be able to get some properly lighted pictures.

That's all for now. Comments and constructive critisism is very welcome.

Ps. If you are going to comment negatively on me collecting Ultramarines, please, don't. It's your opinion, which I am just fine with. But please don't bring it to me.

Thanks guys.

I'll probably have some post-worthy progress tomorrow or on Sunday. Depends on how much I want to sleep, and how much I'm going to play video games...

I forgot to mention this in the first post. I signed up for the Librarium Painting Challenge with four Tactical Marines (the one I'm currently working on included). Hopefully that'll give me motivation to finish those before the end of March.

Now I'll go get some painting done.

Nice job :)

I really like that red on the shoulders and bolter, what colour did you use?

Also, good luck in the painting challenge :D

Yours in Honour and Faith

Chaplain Hiltraud

Thanks. :)

The red is Scab Red with a layer or two of Baal Red painted on it (after highlight). Not washed, but used like a thin paint. Highlights are Scab Red mixed with varous amounts of Solar Macharius Orange.

And I've got a small update. I'm about halfway done with the base, and have started on the base layers on the blue, gold and soft armour, as well as the grey on the Rhino's interior. But that's all for today, I'm off to bed (3 AM here).

An evening update!

I planned to post an update yesterday evening. Never got around to it. But now I've made progress since that, so there's more to post.

I finished the roof and floor of the Rhinoback's interior Saturday, varnished it Sunday. Otherwise, I did not get much done Saturday, because TV Tropes sucked me in and didn't want to let me go...

Sunday, I just continued with the Tactical Marine and the wall and left side of the interior of the Rhinoback. I finished and varnished the left-side interior today.

I also decided to paint all the screens green, instead of some being red.

As for the Tactical Marine, the base is close to done (just grass and some cleanup), the blue just needs highlighting, the soft armour is done, though the soles and chest eagle still need work. I think I'll finish the base-legs-torso assembly tomorrow.

Anyways, pictures:

Tactical Marine:

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/LectusSeverianWIP0210-01-11.jpg

I've decided to name him Lectus Severian. He's the youngest and most agressive member of the squad, and he'll be charging along, throwing a grenade once he's complete.

Rhinoback interior:

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/ValusInteriorWIP0110-01-11.jpg

I decided to paint the seats red, to add some colour.

Apologies for the pictures, poor lighting. And I'm a lazy arse so I didn't try to get better ones. Sorry.

That's all for now, I think.

  • 4 weeks later...

Long time no see, eh.

I haven't had much will to paint lately. Over the last three weeks plus I haven't even finished the second Tactical Marine (though I'm close).

This screwed up my three-weeks-per-model-max plan I had for my LPC vow. I just have to speed up the rest, though.

Anyways, I just need to paint a few things here and there on the head, backpack, and a few other places, glue the aforementioned parts together, and put the final finishing touches on. Will probably be tonight (though I might not varnish until tomorrow).

I've taken a picture in my newly made 'photobox' (a cardboard box with a folded piece of A4 paper in it...), with all parts of Severian alongside Castor.

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/LectusSeverianWIP0302-02-11.jpg

I'm slowing down on the Rhino, I don't want to finish it before most of the squad is done. I'd prefer to finish it roughly at the same time, or just after, the Veteran Sergeant (last Marine of the squad I'll make).

I am going to buy a GW Spray Gun today or tomorrow though, when I have the money. Since I'm buying it from the UK (Giftsforgeeks.com, to save money), it'll take a few days to get here.

It'll be for basecoats on vehicles and terrain, nothing else. It's not as good as the fancy airbrushes, but it should be suitable for my needs.

I'll also be buying a Battlefoam P.A.C.K. 216 plus foam frames for troops (72) and tools (already have paints foam). I'll then be able to properly bring my models and painting gear to school. Might speed up painting a bit.

I think that's all for now.

Comments, constructive critisism, ect is welcome.

Thanks. :D

Undercoat is Skull White spray (GW).

I basecoat the blue with Regal Blue, a few thin layers until it covers completely.

Then I paint slightly thinned Chaos Black into the recesses in and between armour plates, cleaning up with Regal Blue afterwards.

Then I paint on two-three (until it's right) layers of Asurmen Blue, treating it like regular (if thin) paint.

Regular highlights, which goes on all edges, are a mix of Regal Blue, Mordian Blue and Enchanted Blue (2:2:1 parts, in that order).

Fine highlight (on higher/exposed edges, corners and such) is equal amounts of Regal Blue, Mordian Blue, Enchanted Blue and Fortress Grey.

The finest highlights (on top corners) are like the fine highlights, but with two parts Fortress Grey to one part of the others.

After the highlights, I clean up after them (making them thinner) with Regal Blue and then Asurmen Blue.

I've gotten a little further with Severian. I've glued the backpack to the body, finished the gold, gotten a good bit further on the metals, almost completed the Bolter lens, and have done a number of other small bits. The head is almost done.

I expect to finish him tomorrow evening, including varnish.

Now I'm off to bed. Got to get up early to go to school tomorrow. :D

Overall, I'm satisfied with him. There's a few things I'd to have fixed, but they're small. The paint on the Ultramarines and Tactical symbols is a little thick, and they're a little wonky around the edges. The name on the plaque on the right shoulder pad could've been a little better, particularily the second 'e' (the letters are tiny though, so I didn't want to try again).

The squad's now two tenth finished (not counting the Rhinoback), and my LPC vow is one fourth finished.

As usual, comments and constructive critisism is more than welcome.

  • 1 month later...

It's been too long since I updated this thread. I've finished a whole marine, and I'm about halfway with two more.

It's a bit late now, and I have school tomorrow, so I'll make it quick.

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/LPC2011WIP02.jpg

Those are the marines I'm making for the LPC. I've posted Severian, on the far left, already. The other finished marine is Solin Velanto. Next is brother Sicar (Mk VI legs), the squad Special Weapon operator. He will have a flamer. The last is brother Varus. He has Mk V legs, but is otherwise just another Battle-Brother. I've undercoated the remaining parts for the last two, so they're ready to paint. When these four are all finished, which will probably be on Monday or Tuesday, I'll have finished my LPC vow.

I'll have to post more pictures of brother Velanto, but it'll probably not happen until Sicar and Varus are finished as well.

As usual, C&C is welcome.

I like these....ultra...smurfs....you've made them look more sadistic and cold instead of the "hi I'm a homo in French blue and gold" (no offense ment btw you ultra players)

Paint the fists red and they'll be perfect  lol

Just a quick little update of my weekend progress.

Sicar and Varus as they are at the moment. Both have their arms and weapon attached, though these parts are not completely finished. I expect to finish the arms, weapons and backpacks, and start on the shoulder pads and heads tomorrow.

Very nice, i like the dark look you've given them. They look alot like Crimson fists.

Quick question, when you mount the heads to paint them seperately, what do you use to keep them on the paper clip?

I've tried using blue-tac inside a hole ive drilled into the head, but its a little wobbly. Not sure about gluing it incase it doesn't come off...

Thanks.

The 'paper clips' are actually broken drill bits from when I've dropped my drill onto the floor. The hole is only ever so slightly larger than the drill bit, so the parts stay snugly on.

The drill bits are 1mm in diameter, so you could look for paperclips or brass rod or such in that size. I've never seen a paperclip in that size though (maybe a .90mm one, but not larger than that).

I've finished the last two marines, Sicar and Varus, for my LPC vow.

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Third%20Company/Squad%20Aurelius/LPC2011Finished.jpg

I'm a little hurried right at the moment, so I'll have more picturs up Saturday or Sunday.

C&C welcome as usual.

So, it's been too long since I posted. I needed a break from 40k, and I kinda forgot...

Anyway, I've done a bit of work in the last two weeks and I took a bunch of pictures yesterday.

To start with, Rhinoback Valus' interior is finished, and I've glued the hull together. I still need to fill in gaps with Green Stuff, and attach things such as headlights and Smoke Launchers, but it's well on its way.

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/ValusInnerWallWIP02.jpg

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/ValusInteriorWIP0217-04-11.jpg

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/ValusInteriorWIP0317-04-11.jpg

And glued, dryfitted and Blu-Tacked in Rhino and Razorback configurations:

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/ValusWIP01.jpg

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/ValusWIP02.jpg

And then there's something else I'm working on, Epistolary Tiberius:

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Work%20In%20Progress/EpistolaryTiberiusWIP01.jpg

Currently, he is just a Blu-Tacked mockup.

He's just about all-plastic, except for two pieces of FW Brass Etch and a brass rod in his left wrist. Most of the parts are from the new Grey Knights set and the SM Commander set.

And of course, there's Squad Aurelius. Currently half completed (not counting Valus).

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Third%20Company/Squad%20Aurelius/SquadAurelius01.jpg

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Third%20Company/Squad%20Aurelius/SolinVelanto01.jpg

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Third%20Company/Squad%20Aurelius/Sicar01.jpg

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu321/Ramell_of_Cadia/Ultramarines/Third%20Company/Squad%20Aurelius/Varus06.jpg

I don't want to post too many pictures, so here's a link to my Photobucket gallery.

There's currently a school holiday in Denmark, which lasts this week, so I expect to get more work done than usual on weekdays.

C&C welcome as usual.
