I have a general purpose gaming blog (link at the bottom) and I don't really like to repeat my work like this, but I figure I can use this space as a Blood Angels specific zone. We'll see how it pans out. My LPC vow is for a Sanguinary Guard unit and an Assault Squad, which is a smaller sub-set of an update to my Blood Angels army. I've been away from 40k for a few years, since 3rd edition, so some retooling is in order. As with the SG wings, I plan to leave the jump packs off the squad for easier painting. Normally I assemble everything, but I'm trying a new approach. I wanted to finish them so I could potentially prime them today, but then I realized I needed to base them first, so that plan got put on hold. I took a look through the 40k basing kit I got for Christmas and found all sorts of nifty bits, so it should be more interesting than usual basing the squad. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/reverend_bob/LPC%202011/02RASresized.jpg As with the Sanguinary Guard, I'm keeping the jump packs off for ease of painting. Weather has been cold for a while and looks to continue for the rest of the week. They're even calling for snow tomorrow, so priming might be an issue. Demitra Posted January 11, 2011 Author Share Posted January 11, 2011 I'm sure there are lots of folks out there who have returned to the hobby after a time away, but it is nice to bump virtual elbows with them from time to time. Do you see mold lines that I missed? I'm normally thorough about cleaning my minis, though something could have slipped through the cracks in a large, for me anyway, building session like I had yesterday. There are some gaps on a jump pack or two that I'll greenstuff soonish, and I don't really have the patience to do things like clean individual chainsword teeth, but those aside everything should be ready for priming. In progress news, I based both squads this morning. I wanted to use some of the resin bits, but they all had bits of flash/sprue on the bottom and I'm hesitant to do any cutting or scraping of resin, though I suppose I'll have to get over that. Snow is still in the forecast for tomorrow, though it should wait until the afternoon, and the rest of the week features below-freezing temperatures, so I'm not sure when I'll get the squads primed. I may try to sneak some in before the snow tomorrow, but I haven't tried priming in very cold conditions yet and I'm not sure I want to try it out one a shiny new squad. To be honest, its been pretty cold here in Texas (relatively speaking, of course. :) ), and I primed my Dante and assault chaplain models, along with some accessories and bitz, with no adverse affects. Got them finished literally just before it started to rain. I don't know what 'very cold' is for you, but it was around mid 50's to low 60's when I primed them. Since this is my first time using a new primer, I'm not sure how I'm going to paint these guys, so that marine will continue in his testing role. I don't plan to spend too long on it and may not even paint the whole thing, just enough to get an idea of how I want to proceed. My big sticking point now is the shoulders, in particular the shading on the shoulders. I think I may have left too much showing, but it could be excess hand-wringing. Hence, I'm soliciting opinions. It's nice from a distance when you're looking at the army as a whole. So I think you're fine so far. Loving the models too, although I AM jealous of the paints. I had originally intended to work on the squads in groups of five, but I decided to finish off the three I've been working on before starting in on more. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/reverend_bob/LPC%202011/027group.jpg Did the white/bone areas as well as washing and re-base coating the armor. I've come up against two concerns though. First is purity seals, specifically the "wax" attaching bit. I'm painting them red and they're blending in with the armor. I really should have seen this one coming, but it surprised me anyway. I'm considering giving them another wash to make them darker, but I thought I'd solicit opinions. I'm not too keen on painting them some other, not-red color, but if anyone has ideas/examples of different colors I'd entertain them. Second is Xs on Death Company bits, like the shoulder below. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/reverend_bob/LPC%202011/030.jpg I was going to ignore them, no special shading or highlighting, with the hopes that they'd more or less blend in with the rest of the armor. This shoulder in particular is really sticking out though. Obviously it's too late to greenstuff it out of existence, and that'd be too much even if I were still at that stage. Didn't get the results I was after though. I'm considering trying a green wash, as I hear green somehow shades red very well. If that doesn't work, I may try a different color entirely. Brother-Captain Lucius over in this thread is doing them in green and it looks nice. Plus it would tie in with the company color for the 5th and 8th, which is where I'm drawing my squads from. Despite my desire to keep the purity seals red, I went with green and really like the results. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/reverend_bob/LPC%202011/039morepurity.jpg They pop now, a vast improvement over having them blend in with the rest of the armor. I did company markings too, freehand (poorly) on the flat pads and painting the sculpted pad as usual. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/reverend_bob/LPC%202011/038sculptedshoulder.jpg I'm on the fence about highlighting the armor. I think it looks good as-is and don't want to make it too orange, but I don't want to leave 90% of the model unhighlighted, especially considering the amount of work I've already put in on these guys.
