LPC 2011 Progress Thread

Hi All,

This thread is for my 2011 Painting Vow.

I have pledged to paint up a Captain, his Command Squad, and a Chaplain by 31 March. (This may not sound like much, but I'm an incredibly slow painter.)

The Captain will be armed with a Relic Blade and a Combi-melta

The Command Squad will have a Company Champion, a Powerfist user, a Company Standard bearer, a pistol-and-Chainsword Veteran, and an Apothecary.

The Chaplain will have a Jump Pack.

The bits are currently on order. (I'm using the molded Imperial/Crimson Fists shoulderpads for these. I'm interested to see how they'll turn out.)

I'm doing Imperial Fists, current color scheme, fifth company. (Black shoulder pad trims)

Here are some examples of my color scheme so far.

The Devastator seargeant has a lazy eye, which is perfect for the guy overseeing the high-powered weaponry. The Flamer-wielding trooper looks ever so slightly nuts, which I think is pretty appropriate too. I blame degradation of the Gene-seed.

This is also my first attempt at macro photography...wow, my figs look terrible close-up.

Lol,

don't worry, I was pretty scared when I looked at my first photos close up too.

If I may offer C&C? I know you're on a tight schedule and I myself am still contemplating if I want to try and add myself to the LPC as I'm a REALLY slow painter. BUT! I mean they're looking pretty good, I know faces are hard to do (I love doing the unhelmeted heads) Esp with the low detail around the eye area, but if you have space wolf bits/friends that play wolves, their heads are alot more detailed and they are much more clear as to where the eyes actually go. I find them fun to adapt too as there are so many choices and their simple to convert into not so space wolf looking heads, but with big angry faces on them .

Also the bases, simple, but I think they just need something else to help bring them out, maybe like painting lines on them like they're on the road? Or maybe just another bigger chunks put down? If you have a basing kit there should be some bigger rocks/concrete slabs that you can put on first then cover the base willy nilly?

I dunno it's up to you, but well done so far!

Hmm...Space Wolf heads you say. I'll definitely take a look at them.

You're right about the bases. I'm not super happy with them, but I also don't want to make them too complex. I usually have officers/HQ units on fancy bases, and leave the rank and file be. But I do have a few snarls of barbed wire, skulls, bits of charred timber, etc. to lay down to bring out the 'urban warzone' thing.

I've put the pieces together and have them primed. I use white automotive primer because I find it has a very fine particle size and good tooth.

The backpacks and things are just set on there, not glued-on. I do final assembly after painting.

A Deathwatch Vet, my Captain, and the Standard Bearer (who is kneeling and reverently looking up at the banner.)

My Powerfist trooper, my Apothecary (who I think looks better with a bare head) and Company Champion

Finally, the Chaplain

I've got my Chaplain mostly done. It was nice to not have to paint a yellow Marine for a change.

I got rid of his pistol arm and added a pointing arm. I think it gives him more of a "Go smite those guys in the name of Dorn" feel.

I have finished my Apothecary, Chaplain and, most importantly, Captain Khrusaor of the V Company! :pinch:

Very nicely done. I like the face on the apothecary. The banner and heraldry of your captain is fantastic too, including the free-hand at the bottom of the cloak.

My only criticism...drill out your gun barrels :)

Thanks. I know I should do the guns properly. I've never gotten around to it. (What tool works best for that? A pin-vise?)

I'm particularly pleased with how the Captain's banner and cape came out. (I like doing the free-hand stuff.) When it was just a flat black cape it was way too much real-estate to not have some trim.

a small Drill ( the one you would use to pin something)

or a very pointy modeling knife, just spin it in the plastic to make a small hole as you don't need to drill a real cannon for your bolter it's generally enough ;)

Nice Captain, my only comment, I would have prefert the golden part of the sword to be silver as gold blend in with yellow.

Good job!

My vow is complete.

Here are some pics of the pieces I had left to complete. (Deathwatch Marine, Company Champion, Standard Bearer.)

i love the yellows; bright and vibrant.

the barrels will look better drilled (i keep forgetting to do mine)

and the apothicary looks intense, i look at him and hear "for god's sake Jim!"

and i love the champions power sword, but the knife on the deathwatch vet seems out of place

Thanks.

White primer, GW Golden Yellow basecoat, line with GW Chestnut Ink, broad highlights with GW Sunshine Yellow, sharp highlights with Vallejo Light Yellow.

Initially, I wanted to make the Apothecary kneeling, as if kneeling over a wounded Marine to give him the Emperor's Peace. Unfortunately, the Apothecary torso didn't really fit well with the kneeling legs. (I still found a good use for the kneeling legs, though. :) )

I'm going to be picking up a pin vice so I can drill out my gun barrels. The more I look at it, the more I realize it needs to be done so desperately.

The combat knife on the Deathwatch guy is a little bit of an inside joke. He's the over-equipped Marine. Bolter, grenades, pouches, pistol, knife, Chainsword (after that there's no more room). He was dropped alone on an Ork-infested world with his gear and a pre-paid phone and told not to call home until the world was cleared of greenskins.

Heresy! there is always room for more guns! would need a flamer also (combi flamer?) to dispose of ork bodies (a cigar and gas cannister would work also - and look cool)

they do look awesome though - but being imperial fists, would expect maybe a heavy weapon?

I thought long and hard about adding a Heavy Bolter (which, to me, feels the most 'Imperial Fist' of the heavies) but since I'm using this unit as an assault unit and they do have a Razorback with a Heavy Bolter on it, I figured I was OK.
