ShinyRhino's LPC 2011 progress thread

This year my vow is for a Land Raider Crusader, a unit of five Terminators, and a TDA Chaplain. Tall order for me, considering my snail's pace of painting and nitpicky painting process. We'll see how I do. I haven't failed an LPC yet, so let's get to cracking!

First up will be the LRC, which is a refurb job of an old Templar tank:

As you can see, I stripped it down to bare bones. I had to do some bitz trading to get all the parts I needed. New side doors, new assault ramp top, and a complete teardown of the sponsons. This bad boy is solold, it has the metal Hurricanes, Assault Cannon, and multimelta. Metal frag launchers, too.

There's something very satisfying about moving this big, metal behemoth around on my desk, while making "rumble, rumble, VROOOM" noises.

I won't be magnetizing anything on this tank, as the sheer weightof the sponsons would require some massive magnets. I have three Raiders in total, and two of them are refurb jobs like this. The other refurb is also an LRC, and the NIB version will actually be magnetized to be fully swappable between Redeemer, Crusader, and Phobos. But, those aren't part of the LPC, so I'll leave it at that.

Terminator Squad is lined out to be a sergeant, three standard Terminators, and one armed with an Assault Cannon. I like assault cannons a lot of late, so I'm going that route instead of the CML or heavy flamer.

TDA Chaplain will be the bog-standard GW model. it's a great model with a lot of character, and one I've been wanting to paint up for quite some time.

Small progress last night.

I spent the majority of the evening completing the paint on this Land Raider's partner, but was able to spare a few minutes after sealing the other to work on this one.

Here's a quick inventory of the sponson parts, and the multimelta gunner:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/IMG_0816.jpg

Everything is present, except the actual sponson plates. Those are still on the LRC/LRR sprue I bought from GW for this project. You know what they look like :D.

I filed all the mould lines on these metal parts, and tonight during the Bruins game intermissions, I'll drill the barrels of the multimelta and the Hurricane bolters. Then, assembly of the sponsons. It's a brutal task that takes a TON of patience. Lots of holding with Loctite Impact superglue. I don't use accelerants or kickers for my superglue, as I've read that it makes the bond brittle, and more prone to breakage post-cure. Pure patience.

After the filing, I broke out the Brown Stuff and did some gap filling.

In the first picture of the chassis, you might have spotted the HUGE gap between the plates of the left side. Looks like the prior owner used a tad too much glue, and no clamps when assembling, resulting in a millimeter-wide gap in the plates. I learned my lesson from the partner Crusader, and needed to fill those in. Here's the result:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/IMG_0904.jpg

As you can see, the fill is VERY rough. I just mixed up the Brown Stuff, and crammed it over the gaps, leaving up to a half-millimeter extra in some spots. This is because I plan to file and sand the surface down as soon as the putty has cured.

I used Brown Stuff instead of Green Stuff because Brown cures rock hard. Green is always a little soft, even after curing, and doesn't take sanding as well. I'musing my lunch break today to head over to Michael's to pick up some Testor's Fine Grit sandpaper. I'll do the initial work with a file, and then transition to the sandpaper for a smooth, natural look. It'll be worth the effort.

More LPC progress!

I filed all the mould lines from all of the sponson and gunner parts, and then assembled them:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/IMG_0906.jpg

I've actually primed and started on the gunner, the blank hatch, and one of the sponson optics, as well, just no pics thus far. Hard to photograph a fig that's black-primed and painted in deep blue, :P.

I then sat down and filed and sanded the Brown Stuff over the gaps I'd filled:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/IMG_0907.jpg

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/IMG_0908.jpg

it came out very smooth after filing and then several passes with various fine-grit sandpapers (from Testors). There might be a very slight lump after priming, but I won't know til I get the primer airbrushed on. Looks miles better than the huge gap, that's for sure!

I also had previously completed the assault cannon turret when painting parts for the previous Land Raider:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/IMG_0909.jpg

Simple enough. it had taken some clever reconstruction to reassemble, since the nubs you'd normally glue the metal assault cannons to were broken off, and the top plate was clogged with glue. Got it all back together, though. It can't move up and down, but fits loosely enough in the turret ring to pan left and right.

I've made a bit of progress!

The sponsons for my Crusader are now 100% complete, sealed, and assembled:

I've also primed and shadecoated the main body of the Crusader with my airbrush:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/lrbasecoat.jpg

I've done the same to my squad of Terminators. Here's one member of the squad in primer coat, and then again in shadecoat:

I've been furiously hammering away at my Land Raider Crusader this week. Winning the Best Army award at the Battle for the Burbs really put some nitro in my painting gas tank.

Here's some crappy WIP shots:

The Crusader with its midtone applied:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/IMG_1096.jpg

And again with its final coat of blue:

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z43/goalie20/Warhammer%2040K/LPC%202011/IMG_1097.jpg

The daylight bulb of my Ottlite really makes the transition hard to see.

I have a few more WIP shots stored on my camera that I have to upload. The tank is currently 99% done. I just have to finish the parchments of its purity seals, hit it with some Dullcote, and then add freehand. I filled a lot of the larger spaces on the tank with seals and decoration, so no huge pieces of freehand for this one. Probably just a name, and a couple chapter icons to start out. It'll earn honors as I play with it.

I'm thinking of naming him "CRIUS". One of the Titan sons of Uranus, typically associated with Aries the Ram. It feels like a fitting name, since an LRC is largly used as a ram on the battle field ^_^

Nice work so far, I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Funny, I never thought of using bottle caps... :kickself:

Yeah, bottlecaps work great, and are free with every tasty beverage! I use standard 20oz tops for PA models, and the Gatorade/Vitamin Water for Terminators.

Finished this bad boy up very late on Friday night. I wanted him complete for the tournament I wrote about in my last entry.

Here are the remainder of the WIP shots:

Edge highlighting:

Metallics complete:

100% complete:

My motor pool now contains three Rhino chassis, and two Land Raider Crusaders. Let's roll over some squishies!

Next up is the Terminator squad, and then TDA Chaplain. Termies are coming along nicely, and the Chaplain is now assembled. He makes me nervous, as I've never painted black armor before.

Looks great... and the brown stuff in the gaps probably saved it. Not sure if you confirmed it, but was there any lumps after the primer went on?

Messanger

No "lump", but a very slight crease line at the edge of one of the panels where the Brown Stuff was near a rivet, and I just couldn't get that area smooth without shaving off the rivet. In hindsight, I probably should have shaved off said rivet, and simply put it back on with a small ball of Brown Stuff after I had the area smooth. Lesson learned!

I really like the effect the Brown Stuff filling had, and am thinking of doing this for all of my vehicles in the future.
