AG's Dark Angels

ancient god

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

some of you might know me from the Blood Angels forum where I usually post. I thought I'd share a couple of DA models I've been painting.

I apologise for the picture quality, I'll try and take better ones tomorrow at my LGS and post those.

Here's the Dreadnought I've done, Brother Laertes:

The sarcophagus:

And the plasma cannon, kitbashed from the regular lascannon arm and the Venerable Dread's plasma cannon:

And here's the first half of the Tactical squad I am working on. Just five bog standard bolter gunners done so far:

A couple of closer shots:

I used the decals that come with the box and added a couple of freehand markings like the crossed swords and company markings to round them off.

Also note the absence of red bolter casings and bone-white chest ornaments; I studied the pictures in the current and Angels of Death codices for a couple of days before I started painting to make up my mind on how to go about painting my models. Page 58/59 in the current codex show diagrams of how to paint your DA with chrome chest eagles and black casings and I much prefer that look. I still get a lot of red on the models through the squad markings and the company badge which I chose for its colour. I plan to use the bone white on any ornaments the marines' weapons might have to keep that in the scheme.

The second half of the Tactical squad is built and sprayed, so I'll start painting them tomorrow or in the weekend. I've so far painted the models one by one and each marine took me about three hours, primer to finish. The dreadnought took me roughly eight hours and thus went much faster than my BA dreads. I blame the red.

Hope you like them and I'd love some feedback from you guys! Especially your thought on how you think this alternative detail scheme works compared with GW's red-and-bone.

So, more pictures of these models tomorrow night and hopefully some progress by next week!

Cheers

man your models are so clean!! I like the battle damage on the dread. Its a very natural highlight on the most "used" edges. I'm going to have to steal that. Can you give us a brief discription of how to go about it?

AG, awesome models! Is there anything you specifically do for the battle damage? It looks great.

What colors did you use to do the stone icons on the Dreadnought, base, shadow color, highlight color, and the colors you used to make the cracks in the icons?

Knowing your blood angels AG I knew I woulndt be dissapointed with your work!

Lovely clean work, clear tones and themes, sexy detailing and uber real looking battle damage!

Particularly impressed with the optics work too!

Also the colours style you've chosen. I like how you make very considered choices as to the theme of your squads. It reminds me of myself only better -_- And on the style, brings back a lot of nostalgia for me personally when this is how all dark angels were painted.

Thanks for sharing!

Excellent - very crisp and clean. The red spot colours work well without being overpowering and the highlighting and shading is subtle. I would have painted some of the details on the special DA shoulder pad to make them stand out a bit more, but that is personal preference on my part and your approach is perfectly reasonable!

I look forward to seeing more photos!

Here's how I do it:

Finish the base colour off (DA Green in this case) with black shading and a single sharp highlight.

Then apply dark brown chipping with a piece of blister foam. I used VMC German Camo Black Brown, but I'd try mixing in some black next time to make it stand out a little better.

Repeat the sponging, but with Chainmail and keep it much lighter than with the brown. Stick to places where there's a lot of brown already.

Use a detail brush and carefully apply Chainmail scratches to flat surfaces, and simply highlight random edges to make them look worn. Use a small drybrush to apply some chainmail to more heavily worn spots; I did this eg. on some armour edges and the back of the exhaust casing.

Finish it off with a light drybrush on the shins and feet using your basing colour of choice.

So it's pretty simple as you really only need two additional paints, the metal and the brown. Hope this helps!

What colors did you use to do the stone icons on the Dreadnought, base, shadow color, highlight color, and the colors you used to make the cracks in the icons?

I used VMC Dark Grey as a base and gave it a slightly thinned wash of Badab Black. I then used VMC Ivory mixed into the grey to build up the highlights. The cracks are VMC German Grey and the top highlights are pure, thinned Ivory.

I gave some parts a super thin glaze with Scorched Brown after all that was done.

That picture qualitiy is so horrid. Shame on you. Really (or in plain english: why do you apologize for picture qualitiy? Fishing for compliments? That's silly, you should stop it).

It's mainly the models I'm looking for feedback on and I apologize because I feel I should. ^_^ It's because I personally think that the picture quality is sub par, and when I look at other people's models, I appreciate it when they're well-presented. So I'll stop once I only post nice and well-lit pictures with neutral backgrounds. ;)

Oh, and why do I post these pictures then? Because I'm an impatient squig!

Thanks for the feedback guys, all of it. :)

Fantastic DA you have there mate, the alternate scheme is absolutely DA to me, I dislike red gun casings too!

One question regarding the pics: Does the green higlight look like this to the naked eye? Its the only thing that bothers me, it looks more like weathering than highlight... You may want to try to blend the two greens a bit, especially on the dread, that has wider plain surfaces than the troopers.

On the bot it does look like that, yes. I skipped the Snot Green and used the highlight to apply some chipping too. I agree it's a little harsh, I'm not 100% decided whether or not I am going to change the recipe up for the next vehicle.

On the marines, I like how it looks. I only used the lighter mix on the extreme edges, the main highlight here is Snot Green.

I didn't mean to be harsh - I'm just envious you can just take quick pictures at home and have them look that well. I guess it's a matter of camera, too, but mine always come out grainy and not really presentable. On the other hand, I am just as envious of your painting skill, but then you don't call these miniatures bad quality painting, either.

Are we going to see more DA from you in the near future?

I'm currently using my girlfriend's camera as I sold off my old one more than a year ago and haven't gotten around to buying a new one yet. So I feel your pain, at least every time I have to use my phone to take pics.

I hope to have more DA models to show some time soon. :P Got a squad of Deathwing, a company master and the rest of the Tactical squad built.

Great models especially the Dread ! I think those are one of the best DA paint jobs I've seen. I've been viewing different techniques to paint my GreenWing for a long time ( hmm 3-4 years...). Have 2 squads painted completely different, but Your style suits me the best. Could you explain how you did the marines, especially the highlights ? First i thought it was Snot Green, but I'm not too sure bout that, its not that sharp. Would really appreciate it :P

Buyback, it's Snot Green on the edges and Snot Green mixed with VMC Ivory for the final highlight.

So, better pictures! I think they show the models much clearer, especially the shading on the infantry.

EPK, the verdigris is really simple. Paint the whole thing Brazen Brass. Apply heavily thinned Jade Green onto the brass; focus on the lower and deeper parts. Reapply the brass in thin layers where the jade is too strong and highlight it using 1:1 Brazen Brass and Chainmail and that's it. :P

Stunning work there ancient god. The Dread in particular is excellent. Armour damage very well done (didn't fancy extending it onto the marines?), I also like the way you've scuffed the icons to match. Ooooo I've just noticed the BA Dread and marine's freehand iconography – top marks to you sir.

I want to make special mention of the bases. The colouring is brillliant and complements your models really well.

Cheers

Isiah, I decided not to weather my infantry when I took up my Blood Angels again in Feb/March 2010, and I've stuck to that with my DA. I've weathered Marines and Guard and lots of other models and I feel I can manage it on that scale too, but I ended up preferring my infantry clean. I think that the infantry are really tiny once you put them on the table or in the cabinet and rely heavily on clean lines and strong tones to make them pop. Chipping, mud and scratches take away from that and, if done right, instead provide a more realistic picture up close. It's not an easy choice for me as I love that look too, but for my gaming models (95% of what I do), I go the same route GW takes; minimal to no dirt and chipping on infantry, more realistic wear and tear on the bigger models.

This creates a stylistic difference between the models in my forces that I struggled with in the beginning: A tank with its commander sitting in the hatch? Weather the tank with dry brush, sponge and all that, and cleanly highlight and shade the commander. Sound weird, but to me the result looks fine.

The really hard choice in this regard for me right now is, how will I go about painting Ravenwing bikers? The marines are clear - clean black with highlights and clean freehand. But the bikes? Weather them like I'll weather the Speeders and like I did with my Deathcompany Razorback? I don't know yet. It's basically the same as with my tanks, but the models are much smaller, more akin to infantry in scale than vehicles. I'd love your input if you have an opinion on that, be it specific to my case or on the topic in general.

EPK, I've got a squad of DW built, so it's definitely an option. I'm not 100% sure how I want to do the bone white yet, but I'll do a test run on the company master I've also got built some time soon. :D I suppose I'll go with what GW has done, maybe switch up the weapon casings or some other minor details.
