On Burning Wings

I, Piousservant of the Planet of Sorcerers, vow on the honour of my Legion to paint and present at least a Daemon Prince and a squad of Thousand Sons on or before the 31st of March, 2011. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

It's taken a bit longer than intended to get this thread started for reasons that will soon be clear. First off some pics of my models, it's a modest start but here it is:

The army shot, one squad of Thousand Sons and my Daemon Prince to get painted. Yeah, the Shadowsword in the background is for my Traitor Guard and it's why I've only just started on my vow units... Oops... Incidently, the Land Raider is for my Sons as well but since I really wasn't sure how to get the colour right on something with that many flat surfaces I decided to leave it out of my challenge vow.

And finally a close up of my Daemon Prince, yeah he's been painted before and has been stripped so I can try and do a better job this time around. He's also being rebased so that he doesn't look too dinky next to anyone elses Prince made from the new plastic kit. He does need some more work on his base, and then it will be painting time!

The thread name comes from my Daemon Prince who is known as Icarus. In my writing I've always imagined that when he goes into battle his wings are covered with a sorcererous fire - but I've never come up with any workable ideas to actually model it, any ideas would be appreciated!!

So, a proper update this time - with some actual paint!

Got the basic coats done on my Thousand Sons squad, and got distracted into painting the sorcerer. I don't know about anyone else but I have a terrible habit of getting distracted by characters/squad leaders/etc, need to be more disciplined with my painting!

However, I did feel bad about focussing all my attention on the sorcerer so I have started work on the worst bit of the Thousand Sons - the yellow on the headpiece. At the moment it's just the undercoat of foundation yellow so I've just left them in the background. The sorcerer is more or less done, what do you think?

The sorceror looks really nice, but the beak looks a little odd.

The colour of it kinda makes him look like a chicken rather than a hawk or some other less tasty bird.

Thanks!

Have you not heard of the fabled sorcerer Ahrim-hen? :) I think I might need to do a bit of repainting, though any suggestions on what colours would look better?

  • 1 month later...

I was starting to get a little worried as the deadline is creeping pretty close, however have had a busy weekend at the painting desk and have got a lot done (including getting distracted from painting and building new models instead - I had hoped taking part in the Challenge would curb that bad habit!). So, got the dreaded yellow bits painted, and tidied up as best I could. Tabards have been painted purple as I want to use that as a identifying colour for my cabal, and the eyes are ice blue. Have started on the gold and am half-way through the squad, so not far away from completion.

I've got a day off tomorrow so intending to do some more then, probably get my Daemon Prince sprayed and start painting him as I think he's looking a little left out...

Thanks! I haven't taken any close up pics because then you'd see how bad my painting is! :P My armies are best viewed from arms-length... But since you asked I thought I would take a closer pic:

I've had a busy, busy night. I've got the squad of Sons finished! I've been through and tided up the paint job where I could but I get to a point where I just go round in circles tiding up one colour and accidentally getting in another whilst I'm doing it and then tidying that one up and spilling that colour back on the original colour, etc... So these are done now!

Group shot:

I've also stayed up late to get a bit more done on Icarus, my Daemon Prince. You can see the start in the background above but I've done a bit more since. I have to admit I really struggle with this model. I think it's an awesome model but I've tried to paint him twice before and not been happy with it. Hoping to get a better result this time...

The first shot is after an initial v. light drybrush of astronomican grey over the skin, heavier over the wings (as they will end up white), liche purple on the tabard same as the marines and boltgun metal on the metal.

A bit more work done, put badab black over the body and the metal, followed by a few extra bits of grey and badab wash to build up the spines and the star on his chest. The detail on the tabard is shining gold applied directly, the armour fragments have been pained dwarf bronze at the moment - thinking I will put a brown wash and then a light bit of gold on top to make them look more worn. And the wings have had their first coat of white! The space marine helmet on his base is going to be Blood Angels, as they are my cousins main army... :P

Now I just have to get him completed tomorrow!!

it looks like its too late, but for the fire-wing thing, how about useing gs to mold flames on the back of the wings?

Yeah, I did think about that, but my GS skills really don't extend that far. :tu:

I did try something like that before and it didn't really work. To be honest, I've consigned that to a background thing rather than something on the model as I can't work out a feasible way of doing it and looking good. It's like the difference between the balrog model and the balrog in the film I guess....

Daemon Prince is finished! The wings were blue washed and then drybrushed with white again. I went with a red wash on the sword as a bit of contrast as I thought that would work better than more blue. Devlan mud wash and then shining gold on the armour peices and aside from that mostly just tidying up and he is now complete.
