AGPO's Angels Sanguine 2nd Company

Well, with all those annoying noobish questions I figured I'd better post some pretty pictures to stop you guys getting your black rage on.

I've been a painter and modeller as far back as I can remember. To cut a long story short after the Eye of Terror and Storm of Chaos global campaigns I took the essential 'beer and girls break' from the hobby, before rediscovering the joys of warhammer fantasy about three years ago. This was shortly followed by a move to Nottingham, where I live in the student ghetto of Lenton, exactly seven minutes' walk from Warhammer World. To be honest, WFB was always my main love. I'm much more of a modeller and a painter than a gamer, so painting loads of identically uniformed futuristic troopers never appealed. lately though, the release of the hyper detailed new Blood Angels kits persuaded me that the time was ripe to have another bash at 40k. As I said I haven't played since the days of 3rd edition and the Eye of Terror campaign, so this could be an interesting journey.

To begin then! When a mate of mine graduated and moved into his own place, he got rid of a load of his old 40k. Included were a fair handful of his old Space Marines. Now this friend (who will remain nameless) is at the opposite end of the scale to me. For him, minis are just playing pieces to be whacked together, painted and stuck on the table ASAP. When I took the marines off his hands there was a fair bit of salvage work to be done, but being a student cash is tight, so I bought a new bottle of Dettol, some greenstuff and set to work. Apologies in advance for the picture quality, which has washed out a lot of the highlights and shading.

Below is my very first Angels Saguine Marine - a tactical squad sergeant. The third picture should give a good idea of the glowing eyes effect I'm going for, as well as the custom individual Angels Sanguine shoulder pads I'm doing for every veteran, sergeant and officer. At the moment he doesn't really stand out, so I'm thinking of adding a back banner. Thoughts?

Next up are two PIP assault marines. They still need their eyes finishing and the chapter logo and squad marker adding.

This assault marine is done bar the adding of a death company bolt pistol once my Wayland Games order comes in. I painted him before the others had finished their bath to try out schemes. Turns out the glowing eyse doesn't work as well on the yellow as it does on the red or the black.

This unfortunate guy is a PIP objective marker, from a conversion done a long time ago but never painted. The Angels Sanguine have a strong association with the Deathwatch, with one of the Chapter's librarians featuring in the Deathwatch novel series from the Black Library, as well as in Inferno magazine, some of the few official bits of fluff about the chapter. For this reason, I decided he would be a Deathwatch veteran, returned to the chapter.

Lastly (for today at least) are some of the custom shoulder pads I've been working on. The first two are for the terminator squad I couldn't resist going out and buying. The second set are the first freehand version of the chapter symbol I attempted (although I'l now have to do this at least forty times for the full army) as well as the pad for my next tactical sergeant.

So there you have it folks! Feedback would be very much appreciated as this is my first new army in nearly a decade. I have the parts on order for two tactical squads, an assault squad, death company, priests and special characters, plus a salvaged rhino, dreadnought and about twenty marines to come. That and terminators, so stay tuned :)

:) Pretty awesome stuff there Brother! I especially like the objective marker (though, I feel like a D-watch brother could handle himself better in close combat ;) ) and the custom sculpts turned out great. I'm Jealous. The glowign eye lenses are a nice touch, and the lines on your half and half are nice and clean. The assault marine on the left made me laugh, his pose makes him look like he just took a bolter round... My only crit is the gold. Not being a fan of the color to begin with, I think it could use a little depth, and a highlight (maybe a silver?) That's my 2

Thanks for the feedback brother. Yeah the gold doesn't look great in the photos, but an extra wash of devlan mud or brown ink to tone it down will probably be added. One thing these pics have definitely brought home is that I need to improve my photography skills! I don't think I did my guys justice...

Looking good AGPO, the black/red divide is very neat and tidy (something which always put me off the AS!) As for making the Sgt. stand out the flashy shoulder pad does a good job, but maybe a cream loin cloth like in the codex? Also I find loads of purity seals help :P

I may try the loincloth on a future model. I'm actually half way through painting a back banner for this guy now, so that's all the ornamentation he's gonna get. I still have at least two more squads to build though, so undoubtedly some other fancy components will get a run out. Thanks for the comments.

Pretty awesome stuff, I particulary like the glowing affect you have done on the eyes. How did you do it?

As for the gold I have found that shinning gold with a wash of leviathan purple then a highlight of burnished gold then a mix of burnished gold and mithril silver in the places where the light hits works exceptionally well!

Cool stuff AGPO! I took a similiar "break" from the hobby as well. The Chapter badges are very nice. The freehand is just as impressive as the greenstuff, although the green stuff is a great idea and you have done it really well. I am more a fan of black or silver weapons, but the gold could be cool if you end up toning it down a bit. I look forward to sharing ideas with you here. I started a couple of squads of AS before the new BA models came out; just couldn't resist switching back. The AS scheme you have going is really sinister with the glowing eyes.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess you're just going to have to take my word for it that the gold is not actually that garish in RL. My photography skills are awful and I was using a borrowed camera with a flash that wouldn't turn off.[/excuses]

@1Drop - the glowing eyes is actually very easy to do, it just requires a steady hand and some patience. I used the tutorial from the librarium which should be very easy to find and lays it out stage by stage.

Anyway, I have more stuff for you today! (prolific I know :))

First up is a PIP of two of my terminators:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01141.jpg

This guy is obviously a sergeant. Still to be added ar his custom shoulder pad and tilt shield carrying his heraldry or squad symbol

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01140.jpg

I wasn't playing when space hulk came out so I missed the chance to get these awesome terminators. So far though I've managed to pick them up for between five to six pounds a marine. When you consider regular terminators are as near thirty quid as makes no difference that's not a bad deal. The sergeants will be used as characters from other successors eventually, so shelling out around a tenner for each of those is about the same price as a metal model.

This is a WIP of a back banner for one of my sergeants. several highlights are still needed to get a flat colour, as well as a scroll and any two of a numeral, company blood drop and shield with the squad marker.

Lastly, I picked up two sets of these up the other day. The wierd thing about living in Lenton and buying my boxed sets stuff from Wayland is that whilst it takes a while longer to get my core units, I can sit and have a pint in Bugman's whilst I wait for the handy WW guys to bring me my Forgeworld and bitz orders in a couple of minutes. These are going onto a couple of special projects I have in mind.

As always, any C&C you have will be much appreciated.

Well I got the tutorial done, the pictures are fairly rough but you get the idea. If it's well recieved I will do a polished version for the Librarium, and maybe do some others for the other successor chapters.

NB:Because I wanted to paint examples at each stage I've painted this on paper rather than on individual shoulderpads. For this reason the icon is a black skull on a white background rather than vice-versa. Just reverse these colours on the actual mini, unless you're painting a sanguinary priest.

How to paint the Angels Sanguine chapter symbol freehand by AGPO

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/AGPO_photos/DSC01152.jpg

Fig. I - Start with a curved shape for the main part of the skull, like a stretched crescent standing on its points.

Fig. II - Add a bottom line which goes slightly wider than the main body of the skull, then join them up wih two very small lines. Add a small trapizium under the skull for the lower jaw.

Fig. III - Fill in the shape with block colour.

Fig. IV - Add a large trapizium where the eyes are going to be, the same colour as the surface where you are painting the symbol paint another the other way up directly below which will form the base of the nose.

Fig. V - Paint two lines in the same colour as the rest of your skull to define the nose. At this point you ay want to neaten and define the eyes, as it takes practice to get them consistently in the right place.

You have now finished the basic skull. Before continuing, take a moment to work out how you want the wings to relate to the skull in terms of the size, colour and shape you want. I sketched out some basic designs (shown at the bottom) and did a few practice rounds on paper before I put brush to mini.

Fig. VI - Add two curved 'horns' to the top of the skull, and another pair of curved lines just above the jaw to form the frame of the wings.

Fig VII - Add two lines on either side to join up the two horns and form the outline of the wings.

Fig VIII - Fill in the outline with block colour. To define the feathers, sketch out lines in the colour of your surface before blocking themout. Try to make the lines consistent, leaving the same amount of solid 'wing' colour (in this case red) showing along the inside.

Voila! You can now go back and add any shading or extra details you wish. Below is an example of the same freehand applied to the backbanner of my sergeant, which I completed at about the same time I made this tutorial. You can see a rough plan of it below on the sketch sheet of designs I did for my chapter symbol.

Very impressive freehand work. You have inspired me to do some freehand but I have a BA 4th company army and have never seen any 4th banners, I assume it'll be just like the normal red and yellow one that BA use but that may be a bit difficult for me to do all of that.
