Captain Cortez and assorted Crimson Fists Sternguard

Hi,

I've always liked Captain Cortez ever since he was in the 3rd Ed. Codex and then vanished, but like many I felt the model didn't do him much justice; however I finished work for the summer and had a few weeks left before I have to go back to Uni, so I thought I'd try my hand at making him and some other Marines, the first time I've had a crack at anything Warhammer-related for a few years.

My version's not very exciting I know, but from my point of view he's preferable to the GW version. The Photos aint the best... operating on a camera that is pretty ancient ;)

Also here's the Standard bearer for the 4th company of which Cortez is Captain.

Should have some Sternguard up tomorrow, feel free to comment and criticize of course :P

First pic is broken.

Regardless, very cool stuff! I had the old Cortez and the "Saturday Night Fever" pose was pretty rough. I really like the attention to detail you've got here. The added strap around his thigh for the pistol holster, all the laurels added everywhere.

Nice job!

Thanks for pointing that out. Ought to be fixed now.

Thanks! and yeah I'm really not sure what GW where thinking with that pose. The head was awful too - it's a passable mini if you replace the head but then it ceases to be Cortez I guess.

Very, very nice!

The highlights on the squad look better, subtler than on the first two miniatures. The eye-lenses are beautifully done.

One suggestion I would make is to write something on the metal scrollwork atop the standard bearer's pole. Often I see scrollwork sculpted on miniatures and people paint it but don't paint anything on it.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Cortez's hair is all wrong. THIS is Cortez:

Although your version is nice too.

Lovely dark blue you have there, And I like how you muted the red for the fists, otherwise the contrast would have been too striking.

Though I've recently gotten some Sternguard myself, and was wondering if you had any tips for the other members of a ten man squad who wouldn't be the ones out of the Sternguard box. What kind of bitz or miniatures should I use to convert them?

Cheers! :D i am intending to do so, I just have no idea what to write on there that I can fit on there and that would be meaningful. I'll get around to it...

The hair looks better in real life, it's not the best photo. I see what you mean though, he does have bigger hair in the original artwork too, which is what I went off more than that hopeless model :P However my total lack of greenstuff skills meant i had to use an existing head, and the hair on that was as close as I could get haha.

As far as making them goes, I used magazines from the terminator sets cut in half to make 2 Sternguard mags, the straps/ slings are from the Kroot set, and the Crux terminatus shoulder pads from the command squad. The rest is just bits and bobs from other SM sets. Depending on what chapter you're doing, have a look for molded pads on the GW site, instead of using transfers B)

I use this guy as one of my sternguard. Huge fan of the pose.

Yeah, that model is constructed entirely from awesome.

Apart from the tiny magazine on his bolter, I never really understood why it didn't have a normal one.

I'd say it's better than that anonymous gw in getting the character of Cortez..if you'd only add some more subtle details..maybe in a conquistadores style..it would be a blast!

hate the BA ass hairstyle heads tho.. :P

Hi, went home last weekend so I had a chance to make this Company Champion-looking fella out of an old Dark Angel. Not too sure about the robes, i've never painted that much cloth before, but I hope it worked out OK :)

Also, I got some better pictures of Cortez that show his scars and power fist a bit better, although they are a tad dark...

I also started an apothecary who I'll finish next time i go home. Painting white is no fun! :)

Niiiiice, where did you get/how did you make/spoons the laurel wreath helms? I'm looking for some of those for my Ultramarines army.

The one that the Sgt. is wearing came from the Crimson Fist Command pack (which is where the laurel wreath shoulder pads came from too) but I made the Champion's one by cutting the seperate plastic laurel wreath from the SM Command Squad in half and putting one half each side of the central ridge/ vent thing on the helmet. Simples

Sweet... to be honest though, the custom wreath looks alot nicer than the Crimson Fists one. I was considering buying a bunch of Sanguinary Guard helmets with laurels and filing off the blood drop to do mine, hah. Thanks!
