To mark their company, they paint the trim of their shoulder pads and their knee pads their company colour, and mark the company number on their left knee. Sergeants also paint the stipe on their helmet that signifies their rank their companies colour.

Famous Engagements:

859.M34-The Sacking of Mecron

The first major engagement of the chapter. A Chaos fleet arrived in the Mecria system, and preceded to set about ransacking Mecron, the only inhabited planet in the system. The Sharks responded quickly, and deployed the 4th Company to destroy the ground forces attacking the capital. The Chaos forces where trapped between the Guard forces within the city, and the marines deploying behind them. The eventual battle was short and bloody. The Imperial forces won the day, but Mecron has never recovered.

978.M35-The Unification Wars

The Sharks deployed their entire chapter during the unification war against the Nova Terra Interregnum. They shattered the traitor guardsmen on Unbrol VII, and fight their way to the heart of the Interregnum. The Sharks ran boarding actions on the defence fleet in orbit of Nova Terra, causing the ships to fire on their allies, allowing the other marines to deploy to the planet’s surface and bring the usurpers to justice.

005.M39-The Battle for Terrus

The 3rd Company deploys to the Terrus system to crush an Ork Waaagh! Although the captain of the company, Tezron Cymin, was able to destroy the beast leading the Waaagh!, eventually bringing it to it’s end, the 3rd Company was devastated by the conflict and was not able to see action for another 50 years.

995.M40-The Macharian Conquests

The Sliver Sharks join the Macharian Conquests and assist in reclaiming parts of the Imperium that had been lost to darkness for thousands of years. After Macharius dies, the Sharks fight to hold the Syntun, Tellus and Earion systems form falling back into the darkness, before a group of missionaries arrive and solidify the Imperial claim to the sector.

999.M41-The 13th Black Crusade

Chapter Master Kezrin Sphyrna brings his enitre chapter to the Eye of Terror form their wars in the Oni system to fight off Abaddon. The Sharks assist in the defence of the Pellos system, before launching a devastating counter attack against the Sons of Tyrion. They are currently defending the Cadian system. Several times they attempted to uproot the Chaos ground forces on Cadia, but so far have been unsuccessful.

Heraldry:

Standard marines are painted silver with white shoulder-pads. The company colours are painted on the shoulder trim and the kneepads. Sergeants paint the stripe on their helmets their company colour. The company number is also painted on the left kneepad.

Marines of the First Company paint their helmets white. They leave their shoulder trims and kneepads painted the silver of the chapter.

Unlike other chapters, the Terminators of the Silver Sharks place their Crux Terminous on their right shoulder. The reason for this is no longer known, but the tradition continues.

The Fleet:

The chapter possesses no homeworld, and instead exist within a large chapter fleet. Unlike the fleets of the Black Templars or the Imperial Fists, the fleet of the Sliver Sharks move as a unified force. During a campaign, the main body of the fleet will wait back and form up in orbit of a nearby star, whilst elements are dispatched to fight on the front line.

The main body of the fleet often doesn’t more far or fast. It may take years to cross a system, only activating the warp drives when it has to. The advantage to this is twofold. Firstly, individual ships always know where to go to find the fleet. And secondly, the fleet contains everything a chapter world would, so any recruits picked up from nearby planets can be trained easily.

The fleet itself is a vast affair. As well as the eight company strike cruisers and the few battle-barges, the fleet boasts hundreds of various auxiliary craft, including forges, training facilities, and the Librarium, Apothocarium and Reculsiarchy.

These final three ships are unique craft, each one hand crafted by the original Techpriests of the Chapter. They are gilded, and protected by some of the most powerful void shields in the Imperium. They fly in close formation to the Fortress-Monastery, often protected additionally by it’s void shields.

Chapter Organisation:

Each company has it’s own Strike Cruiser, with the exception of the Tenth and First Companies. The Tenth is placed on specialised training ships and the First exists upon the Fortress-Monastery as the Chapter Master’s personal guard.

In a similar style to the Wolf Guard of the Space Wolves, the Chapter Master selects members of the First Company. Unlike the Wolf Guard, there is an unwritten rule about selection of the First Company, that being that a marine must be able to go into battle bareheaded. The Master expects his personal guard to be in control of themselves at all times, and inexperienced marines who may run blindly forwards are not acceptable. Individual squads are often gifted to captains at the start of campaigns. These experienced marines are very important, providing fighting skill on the battlefield, an important advice to the captain before combat.

As the Master’s guard, he selects them for certain jobs. Sternguard are those brothers who have incredible self control and aim, Vanguard form an aggressive vanguard or strike unit, and Terminators are the best of the best, able to handle any circumstance efficiently. The Master’s Honour Guard are chosen from this elite cadre. They are his personal bodyguard, and so, are the best-armed and trained brothers in the chapter.

The Chaplains of the Silver Sharks are a rare and elite breed. Only those who have been able to cleanse themselves of the Desire are allowed into their hallowed halls. To represent their purity, the Chaplains paint their armour a bright white colour. They believe that the Desire is something that can be overcome by mental skill.

Apothecaries have a different belief. They view the Desire as a purely biological flaw, something that can be cured and removed from the gene seed of the Sharks. Their studies have shown mixed results. Only once have they succeeded, in the case of then Brother-Sergeant Tybor, of Eighth Company, now Captain of Eighth.

Combat Doctrine:

The Sharks favour the direct, powerful and aggressive assault favoured by their namesakes, often using Rhinos or Drop Pods. Once disembarked, the Sharks will advance, Tactical Marines spraying bolter fire across the enemy lines to soften them up for their Assault Marine brethren.

Owing to being both fleet based and fond of violent assaults, the Sharks also posses more Caestus Assault Rams than any other chapter. These are often deployed in squadrons of three, deploying elite or specialised units into the core of the enemy army to distract them whilst the main body of the force is deployed. In a similar style, the chapter is also in possession of several Storm Ravens that were originally gifted to them by the Blood Angels after the Jestun Campaign. These are in possession of the First Company, and are often used in conjunction with the Assault Rams, providing fire support whilst the transports deploy their deadly cargo.

Despite being a Codex chapter, the Sharks vary off owing to their opinions of ranged fire support. Whilst they understand the necessity for it, they believe that a true warrior is born on the front line, his blade biting into the flesh of his enemies. Therefore, Devastator squads are formed of young marines, who are not yet fully able to control their Desire to Hunt and cannot be risked being placed near their foe. The sergeants that lead the Devastator squads are the most trusted advisors of the company captain, as they are entrusted with the future of the chapter. These brothers are often those who have turned down the honour of induction into the First Company, choosing to safeguard the future of the chapter. More experienced marines are placed in Tactical squads, which never include heavy weapons, as they plan on getting as close to the foe as possible. The most experienced marines are placed in Assault Marine squads. This leads to a unique system for the reserve companies, with marines starting in the Ninth, and moving up to the Seventh. Their ‘boots on the ground’ style means that very few marines are willing to crew tanks other than Rhinos and Razorbacks, as they would much rather be directly spilling the blood of their foes.

However, the need for transport and armoured support is recognised by the chapter. Some brothers are affected by the Desire less than their brothers, and are inducted into the tank companies; others simply prefer the concept of long-ranged warfare and opt to crew tanks instead of joining the Tactical squads. The exception comes in the form of the Land Raider. These tanks are no longer made in the chapter, making the majority of them well over 2,000 years old. These venerated tanks are held in as much esteem as the Dreadnoughts of the chapter, and crewing them is regarded as a great honour.

Gene Seed:

Despite the relative purity of the Carcharodons, some mutations exist within the gene seed of the Sliver Sharks. The violent aggression of their parent chapter is inherent to the Sharks’ genetics. The Sharks’ are subject to a mindless and furious rage caused by the scent of blood. The Sharks have a powerful sense of smell, and can detect scents at several parts per million. The scent of blood calls to a dark instinct, driving them to hunt, kill and in some cases consume, the owner of that blood. For that reason, younger marines (often those younger than 150 years) are not permitted to remove their helmet on the field of battle.

Because of this, much of their training during their time as initiates is given over to meditation in order to control as suppress their Desire to Hunt, as it is known within the chapter. This is continued throughout a marine’s life, and even the chapter master is known to meditate.

As well as the mutation casing their incredible sense of smell (and the associated Desire to Hunt), the gene seed causes their teeth to sharpen and become serrated. One of the greatest honours that can be granted to a Shark is to be allowed to go into battle bareheaded, allowing them to make use of their powerful bite. These marines are able to control their Desire to Hunt, and can use this powerful skill without any threat of them going berserk.

Many an enemy champion has been killed by the swift bite of a Sliver Shark, and the Sharks themselves see it as an honourable way to die.

Philosophy and Beliefs:

The Battle-Brothers of the Sliver Sharks fully acknowledge their desire. Whilst a few view it as a gift, and equal amount view it as a vile part of them. The majority however, view it simply as a fact of life, something that can’t be helped, but that must be controlled.

The brothers rely on meditation to control their desire. This leads to a perfectionist nature that almost borders on obsession. The meditation itself is shrouded in ritual. Much of it is based around unity between squad members and blood. The most common practice is for squads to place themselves in a circle, sometimes around a shallow saucer filled with blood, and the ritual is lead by the squad sergeant, or sometimes a chaplain. This forms a powerful unity between squad mates, and a fierce loyalty to the sergeant.

The Chaplains often lead these meditations. An important part of their duties is devising new systems or techniques to make the meditations more effective. They also look after those brothers who have fallen to the Desire. The main aim is to cleanse those brothers of their blood lust and return them to their companies. Whilst this is usually successful, there are sometimes brothers who are lost to their desire. These brothers are formed into squads called Hunters. The job of the Hunters is to die, much like the Death Company. However, there are usually only several Hunters per century. Also, unlike the Death Company, those that fall to the Desire do not become bloodthirsty bezerkers. Hunters degenerate into stealthy hunters, hungry for flesh.

A marine knows which marine his gene seed came from and how that brother served. The marine believes that he will live on in the marine who receives their gene seed. Because of this, each marine believes that he must honour his ‘progenitor’, any so will take any opportunity to do thus in battle. For example, Brother Vexus once stood at the Gates of Vernes Thor against the tide of greenskins for a day and a night, purely to gain honour for his progenitor.

Like all chapters, the Sharks venerate the Emperor. Like very few chapters, the Sharks worship the Emperor as a god, and one who has a direct influence in life.

Recent History:

In recent times, the chapter has been thrown into more wars than any other time in their history. The chapter has seen constant war for the past 250 years.

In 746.M41, the chapter had its first engagement with the Tyranid threat, meeting them on the planet Yrim VII. The Sharks formed a bulwark against the swarm, allowing the citizens of the planet to escape. After the citizens left the planet, Inquisitor Tybos ordered the Sharks impose exterminous upon the planet, destroying what they thought was a large body of the hive fleet.

In 797.M41, the 5th Company arrived at the Siege of Zalathras, assisting the Ultramarine forces in destroying the greenskin forces. In the same year, the 2nd Company fought an Iron Warrior taskforce attempting to escape an Adeptus Mechanicus research facility with an experimental weapon designed to cause stars to go nova. The taskforce was obliterated, but a single ship, the Wrath of Iron escaped. It was never confirmed whether the nova-bomb was aboard the Wrath.

In 969.M41, Typhus and his ship, the Terminus Est, arrived in the Cando system and begun spreading the Zombie Plague. The 2nd Company deployed its entire strength to crush the rising tide of undead. Whilst the zombies themselves were destroyed easily, the Death Guard that accompanied them were another matter entirely. The two forces fell into a stalemate, with lines drawn along the capital city. This state remained for another year, before members of the Grey Knights arrived to crush the Chaos uprising. Between the two chapters the Chaos forces are crushed.

Lord Kezrin summoned his entire chapter to Cadia to fight against Abaddon and his Black Crusade. When they arrived, the commander of the Imperial forces, Logan Grimnar, ordered them to fortify the line at Pellos. They joined with the Knights of the Lion chapters to defend against a vast Iron Warriors force, lead by Warsmith Honus aboard the Wrath of Iron. Kezrin lead an elite Terminator squad, the Hunters of Traitors, onto the ship, and fought their way to the bridge. Only four of the original ten men arrived on the bridge. Kezrin duelled Honus, and killed him. The Silver Sharks steered the ship into the sun, teleporting out with mere seconds to spare. Before it’s destruction, the Wrath was detected teleporting a large metallic object to one the smaller frigates. The Iron Warriors retreated after the death of their commander, and the Fourth Company was sent after them to goad them back into the Eye. Kezrin was summoned back to Cadia to assist in removing Abaddon’s ground forces. They are still engaged in this battle today.

You have some sound ideas but you need to format your IA as of now it is a group of notes. Here you can find how most of our writers format their IAs. Also on your revision focus on the areas that makes your chapter standout, perhaps making their mutations more reasonable and cooler.

First, welcome to the Liber and its dark rituals of DIY.

Second, outside of the Guide to DIY, there is also Octaguide 2.0.

Now...

Since Brother Tyler has had actually good idea in other thread, I'm going to ask: What do you want to do with your Chapter? In other words what is you aim and desire. - By the by, the right answer is: "I want my Chapter to be <insert list of traits, characterasition... ;) characterisation or theme>."

Therefore, Devastator squads are formed of young marines, who must learn to control their anger before being places near their foe. More experienced marines are placed in Tactical squads, which never include heavy weapons, as they plan on getting as close to the foe as possible. The most experienced marines are placed in Assault Marine squads. Because of this, the chapter possesses no reserve companies, as they do not fit within the combat doctrine of the Sharks.

- I'm sorry, but this is set on the head. IF the marines are "subject to a mindless and furious rage, often at relatively minor things" and the young marines doesn't have good control over it, how do you expect them to be good sharpshooters? What would prevent them to charge enemy instead of shooting him dead?

- The reserve companies are here to train the *new* marines in all arts of space marine stuff. You just need to re-adjust their hierarchy to cope with the progress of marine in your Chapter.

As well as the mutation casing their violent rages, the gene seed of the Sliver Sharks also causes the teeth of the marine to become much shaper with age. Also, once a tooth is lost (which is surprisingly often), it will grow back within a few days. Whilst this grants the Sharks an advantage, the Sharks believe biting their foes to be useless, as the Emperor has gifted them such strengths, which leads to them always ware their helmets. However, a direct bite to the neck is often the chosen method of death for those foes regarded to be important or significant. The Sharks are also strong swimmers, and able to breath in water owing to a mutation in their multi-lung. Sadly, this is rarely used in battle.

- This paragraph screams at me, "They are man-sharks! They are man-sharks!". It's rather cheesy and from what I see, it doesn't add anything relevant or important to your IA.

Cheers, NightrawenII.

Isn't that bit a little contradictory?

If biting thier foes is 'useless', why do they do it? :)

It could be used to symbolically say 'this enemy of mankind is too unimportant to waste bolt shells on', except you've got them doing this to important/significant tagets.

I'm right alongside the image of your marines putting the bite on important targets; that's really really cool, very feral and flavourful.

But if you stick with that, it might be worth dropping the bit that says they think biting is useless. :P

I do have to admit, after thinking about it today, a lot of the ideas I had for this chapter didn't work or were just a bit stupid.

Here's the thoughts that were going through my head:

1. The helmet thing was owing to hating painting skin

2. Ok "man-sharks" may seem funny, but the Space Wolves are "man-wolves"

3. I hate the idea of reserve companies

4. The new guys being Devastators is to force them to control their anger and channel it into blowing the living @&*% out of their enemies.

Ok, here's my new thoughts:

1. More emphasis on the biting thing

2. Bring them away from the Blood Angels vibe (I noticed this, don't know about everyone else)

3. Rethinking of the rage, maybe into a desire to hunt or consume, something a bit more sharky (cliche, but hey, every chapter needs some)

4. Some form of specialisation that makes them different from other assault chapters.

All thoughts appreciated!

This is all to familiar with Flesh Eater BA's.

The whole Space Shark is the new "rule of cool" but to model your marines into half-sharks; your then walking a fine line of having the "I" visit you with an exterminatus stamp. B) Second you can still do this but I would drop the whole "bite/ teeth" bit as its too borderline "were-shark". If your into doing no face models then use corvus heads, and model teeth on them to show ornate armor. You could use the polyesian style, and say they file there teeth down as a scare tactic. That works. Hope this helps your IA.

Ok, here's my new thoughts:

1. More emphasis on the biting thing

I agree this is a unique trait that can make your chapter standout! I would think of ways to add biting into other sections in your IA not just the Combat Doctrine section, perhaps ceremonies or rituals. Since they grow back so fast maybe they rip out a tooth for each vow they take or something.

2. Bring them away from the Blood Angels vibe (I noticed this, don't know about everyone else)

Definitely avoid being just like a chapter, but it is ok to have some similarities.

3. Rethinking of the rage, maybe into a desire to hunt or consume, something a bit more sharky (cliche, but hey, every chapter needs some)

Research sharks and find out if their is something that your marines can use. I believe sharks hunt by blood scent so maybe your marines have a similar trait.

4. Some form of specialisation that makes them different from other assault chapters.

If you can incorporate biting into their close quarters combat style that my friend is unique, a chainsword swing followed by a bite attack is cool. Ofcourse this will require your marines to not wear helmets or better yet in close combat after a foe has been cut the scent of blood makes them disregard their helmets and they start to use their teeth aswell as their other weapons.

Any way keep up the good work, I know it seems like you have a long way to go but that is only because you have new ideas you want to add!

2. Ok "man-sharks" may seem funny, but the Space Wolves are "man-wolves"

Well, technically speaking, the Wulfen are man-wolves, the *normal* Wolves are more vikings, but whatever...

3. I hate the idea of reserve companies

hmmm, why? :P

4. The new guys being Devastators is to force them to control their anger and channel it into blowing the living @&*% out of their enemies.

This would reguire some detail, how is this done... the possibility of charging their enemy and thus losing the fire support is still here.

2. Bring them away from the Blood Angels vibe (I noticed this, don't know about everyone else)

They are more like Flesh Tearers, though. + most DIY Chapters, who are CC specialists are berzerkers in one way or another.

4. Some form of specialisation that makes them different from other assault chapters.

Easy. In order to make your Chapter different you have to give them different and original creed and/or character.

++++

That being said, drop the idea of rage altogether. Like I said above, the rage + cc specialists = job done is common approach around this place. If you want 'shark' Chapter then the silent, relentless and deadly hunter is the way to go.

And you didn't aswer my question:

What do you want to do with your Chapter? In other words what is you aim and desire. - By the by, the right answer is: "I want my Chapter to be <insert list of traits, characterisation or theme>."

If I'm honest, I want my Chapter to be different, and just a bit sharky. The different bit is obvious, and sharks are one of the most fascinating animals on the planets, different to most other fish, including the other cartellaginous fish.

But, to be honest, I started this be using the name generator to get a name and the chapter painter to get a style. I only really considered their character quite late in the day.

I do like the slient hunter approach though, but in this I'm thinking more Great White attacking dolphin. It ain't pretty, but by goodness does it work. Cliche, yes, but I'm liking it.

Just as a note, I have slightly re-jigged the chapter ideas, taking on board what was said last time it was commented upon.

Also, I'm not sure if what I'm saying is making any sense to anyone else.

I was going to post a very sarcastic reply, but I did hold myself back. Be glad... :P

Nevertheless, there is different and there is a different. Being different for the sake of being different leads to... funny ends. Just read the Paradigm thread, it should be around here.

Instead, think what makes your Chapter different from the 1000+ other Chapters. If you can capture these diferences/traits, then you are half way through the making of Chapter.

But, to be honest, I started this be using the name generator to get a name and the chapter painter to get a style. I only really considered their character quite late in the day.

Well, it's not too late to buy our product. Fill in this form and send it on adress.... Oops! Sorry, wrong place! ;)

It shouldn't be hard. ^_^ Really. :) It's not hard or difficult at all. :tu:

The best start is the simple description of the average battle-brother of Silver Sharks (that's the guy from battle company, in the case you didn't know), from what I'm reading your marine is quite bloodthirsty and savage, yet disciplined and focused. What's next? Is he; grim, determined, callous, cautious, vicious, stubborn, relentless, noble, honourable, ruthless, merciless, brutal, perfectionist, patient, unforgivable, purposeful, cold, furious, hateful, spiteful, malicious, deceitful et cetera et cetera... What he likes, what he hates? What is his inspiration, what is his aspiration?

Edit: Let Emperor curses those, who change the name of their threads!

Cheers, NightrawenII.

I like where you are taking this, I'm getting a good feeling of an individual marine's character and temperament, though I find it harder to get a handle on your chapter as a whole right now. Keep up the good work though, I'm looking forward to seeing the end results.

Small Far Away, after rereading your stuff, I found more of your chapter's character. I think I've just become biased towards the Index Astartes format, so I was expecting it to read in that fashion. Right now, comparatively speaking, your ideas are a little less focused, but very well explained. Your marines sound like they'd go to war with a boots on the ground approach that I like, my own DIY chapter is very much that way. But what about a support tank like the land raider? And maybe mention something like the youngsters in a devastator squad are led by the oldest, most experienced sergeants to show them how to control their rage, focus it and use it?

After a quick reread, I had a thought. How would your veteran company fight? Would they take to the field as assault terminators, or vanguard vets? Or have all veterans truly mastered their rage to the point tactical terminators and sternguard would have a place in their ranks?

That is something I have been thinking about more recently, and I'm thinking of having them as an advanced vanguard.

But I do have to fugure out the viabillity of Sternguard. As they're the Chapter Master's personal guard, perhaps he tells them what to do. I'm not sure yet.
