My Night Lords (Counts-As Blood Angels) Army

Kaika87

Recommended Posts

Yes, yes, I know, Counts-As rage, etc. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I'm posting this here for three reasons:

1) To stop me from procrastinating on certain things. Posting updates to a thread lets me delude myself into thinking someone might notice if I stop working on the army (Skyrim and TOR beta divide my attention).

2) To get feedback and tips, seeing as I am completely a novice still.

3) Because, with only 8 months under my belt since I bought and painted my first miniatures, I am damn proud of the results I've produced and want to share my accomplishments.

So without further ado, I'll kick things off by showing off my pride and joy, my first completed Night Lords Sanguinary Guard. Apologies for my poor camera skills.

Really cool. Are those Gargoyle wings?

Why is one shoulder pad trimmed silver?

@

Gargoyle wings, yup and a Dark Eldar sword. As for the silver trim, it was born from something I'm doing for the Assault Marine squads, to differentiate them, painting the trim of the right shoulder pad something different for each squad. Moving down the line from that, I decided to do this for the army, giving the Sanguinary Guard silver trim, the Priests white trim, and the HQ models gold trim to match the rest of the armor.

So here I am back at home with my minis, and I figure I should upload the other ones I have finished right now. Here's my Mephiston:

And here's what I have for a Librarian with a jump pack, using a Possessed winged backpack for the "jump pack"

Last, but not least, while these guys aren't "done" (missing backpacks and two of them have no lightning detail) I figured I'd show you what I'm doing for the squad identifiers I talked about in my last post.

Sorry to bump my own thread, but I do have a few nagging questions.

1) The Night Lords symbol. What do I do? The VIII legion decals look so puny on the CSM trransfer sheet. I do have photoshop, so I'm considering making my own decal sheet. What do you think?

2) The Night Lords I'm building to are a fair bit more rigid in structure than some of their more degenerate counterparts. Still, the touch of the warp has affected them after ten millennia in the Eye of Terror (hence their power weapons glowing with a purple energy rather than crackling electric power fields, and if I ever maje any Death Company, they'll be modelled as possessed marines). Their rigid structure is the reasoning behind the different shoulder trim for squad designations. From a visual standpoint, I'd appreciate feedback on how they look with the rest of the armor.

3) Mephiston. Does he look sufficiently Mephisty? I plan on trying to make sure there are no other power axes in the army, to distinguish his force weapon from others.

EDIT: 4) I'm thinking of doing a snow theme for their bases. I'm trying to find a good tutorial for that, and then maybe shelling out for some resin bases to cover in snow. Suggestions?

Not got long to answer as i have to pop out so forgive me for my short answers, im not being rude.

1) I think doing your own decals should be fairly easy and well worth the result if you make them unique to your army.

2) I think the colours you used are fine, just right to distinguish each squad enough without being either lost or too bright.

3) Other than the model having an axe rather than sword which may not sit well with some "WYSIWYG/true counts as" players, i think you would get away with it as long as you DO make sure its the only one in the army (as you said).

4) Ive done the same thing with my bases. Follow the link in my signature to see my examples and for a description of how i did it, hopefully that should help. I use dark age clear resin bases with little icicles on them. You mask the ice and paint them as normal. To be honest, they are quite pricey so i only use them on special models and the end result is not as good as i like. Ive seen some really cool icicles done with fishing line and super glue, and there are ice/water effect kits available from a lot of model shops or online. They probably take as much time and effort as the dark age bases but look a lot cooler in my opinion. Ill be doing that myself from now on.

Looking at your models, its obvious you have a fairly steady hand and have the basic painting skills nailed. If you want to take these models up a level, i think you'll find it quite quick and easy to add some gentle edge highlights to give the dark colour scheme a little contrast. I dont mean that in a "mean" or critical way, your painting is very good as it is. I just think you can add a couple of really easy techniques to your repertoire to take these models from "nice" to "really nice" Have a little practice with some watered down paint using only a tiny bit on the brush so you dont create highlights that are too defined, ill bet after an hour or so you'll get the knack. Also, washes such as badab black or sepia are very good for adding quick shading. The trick is to water it down at least 50/50 and add it deep areas of the model rather than flooding the whole model with a wash. Build it up in a couple of layers doing a little overlap on the deepest parts. Its really quick and easy, and gets good results.

Anyway, really good work so far, im looking forward to seeing more.

That is one option. The other is to buy this.

I like the idea of having squad designations in traitor legions/warbands.

Personally I would have used Khorne Berzerkers for the DC, but Possessed are a nice Idea as well. Hmm, maybe possessed Berzerkers...

It might be, because your models sill lack the legion emblem, but I think your models don't have enough red on them. Look here or there

3) Mephiston. Does he look sufficiently Mephisty? I plan on trying to make sure there are no other power axes in the army, to distinguish his force weapon from others.
Hmm, not sure. The axe looks fine, but I think the armour is a bit plain, though robed. The horns on the helmet kind of block the ornamentation of the backpack.

I'm thinking about CSM aspiring champion torso front, SM commander Torso back, some arms and legs, NL shoulder pad, tzeentch shoulder pad and a helmet without horns/bunny ears.

Personally I prefer freehanding the Legion symbol, it makes each symbol seem tailored and unique (which it is!)

WIP Update #1

Here is an update, as of today my work on Commander Dante is 90% done, so I decided to pose him in a picture with the in-progress Sanguinary Guard

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i285/kaika87/20120120_222313.jpg

And a close-up of Dante himself

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i285/kaika87/20120120_223055.jpg

Still needs work in the painting department, obviously, but this was a conversion I was planning for weeks and was so giddy to get him together that I sorta rushed it a bit. I'll touch him up later for the finished product, when I paint his weapons.

Finished the dreadnought assembly this morning, magnetizing his two arms. I am going to have to order a meltagun and stormbolter from ebay for this guy's blood talon arms, as the storm bolters for Forge World Dreadnoughts, as I discovered, are not meant to be mounted to the actual arm.

Very, very cool models Kaika87!

You've got a lot of imagination, and I think C:BA is going to work out as a great choice!

A couple of things I'd advise are drilling weapon barrels (both the barrel and side holes in the case of bolt weapons) as it makes them look a lot better, and secondly be careful to remove all the mould lines you can (for example one along the top of the librarian's bolt pistol).

Thank you! I've never been good at drilling weapon barrels, but I recently got a tip from a friend that I will try using now (use a thumb tack to make an initial hole in the right spot). Also I'm usually very diligent about mold lines, and I can't believe I never saw that on the Librarian before! I've since corrected it, thank you for pointing it out.

More updates via cell phone camera incoming! I apologize for my hand being in every one of these shots, but good lighting for pictures is at a premium, and I need to put my hand behind the model so that the camera doesn't focus on the background.

Here are some shots of the Sanguinary Guard I assembled (and in the case of the power fist, finished assembling). In an attempt to give the Sanguinary Guard a bit more personality, I ensured that no two had the same weapon for their master-crafted power weapon. One of them has a Dark Eldar power sword, another has a razorflail, a third has an old (90s-ish) Chaos Space Marine power sword, and the last one has the sword from a Bloodletter. The Power Fist I found with the sword in the same ebay auction for old 90s CSM weapons sprue. Got them on the cheap too, and I love both of them.

Quick note, the Guard missing an arm is because I'm waiting for an Infernus pistol from ebay.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i285/kaika87/20120122_202444.jpg

And lastly, I have the Sergeants for Red Squad and Tan Squad of the ASM. Tan still needs his lightning detail and jump pack, but I wanted to show off the desecration I did to the aquila on his power fist. I know it's not complex or anything, but I'm hoping it does the job effectively.

I have now put the finishing touches on the Sanguinor! A bit of explanation is due for this guy, because I can't really take most of the credit. I started this army when I bought a whole mess of Chaos Marines from a guy in my local area, and this conversion was among them. I don't know how he did it, but it's awesome, and I painted it to be my Sanguinor. Behold.

Nice use of Tomb Kings bitz.

All of your stuff looks really cool.

Since you are using "Counts-as Blood Angels" I really hope that your Legion is represented well so that you can turn all those raptors into troops choices and infernus pistols into melta guns in a proper codex.

Thank you for your kind words, I'm actually really enjoying this project now that I'm in the swing of it.

Since you are using "Counts-as Blood Angels" I really hope that your Legion is represented well so that you can turn all those raptors into troops choices and infernus pistols into melta guns in a proper codex.

I'm not really sure what you mean by the Night Lords being represented well, but I figure now is as good a time as any to explain myself on the counts-as front. To be frank, I'm someone that, when deciding what I wanted to do for my second army, I settled on the Blood Angels codex because, coming off of the Dark Angels, the sheer vareity of viable options that I could field was staggering. But ultimately, I didn't want to build just another marine army. I wanted to have fun with the modelling. And so I decided I'd use Chaos Space Marine models. After which I started pouring over fluff and finding out more about each Traitor Legion and Renegade Chapter. Ultimately, I liked the Night Lords the best. Thus, the project was born.

If/when Chaos Legions comes out, and if I like the book, I will certainly expand my Night Lords force to include a Legion army. But I will not be dismantling this one to do so.

Well! Now that that's out of the way, time for an update! Purchased and partially assembled my first Razorback the other day, still need to do the treads and paint it, but I refuse to show incomplete shots of my vehicles. Infantry, on the other hand, are a different matter! Here are my two Sanguinary Priests, incomplete but finally both assembled. I had procrastinated on the second one until last night because of how much of a pain it was to shave the GK Terminator apothecary arm down. The one that's (mostly) painted will also have a heresy jump pack, but it still needs some work. Chapterhouse makes good stuff, but it needs a bit of cleaning. And in keeping with my theme for the right shoulder pad trim, the Priests will have white trim shoulder pads.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i285/kaika87/20120130_074154-1.jpg

One final note, I'm debating swapping the horned head for a Mk IV helmet on the one guy (I assembled him before making the decision to buy the Forge World Mk IV kit). What do you guys think?

EDIT: At this point, I'm gonna try something different. Every Monday morning, alongside any WIP updates I have, I will also repost my status list from before, to reflect progress for the week. So here's the first one!

Update #7 with a WIP shot of the last of the HQ section, my Librarian sans jump pack.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i285/kaika87/20120201_073349-1.jpg

I wanted to also take a moment to let this update be a bit informative. This is a tip I found when I was starting my Night Lords and I wish I had known it for all the other gold I ever painted. A smooth undercoat of Calthan Brown goes leaps and bounds towards bringing out any gold painted over it. I use Burnished Gold for the trim on these guys, but it works just as well on Shining Gold and Dwarf Bronze. Seriously, it's one of the best tips I ever got, and I wanted to share.

As promised, time for my first true "weekly" update of status (given that the last one was really a couple weeks between the it and the first status post):

Commander Dante - Complete!

Mephiston - Complete!

The Sanguinor - Complete!

Librarian with Jump Pack - Complete!

Librarian without Jump Pack - In Progress

2 Sanguinary Priests with Jump Packs - In Progress

Sanguinary Guard - In Progress

Furioso Dreadnought Unnamed - In Progress

10-man Assault Squad Red with jump packs - In Progress

10-man Assault Squad Tan with jump packs - In Progress

5-man Assault Squad Green without jump packs - In Progress

Razorback Unnamed - Not Started

5-man Assault Squad Black without jump packs - In Progress

Razorback Unnamed - In Progress

Baal Predator Unnamed - In Progress

Baal Predator Unnamed - Not Started

Predator Unnamed - Not Started

Predator Unnamed - Not Started

I admit, not much has really changed, has it? Well that's what you'd think anyway. I'm doing my best to abide by the guide for "How to Paint an Army in 30 Days' up there, namely the biggest thing I've been doing this week is making an assembly line out of my Assault Marines. As such, at this point, all 30 Assault Marines are assembled (with the exception of a couple shoulder pads here and there - ones that would be a pain to paint after gluing. Additionally, I went a little crazy and decided I'm going to magnetize the power packs and jump packs on these guys, so after a bit of experimentation on some spare bits, I made it happen. So I've now got 30 assembled Assault Marines, largely unpainted of course but all primed at minimum, with their assigned weapons and magnetized backpacks. I was very careful when gluing the magnets in place so that any pack could stick to any marine. Phone's having a bit of technical.difficulty at the moment, but I'll throw up a group picture when I get it sorted out.

Oh and for those curious (probably nobody, heh), the Librarian without a jump pack is in mostly the same state. As he's the last HQ choice, I'm saving him to work on whenever the assembly-line work gets too tedious. Working on special characters and HQs is just buckets of fun, so he's basically my mental break when I need one.

good luck with the assault marines! Did you magnetize them or?

kinda curious how you will do the sanguinary guard

I did indeed magnetize the Assault Marine jump packs. Actualy, that was basically what my wall of text up there is saying, in short. As for the Sanguinary Guard, I've got this one that is completely finished, done as the testbed model for this concept before I started formally working on the LPC vow.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i285/kaika87/NLGuard1.jpg

I haven't given the packs to any of the other SG yet, but all 5 of them are assembled and painted. I'm just stalling because those packs are such a pain.
