Another Year, Another log.

After my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas I had to give things a little thought...

What would I like to do?

On one hand, I could add more units to my Word Bearers army and continue worshipping the gods of chaos....

On the other hand, I could start up a new army and maybe consider getting back into gaming....

Well, as you are reading THIS project log and not my Word Bearers log, I'm sure that you can guess what I decided on!

A trip into my local GW (Bath) helped me decide on what to collect and I walked out with a box of Sanguinary Guard, then I waited for Christmas and the bounty my parents would bring forth.

I have been painting these since the week before Christmas, so this is what I have to show for 2 weeks work.

It's a lot more than my usual output, however, my PS3 broke and therefore I could not indulge in Skyrim which I also received at the time, so I've pretty much been painting over the holiday season.

Everythings still WIP, the captain is the only fully finished model.

I also have left to paint:

5 death company

5 Assault Marines

10 Tactical Marines

1 Stormraven

1 Sanguinor

Enjoy

A trip into my local GW (Bath)

I used to go there, back when it faced the Spa Uni (it had a great view alot of the time and I don't mean the architecture). :(

Now that is odd - this has happened to me, too. I'm in the middle of fixing it, so it's currently occupying space on my painting table (in a great many parts).

That's a nice deep red on your chappy there and it's good to see the scrolls and parchments properly done. I like the basing you've done, that freehand on the shield and the general uniformity of the army so far. Good job! :)

Thanks for the comments everyone, it's really inspiring to know that people like your work. In fact, I have a novel idea for the base of the Stormraven....

Ahhh very nice I'm glad to see it isn't just me who does blue gems on the power armour.

Likewise, I quite like painting blue in small amounts, and thought to myself "the gemstones would look good in blue" more of a contrast to the red than anything else.

Two weeks? Man, I couldnt reach that standart of painting if I had 3 years for this little force. Stop playing video games. Painting is your strenght

I've had a lot of practice over the last year or so, so don't get disheartened, a couple of things that speed things up for me and thus are a godsend are:

Mecharite Red Foundation Paint - how I never thought to use this before I just dont know

Baal Red Wash - Instant shading, use watered down blood red to bring up the highlights aferwards to get that just airbrushed effect.

A 50/50 Wash Mix of Scorched Brown and Chaos Black - Brilliant for golds

Now that is odd - this has happened to me, too. I'm in the middle of fixing it, so it's currently occupying space on my painting table (in a great many parts).

The Chaplain is more of a mix of Blood Red and Chaos Black brought up to a highlight of Blood Red - I hate highlighting black and thought this would give me a bit more of a personal feel to the model.

I fixed the Playstation about half an hour ago, on a 5 hour continuous test with Fallout 3. It was in bits on my painting table as well until today - how spooky!

Wow, the chaplains getting more respect than I thought it would, thanks for the comments!

I have just signed up for the LPC to get the 5 assault marines and death company that I got for christmas as suggested by Taranis

I'll try and get the first photos up for tomorrow so we know what I'm starting with.

I think it's because your Chaplain is in a colour other than Black, which makes a really refreshing change from the norm ;)

Anywho, a great looking force, good luck with the LPC! :D

Thanks khakisuperbunny

Speaking of the LPC, I did say that I would post the starting point images for both squads.

First, the assault squad - I only got as far as doing the basecoat colours before deciding to enter them in the competition.

and second, the Death Company - all models are basecoated and one has had the initial red build up to test the scheme.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for an update on the rest of the army, I have managed to get started on the stormraven and almost finish a combat squad of tactical marines.

As you can see, I've only just managed to get the majority of the red finished, I still need to highlight the armour panels then I can start on the metal work.

Tactical Squad

thanks for looking.

Not a problem at all Daismith, I'd been meaning to add another tutorial to my website, so at least I've now got one ready made! ;)

Blood Red is actually quite opaque so by pic 3 it was about 3 very thin coats.

With step 6, use as many coats of Baal Red as you wish, just let it dry between coats, it's there to darken/deepen the red, not add shading as that is the purpose of step 3s highlighting process.

Thank you for the comments, I thought I'd give you a tiny, tiny update as part of the LPC,

the general gist of this is that I've made up a couple of army lists, and as my DC Squad costs a lot of points, it wouldn't be feasable to use them in a game of less than 1750 pts, so they will end up sitting on a shelf most of the time, so I thought I'd paint them to display standard, which should add a little bit of a challenge to get me to the deadline.

Plus, I have purchased another HQ unit which I should receive by the end of the week, and I thought that I would practice my NMM gold technique before I jump straight in on it, I just won't be able to resist painting the Sanguinor in NMM!

Sooooo...

Here you go.

My Sanguinor arrived today, I could have swore that GW made it in finecast, however, it's good old white metal, which meant that I had to spend about 1 hour cleaning it up.

Then I had a nightmare with the spray undercoat, I made a schoolboy error on the jump pack and wings and forgot to give the can a good shake first meaning that the undercoat was all thick and grainy, so I now have to put that section in dettol before I can do anything on it :)

I couldn't resist making a start on the body though, and pulling in as many references that I could, I have settled on a cross between three styles of NMM.

I'm going for similar technique to the GW NMM Sanguinary Guard however, I couldn't help but take a bit out of this tutorial for inspiration and most definately B&Cs own Brassangel and his Sanguinor, which is probably my favourite example so far LINK

So without further ado, heres the WIP so far, about 2 and a half hours in.

Thanks Olisredan, I'm reserving judgement myself... I'm confident I'll pull it off, but it's the small details that could let this down.

Update time:

Congratulations to me, I am now working full time at the University of Bath, ending the briefest period of unemployment I have ever had!

This also means that I have less free time, not that I'm complaining, but painting progress has slowed as I don't have hours and hours like before, so updates are less frequent...

but progress has been made!

and I made a start on the rest, thanks to the wonders of dettol!

Looks good. The wings on the jump pack look a little patchy though. I'd recommend tidying it up some. Also - the hilt of the sword needs attending to - there's far too much white in the recesses, imho. Besides that, I like him. :D

TDLO you are awesome. that Sanguinor is sweet looking. I never thought a purple shaded wings would look better than the standard blueish colored one. but you've done it. Good job.

Thanks, I don't get many people saying I'm awesome, just that I have too much time on my hands!

I have a thing for purple, the golds are all glazed with Liche purple, so I didn't want to use blue on the wings as it would look slightly off.

Aside from the shoulder pads and chapter symbol on the jump pack, all white areas are off as they aren't done yet, the wings are in a weird stage where I've basecoated in denheb stone, washed with black, picked out in SW grey then washed with purple, I still have to build up more SW Grey then finish with white.

The sword hilt is causing me to use swearwords that I would never normally use as the detail is so fine and washes don't seem to be working to give me the shading I need to pick out the details, it seems to settle more on the edges that will be white than in the recesses, so it will probably be a nights work getting that right. I promise you I'll get it... eventually :)

Great NMM, and looking forward to the finished SR!

Thanks very much, the SR is slow work, I think I'll do the base first with the crashed Viper Jetbike to give me a break from red then crack on with the rest of it.

What I hate most about myself is that by including that CSM helmet on the Sanguinors base I have given myself ideas for the next project (tzeentch chaos army) and if I even think of starting on that, I'll lose interest in my blood angels....(looks at unfinished Word Bearers)... NO... Bad Jamie... (taps nose)
