LPC - Belial and friends

Cactus

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd kick off my vow with a few pictures of where I'm starting from. I've already been working on these models for a doubles tournament in February but there's still some assembly to do. The photos could be better but these are also my initial test shots using my new camera-phone. When there's actual painting on display I'll make more of an effort. Expect to see these develop too as the project goes on. ;)

I, Brother Cactus of the Dark Angels, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least Belial and his command squad, two three Ravenwing bikes and an attack bike on or before the 31st of March, 2012. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

First up is my Deathwing command squad. The apothecary and the standard bearer have magnetised arms for different situations, however alternative weapons can wait for another time. Today it's all about the storm shields.

I might add a few details to make them more Dark Angely but they're pretty much ready to start painting. They're on hold for a few days though. Courtesy of Komodo I've just discovered Army Painter's Skeleton Bone spray primer. When it's delivered I'll be using that instead of painting bleached bone over a white undercoat.

Belial arrived in the post yesterday - I'll be using Forge World's Lugft Huron model as the basis. I already have a Belial with lightning claws, this version will be equipped with a thunder hammer and storm shield. It's going to be a real shame having to cut up the arms, especially the lightning claw, but I want those shoulder pads!

This photo's just a tease really. :D

Finally the Ravenwing. There is a third member of this squad but he's all done apart from his base, so not eligible for the challenge. Sprues of Ravenwing parts and riders not shown. I'll be digging through my bitz box and you don't want to see a photo of that.

The attack bike's been kicking around for years but never made it to the front of the painting queue until now. The two bikers will each be toting a meltagun.

Very nice Vagabond. Did you get a second of Huron's lightning claws for the left arm?

I was thinking of using a helmeted head but the hooded one works better than I expected.

I bought and downloaded the audio book of A Thousand Sons this morning and the first few chapters saw me through a good painting session. The attack bike is done:

Sorry the pictures are a bit fuzzy, however the colours are accurate. I'm skimping on some highlights for the time being, at least until everything is good enough for the tabletop. And I've just realised I haven't finished the eye lenses! :tu: Squad numbers will be done with transfers when all the bikes are ready for them.

Speaking of which, I've assembled the two guys with meltaguns:

You can just make out their squad-mate in the background.

Whiteraven, that's Vagabond's Belial. This one is mine. :P

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/20120112_215243.jpg?t=1326412409

And in a wide shot with part of his posse...

[These terminators aren't part of the LPC vow, I just wanted something cool to demonstrate his height with.]

He is (or rather was...) only held together with blu-tac as I was testing different poses before gluing. There's still some sculpting work to do around the elbows and pipes/cables where I cut Huron's arms in half. I'm also going to put a sheathed sword on his left hip and generally add more bling all over. I managed a good clean cut to remove the original lightning claw so that's going in my bitz box, possibly to return on a company veteran.

Would including St Celestine's cape and cherub ensemble be too much? It would be very gothic. :cuss

Love that pose Cactus. Not sure on including the cloak/cherubs frankly – I think it would look too 'delicate' on a thumping great Belial moving menacingly towards you. Just my opinion of course. It might look brilliant :cuss.

Thank you, although the pose is almost totally determined by Huron's shoulders. The little leather dangly things under the shoulder pads are sculpted so they appear to hang off the armour naturally, which means they need to be positioned pointing down. As for delicate, or top-heavy, you haven't seen my latest idea for the company standard yet...

However, looking at it on GW's website I'd feel obliged to paint an intricate tapestry on that cloth and I'm on a deadline here. I can always come back to the model and indulge my insanity another time.

Excellent pose Cactus! It appears Huron is a solid base for a worthy Belial conversion. Regarding Cherubs, go with your instinct! It will be unusual but also quite individual. It's all in the execution really...

And here he is, the (super)man himself, the Grand Master of the Deathwing, Belial.

No more picture updates yet (I might show some tomorrow if I can complete a few of my terminators) but I've edited my vow, both here and in the main LPC thread, to include a third bike. I was playing some training games for the doubles tournament today and when I realised that the bike squadron included a sergeant my opponent suggested making one with a magnetised arm for chainsword/power weapon/power fist options.

Thanks for the compliments, it all helps to keep me motivated.

I've been beavering away today and have finished the details and bases on three of the command squad. I've found the best spot in my flat for taking photos in natural light but the sun was going down by the time I'd finished so the pictures are a bit dark.

Cactus - really loving the metal chainfist and cyclone termy models. Pointy shoulderpads for the win B). And I see you've successfully used the 'double base' method to make them as tall as their more modern brothers.

Hey Cactus - weird calling you Cactus cuz

:P

As I said other day I think that Beliel looks amazing

When I got more than five of Terminators of my side for Doubles

Wont look as good as yours mind

Most converting will probably be a Combi-Melta (Althought a Combi-Plasma I think be better)

And a Cyclone Missile Launcher

Belial, Master of the Deathwing

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/20120303_150520.jpg?t=1330789015

"Do you feel lucky, punk?"

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/20120303_150740.jpg?t=1330790287

Close up of his storm shield or 'The Last Thing You'll Ever See'.

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/20120303_150701.jpg?t=1330789243

Noooo! I got grey on the purity seal!

http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb440/Cactus-/20120303_150912.jpg?t=1330789349

His face is shaded from top to bottom, so I avoided having to paint the eyes!

I skipped a load of highlighting on these guys, for now anyway. The sergeant's left arm is magnetised. I have plans for a chainsword and a power weapon arm too.

Excellent Belial Cactus! Very neatly painted - seriously don't worry about the grey on the purity shield, I bet you fixed it as I type this words.

The black on the bikes is amazing! So deep, the highlight inbound to take something away from it! Keep as is! Hahaha!

So are you done with the vow?

Thank you Captain S. The black is just a chaos black spray - three quarters of the model painted in a matter of seconds! I then add the detail colours, which can take hours.

I'm at 97% now. Only the company standard to paint, which I hope to do tomorrow afternoon. I'll then show the standard bearer and apothecary, and a group shot. I undercoated three bikes and two terminators this afternoon, so even when the vow is completed the quest continues.
