Sharp's 2012 LPC

Recommended Posts

Well, I figure I should add to the sea of LPC threads. For my vow, I pledged a dreadnought, a librarian, and a bike squad. I have picked the dreadnought I want to paint, a Relic Contemptor. It arrived Wednesday, and I assembled it that morning.

Fluff-wise, he's the previous Grand Master of the Angels of Retribution, Rakiel. As librarian in his home chapter the Angels of Absolution, he was renowned as a duelist with his two longswords. Chosen for service in the Angels of Retribution at the age of 180, he served in the Fist of Judgement for another 117 years before being promoted to High Executioner of the Fist of Judgement. Grand Master of the chapter followed 34 years later. After 76 years of service as the Grand Master, Rakiel was wounded in combat on Genhire IV during the cleansing of a Night Lord stronghold to remove those who had interacted with a member of the Fallen during a Black Crusade. Clinging to life, Rakiel was taken to the Apothecarion. Seeing all the signs of a body too far gone to drag back to life, Hadiel, the Master Apothecary prepared to harvest Rakiel's remaining geneseed. However, he was stopped by a low voice in his ear. "His duty is not yet finished, frater. He has guilt in him still, and it sustains him." Knowing immediately that this was a sure sign from the Emperor, Hadiel summoned the Master of the Forge. Together, they performed the holy Rites of Entombment and sealed Rakiel into a sarcophagus for communion with a dreadnought frame. Rakiel was soon linked to a Contemptor-class dreadnought chassis bequeathed to the chapter by the Consecrators. Now active as a Venerated Dreadnought of the chapter, Rakiel retains his dual sword fighting technique, wielding two giant force weapons with the strength of his adamantium body. No longer in a position of leadership in the chapter, he serves as advisor and mentor to Damion as well as advising the members of the Inner Circle in the Angels of Retribution.

And after work tonight I was able to get some painting done. I think I can call the blue done. It just needs a little bit of touch up which will happen after the other colors.

I accidentally painted the left shoulder blue. It'll be repainted in the chapter colors. And I just realized one of the pommels in missing. Crap. :/ Gonna have to find that. After he's finished, I'll get started on the bike squad, I think.

Comments and criticism welcome, as always. :D

What a great Relic Contemptor!

It will give me my impetus to finally construct my Contemptor that I bought when they came out and is lying in bits on my desk. Good use of the Dreadknight Swords, maybe I'll use a Dreadknight Hammer to make a counts as Ironclad Dreadnought for normal games.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Do it! It's an awesome kit, so much fun to work with. This is actually my second Contemptor.

Looks great not a fan of the grey knight's icon on the swords.

I wasn't at first either, but I've actually decided to do some playing with an idea that the swords were given to the Unforgiven sometime in the past as a show of brotherhood after a campaign. If anyone makes giant force weapons, the GKs do! :)

Thanks, Olisredan. Though I regret the painting is only decent. ;)

Now that is a smexy looking dreadnought, great job on the pose dude

Thanks. The kit is just so darn posable.

Wow, I want one...

What was it like putting together?

It was complete heaven. The kit comes in easily managable pieces, and the crazy amount of motion you can get out of the limbs is great. You can make him kneeling, punching, running, tripping ( :P ), anything you want really.

This guy looks fantastic!

I'd wondered how the DK sword would look held by a Contemptor and I have to say I'm totally sold.

Can't wait to see him finished.

I was uneasy about it at first, actually. But the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. :)

And here's the painting for tonight:

The metals are about halfway done, I'd say. I need some burnished gold for final highlighting ont he gold, and I need chainmail for the steel. Also, I plan on getting some heavy blue washes on the swords to play off the unique grey/blue of grey knights as they are currently imagined. I don't think I'll stick to their blue force sword effect though. That would be too monotone.

Now that is a lovely looking dreadnought! The pose is pulled off very nicely and it looks like the painting will really do the model the justice it deserves.

I'll be keeping an eye on your vow with great interest.

Sorry I never responded guys. I've been in a painting slump. Thank you for your encouragement. :)

So I sat down tonight to paint, but quickly found myself wanting to convert. Trying to befocused, I decided to do the Librarian Contemptor's base. I knew I wanted it to be urban, but not much more besides. I pretty much just decided as I cut and glued. What started as a random pile of materials turned into a battered urban manufacturing theme, with pipes revelaed by damage, chipped tile floors, and a broken conveyor belt hanging through a hole in the floor. A lot of these deails are lost in the pictures due to the angle and a priming mishap I had. I promise to get good pics when I paint it. ;)

I swent with green sword effects as I felt he needed something to tie him to the rest of the chapter. I still need to clean up the blending on the swords.

Comments and criticism welcome as always. :) I know this is a small update, but I figured something was better than nothing.

I knew it you'll come back with vengeance!!!

This is great Brother-Captain! The awesomeness factor is off the chart! ^_^ Only some detailing and you're done! I really like the base as well - great idea to go urban. you put a lot of effort and it shows! The swords are jawdropping (I reserve the relevant smily for when it is finished)! I really like the choice of green - a clear hint to the first Legion! ;)

A point on the chest eagle: it seems you are going for green. I'd say consider a metal color. Green & blue are not an ideal color combo in my view. The swords are excellent as they are outside the model and work great. Just my 2c. Can't wait to see it finished! :D

How about the rest of the vow? Any progress there?

Thanks for updating :) Still looking good and I await those better pictures eagerly!

Edit: Do tell me though, why is one shoulder now black and white?

Thanks! His shoulder is black and bone because that is the color scheme of my successor chapter. He's a specialist so one shoulder keeps the color.

Thank you, Master of Recruits! I painted the chest eagle before seeing your comment? What do you think? If I do keep it, I'm gonna go back and shade it some more. As for the rest of the vow, no progress on painting. However, the models are assembled and just awaiting paint.

That's amazing - brilliant conversion, and excellently OTT :P

Thank you!

And here's the update for today. The base is almost done, I need to just highlight the silver, but I can't find my mithril. I also did some more painting on the Dread himself.

Looks fantastic Brother-Captain! If you manage to make the Eagle look emerald it'll be a HUGE win! Seriously, despite my initial reservation it looks fine! I just pictured it gold in my mind from the beginning... Turns out there are more angles for the same project. The swords are also coming along very nicely too (but that was expected) and excellent helmet! It did not show in the previous pics but now... Black & white is just a very striking combo!

Overall this is the coolest dread I've seen EVER! Congrats Brother-Captain! Can't wait to see it finished! (and the other bits of the vow too)...

EDIT: could you give me a percentage on how much you've advanced with your vow overall? would 50% be fair? Your call!
