Restart to my allwing DA Army

Ive had some dark angel models sitting around for ages, but there always seemed something distracting me! However I recently saw some dark angels models on youtube that spurred me on to get mine finished! New Year new painting project! This is also first time I have used vallejo paints, and so far I have been very happy with the results up to now!

Im intending to make a large proportion of deathwing, some ravenwing, and some 3rd company marines! Ive only started on the deathwing and 3rd company marines, but have the ravenwing undercoated and ready to go!

The models are all very w.i.p and I have started a blog on the w.i.p section as well, but look forward to hearing the comments on the DA forum!

That's a very nice and strong green, a little bit of shading and highlighting and you've got the start of a winning formula there!

Always good to see someone paint their bolters similarly to how I do 'em.

Looking very promising so far, I'm looking forward to seeing this project progress!

Thanks Tengo.

The progress will be abit slow for the next few weeks as am doing lots of overtime at work, but after 31 Jan can get back to my normal routine and painting!

The robes at the moment is just vallejo earth. Im thinking of doing a 50:50 mix of Vallejo earth & buff, and then pure vallejo buff, and possibly white as an hightlight. But not sure if the white would standout to much. Any ideas?

I agree with Tengo: excellent green! And strange undercoating... is it the vallejo all around? I am not familiar with vallejo - but I think this must change! ;) Do you consider going for brown robes? The brown robed guy looks very promising indeed... This will give your force a unique look - on top of the fantastic green that is!

You have quite a project planned! Keep 'em coming! :)

Very nice! :o

The only shading/highlighting I've done on my guys was a mix of green and black ink so I can't really help you there...

All of my Vets and command squad members had bleached bone robes (my PA commander had a DW shoulder pad and cape in bleached bone), the others that had robes had white ones. I mention this because that brown robe can easily be lightened up to bleached bone, and would look pretty sweet, imo.

I'll be following this just to see what colors you're gonna paint the plasma and lascannon cooling vein-thingies (I've never been able to paint them well)

I love Vallejo paints, switched over to them about 3 years ago and haven't looked back.

The undercoat is just a grey primer from Halfords (car primer). I have recently found I actually prfer using grey rather than the usual white or black that I used to use! I have found its easier to see the detail than using the black undercoat, even with a thin coat of primer! The only problem is a few of the things I already have have been undercoated black already, but not many models luckly!

On the brown robes im not to sure about doing the normal marines like that, but I did like the colour of the robes. I may use it when I do a librarian that I have undercoated!

I move about every year and a half or so, on average, and I can't count on each new FLGS stocking the stuff...so I'm still mostly using citadel paints... I do use several vallejo paints, though... hull red is awesome for martian soil on my DA bases, and I picked up two vallejo colors (to go with either black or red wash from citadel) for my FW carmine dragon. I'm not sold on the idea that you need to stick to one brand of paints in any case, I say find the right paint from ANY brand or brands for the model you're about to do...

Heres the beginnings of my ravenwing contingent with standard & apothcary. Sammael is not in the pic, but is also undercoated.

Im thinking of going for 70: 30 Chaos black/codex grey. Then washing the models with sorched brown and then 50:50 of the chaos black & codex grey! Finally highlighting with fortress grey or its vallejo version.

The characters that I have to paint. Unfortunatley undercoated before my change to the grey primer.

This is the remnants of what I did previously! The robes are okay just need some shading & highlighting, but I will need to update the armour to the vallejo green that im using!

Currently building 15 assault marines, and 15 tactical marines (5 to go with a dev squad to bring it up to 10). Hopefully have some updates on the painting front shortly!

Huge project there Burias!

If your painting in the original post is anything to go by I think we are in for a great looking army! How about pledging a small portion of it to the LPC for the Dark Angels sub-forum? The Characters trio looks like a good candidate! It will give you some motivation (not that you need it by the looks of it :tu:) to get some stuff completed fast and keep your moral high over a longer period of time!

I know it works for me!

I did think about the LPC but im pretty sure I would fail. Dont have as much time as I would like to paint over the next few months, through work & work related exams! To be honest I dont like painting fast to deadlines!

I have been quite busy of late but have still been working on my DA. I havnt done any more on the ravenwing other than have them all undercoated!

Have got half 5 units of terminators underway and most of the company done up the first basecoat of green.

You may notice that some of the models are currently in wine corks. These are models are the ones Im intending to put on actual cork bases, that i have already done.

Shortly will be working on a few tanks, and up looking forward to trying out an airbrush for the first time on those! Should help speed up the process slightly!

The following models are all still very wip. Just to show my progress so far!

I especially like the shot of the flying Termies! :)

Lookin' good so far. My only criticism would be that your green is a little bright. Borderline Salmanders green. That said, the painting does look really smooth and clean. Keep em coming!

Thanks! The green in that pic does look quite bright, but irl its some what darker. Bad lighting i think!

On the other hand im not a big fan of Dark Angels green or the new Caliban green as i find it slightly to dark for my liking hence me using Vallejo Dark Green, and it has a matte finish to it unlike the old Dark angels green!!

Have still been working on my DA. Recently been experimenting with airbrush.

Heres some tanks and a few more to follow- 4 razorbacks/rhinos as not intending to glue them fully together! The vindicator dozer blades will be done in black with yellow hazard markings... hence the reason the undercoat is still showing through. Everything is still very much wip.. as the vindicators need a wash of badab black/nuln oil to darken them up a little.. the landraiders some golden sepia shading... and the BA are only up to the first basecoat stage!

Have also today received my tartaros Terminators to add to my deathwing army.

I have also been working on some BA to maybe includes as allies! Also happens to be how i first found dark angels and also blood angels, as they were combined in the first codex i ever got!

Nice start.

A quick question -- What spray you've used on your sang. squad? I like it. Great looking "annealed copper" (if i've translated it right) effect.

Thanks Komodo!

I havnt used a spray. It was Vallejo liquid metallic paint Copper. Its an alcohol based paint and I used a brush for it!

I will shortly go over it with red gold, and finally as a highlight Old gold!

Hope that helps!

I think the red bolters are the only way to go on the PA marines, though on the termis im going for the same green as i use on the power armoured models!

Looking good here too Burias :) , you have a tonne of work to do but I'm looking forward to a massive looking army when you're done.

And I might have to get some of that copper for my Khorne WE trim +++runs and hides from the Interrogators+++

Its great paint just cant let water anywhere near it! Can be hard when painting to switch from one to another as its a habit to dip your brush in water! lol

  • 2 weeks later...

Since seeing some of the clever people and there use of magnets i have subsequently done 15 terminators all with magnetised weapons.

Just need to figure out how to do the cyclone missle laucher in a satifactory way!

Do people on here cover up the magnets when undercoating/airbrushing?

You could drill a hole on top, place a magnet in and then cover with some Green stuff. I did that to my Contemptor and it looks fine when the CML is not on it. I plan on doing the same thing to my DW models who will wear the CMLs too.
