Sons of the Emperor

Hey all, long time member and lurker here, inactive for some time. I've been collecting 40k since some time in the late 90's, mostly Space Marines but with a few small dips into orks every now and then. Many years ago I started a thread here on the B&C for my DIY chapter, the Sons of the Emperor, spawned from my love for Space Wolves but wanting something a little different, I kept the rules set but went with red, gold and white and elements of samurai and viking history. That thread has since been lost in the sands of time but some time last year I finally completed a squad of grey hunters. This is them.

Four years start to finish isn't bad right? :P

Well shorty after I was rebitten by the bug and over the last few months of playing killteam games with a friend I've decided to once again attempt a complete army. This is something I have yet to accomplish after years of modelling and collecting. Here goes..

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg178/ulik0/TheBolterandChainsword-SpaceMarinePainter_sonsoftheemperorscheme1.png

The Sons of the Emperor are of unknown founding, and are now mostly extinct. Unlike most astartes chapters they were not made up of companies, but warbands led by individual lords, not dissimilar to the organization of the Space Wolves and other more independently minded servants of the Emperor. This particular company, currently only identified by banners bearing a single black feather and the symbol of their chapter on both shoulders were lost into warp hundreds of years ago. Out of touch from their chapter and the Imperium they were unaware of the fate that befell the rest of their brothers. Ripped apart by civil war the companies fought each other until barely a hand full remained.

Upon returning from their exile within the warp the last remaining warband of the chapter found their homeworld in ruins, any remaining brothers long dead or surely killed by the Ork Waagh! now infesting their planet. These lone survivors now begin the near impossible task of reclaiming their home and defending the remaining subjects left behind centenaries ago.

First up is a new paint scheme test model. Over the years I've used various different reds and highlight colours. I wanted to keep it simple and use shades that are easily replicable, this time using Mechrite Red instead of Red Gore as the base.

Next, a Dreadnought.

All the weapons shown are magnetized. Still needing to be done are the pair of twin linked autocannons, inferno cannon and missile launcher.

Planned next is to start on a new Grey Hunters squad and a Rune Priest to lead everyone.

C&C welcomed :P

I love the red.

Actually I love most everything about your boys, but the red especially. I find the Space Marines painted Fire Engine or Hot Rod red just... don't feel grimdark enough to me.

Nice touch that you did Japanese-style banners, too. Minutia like that set them apart and show that you care about the source of your fluff!

Wow those look awesome

In your other thread one of your marines looks like an ork is coming out of his butt :P

and for your dreadnaught idea you could always use the grey knight dreadknight now :P

5 Grey Hunters ready for paint.

And Ancient Brother Ulfor, pulled from the ruins of the chapter's monastery fortress upon returning from the warp and revived to aid in the liberation of their homeworld.

I may go back and add more battle damage but for now he's done.

Still more weapons to magnetize and paint but for now he has the option of an Assault Cannon or Twin HeavyBolters.

Id like to go back and add some soot to the meltgun barrel, once I get my hands on some weathering powders.

And this is the progress so far on my Rune Priest.

Thanks for the compliments :o

I had thought about a splinter chapter of the Emperor's Children, but with all the Inquisitional interest in them already after a Chapter civil war and spending years in the warp they would probably have been excommunicated as soon as they returned. The Son's of the Emperor are still fiercely loyal to the Imperium, so for now their founding chapter is still unknown/undecided.

Not a huge amount of progress at the moment, I've been been working on a couple terrain projects. However I have the remaining marines to complete the Grey Hunters almost ready for paint now, and a little progress on the Rune Priest.

I decided to take a break from the Grey Hunters and try out some ideas on a few Sniper Scouts.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg178/ulik0/20120217-DSC_0498.jpg

I wanted these guys to look like they were used to acting apart from the main force for extended periods, ranging out to perform reconnaissance missions and precision strikes. The bases feature alot more snow and rocks to try and represent them acting alone along the flanks, rather than the clear ruins.

I picked these up a little while ago and was thinking, objectives? Too big? Terrain?

Thoughts?

You could use one as an objective in most tourneys if it fits on a 60mm base. They'd pretty awesome as terrain, Especially if you had them at the entrance of a temple.

Also I love your conversions and painting, bloody great work mate.

Thanks Bam.

Something just didn't feel right about the Rune Priest so I broke him apart and started again, first with a new base.

I'm alot happier with him now.

Ohh, they're like Blood Ravens...except they're cool, and I don't feel the urge to kill them. Which is always good, I guess :)

Love the lil red Buddhas as Objectives, by the by. Those lil fellas remind me of the endless lines of knick-knack stands back in Thailand ;)
