Doing my bit for the Unforgiven again...

My new E Tenebrae Lux vow.

I MadDoc answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete a Command Squad (with Paladin Champion, Apothecary, Company Standard bearer and two Veterans w/ power weapons) from Codex: Dark Angels of total value 190 points on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to Dark Angels and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end.

Former LPC post...

Doing my bit for the Unforgiven...

As a dedicated Dark Angels player I thought it only right that I do my bit for the Unforgiven and add to the Dark Angels efforts in this years LPC...

I, MadDoc of the Dark Angels, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least one Company Master on or before the 31st of March, 2012. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

I know its not much but every little bit helps and it also motivates me to pull finger and get back into doing some painting for my Dark Angels. :P

So here is my first update...

The model prepped and ready for undercoating.

Excellent MadDoc! Can't see the picture yet (am at work) but you are right - every little helps and frankly, size doesn't matter! :P Completed vows on the other hand do! And I have a good feeling about that! :)

For the Lion!

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Here's a mini-update of sorts... apologies for the blurry pic, I'm still getting the hang of my camera.

Basecoated, base colours added and face done.

I love that model for the hidden arm. The enemy engage him in close combat to avoid his Plasma, and end up running into a Lightning Claw!

(Or a Power Fist etc.)

Sneaky :tu:

Great start to your vow MadDoc :).

Wow the robe looks great! Mind sharing your recipe?

Sure. Its actually pretty simple, I think the key is thats its built up from a black basecoat. I tend to start with a black basecoat for all my models (even for my Apothecaries), you might have to build up to your desired colour, but you end up with a deeper/richer colour that way anyway.

You can readily see the difference between white built over scorched brown (here) and white built up over codex grey (on my Apothecaries). In fact, I plan on replacing my old metal Apothecaries with new robed models made from the plastic kits (and perhaps some of the old metal DA veteran models) when I do I'll post those, they should be ideal examples of the contrast (I'll just have to get round to doing them ;) ).

Basecoat of scorched brown...

Next a lead coat of snakebite leather (which for some reason I didn't photograph).

Then a mid coat of bubonic brown

Followed by a blended layer of skull white...

Optionally finish with a light wash of thinned snakebite leather.

This also gives me the opportunity to add alittle update... robes - done; armour - mostly done bar detailing.

So as I said above, not too complicated, but it does the job.

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement everyone.

Edit - Apologies, I just noticed the pics don't really capture the blending in the in-between stages very well (I think the flash may even have almost completely washed it out). :P Bother.

Apologies for the double post, but I have another little update... some more detailing on the armour and his various bits of bling have been picked out ready for detailing. Oh and I added a decorative trim to his hood. B)

I don't think he's looking too bad thus far, even if I do say so myself.

I might even add his Command Squad to my vow (possibly), we'll see.

He's looking really good so far I love the snakebite leather technique, the robes and armour highlights look great!

Nice job on the face detail and hood trim

also is that a bone coloured shoulder pad I spy? I go for that colour scheme myself

Indeed! excellent detail on the hood of the robe!

Thank you. I was considering not adding any trim detail, but then I realised that if I didn't, it'd be something that'd nag at me everytime I'd looked at the model. I'll be replicating the trim detail on the cloak (as GW have on the showcase mini in the Codex).

What color do you plan for the outer part of the robes? Also white(ish) or some radical departure from the norm?

At the moment I'm thinking red gore base blended up through to sparse blood red highlights, then with a blue/purple wash to alter the overall colour (I could always skip that last step and cheat by mixing scorched brown into the other colours though).

At the moment I'm thinking I'll do the strap on the combi-weapon red gore or scab red with a single step highlight so that it'll be distinct from the cloak. The Dark Angels Chapter badges on the cloak will recieve a slightly modified version of my normal white recipe - black base, codex grey, light black wash, fortress grey, skull white - to help differentiate them from the bone white of the robes.

Hehe, I was wondering if anyone would notice that. Its actually his Heraldry (well the lower 'visible' half is anyway), this guy is to be my Master of the 4th Company, so he should have his (Company derived) Heraldry on his pad.

The below image should hopefully make things clearer.

I can be a bit obsessive with niggly little details like that. :)

Yay .... go 4th Company :tu:

Cheers

I

The funny thing is I couldn't decide what Company I wanted to make him, so I asked my wife (she's a Chaos/Slaneesh & Xenos/Tau player).

I showed her the Company Badges in the Codex and asked which one he should be (excluding the 3rd Company as I already have a 3rd Company Master painted up) and she chose the 4th. :P

Another little update - combi-plasma pretty much done (skull detailing and clips on gun strap still need to be picked out), powerplant done apart from the banner part (I haven't taken any pics of it yet), the cloak still needs highlighting and washing and the chapter symbols on it need to be picked out. Thats all for now.

So how is he looking so far guys?

Well done MadDoc- looks awesome! The thing with this mini (and the other one with the helmeted Master), is that the outer robe is inevitably the focal point and in the case of the hooded Master (your mini) even more so as it has the huge DA badge that draws the attention! So you are so close but in a sense so far, as in, you only have a few things left to do but they are the visually the more important ones imo!

Keep up! :)

Would you say 90% there?
