My second dreadknight

The Holy Heretic

Recommended Posts

Okay, I went and got an extra dreadknight - I just have a thing for walkers - built it, slapped on some paint, and I believe its almost there.. I'm almost satisfied, but it still seems a little flat, special areas include the base and the flamejobbed armour plates. So please chime in with ideas on improvement.

Also considering to tone the silver with a blue/black wash to make this one a 'dark knight' :(

But here are the pictures :

Thanks.

Doing a sword like that is actually pretty easy, especially on such a large surface:

Black undercoat.

Dark red basecoat.

Then make little "triangles" from the centre of the sword with a continually lighter paint ( red - orange - yellow - white ), and with each lighter tone, you make the triangles smaller, so you get the gradient effect :D

Well, your stuff is nice, but I'm actually more interested in hearing, what you'd do to improve on my dreadknight - non-critical flatter like "Your work is ACE!" will work too, if only to boost my ego - but I'd like this thread to be about this one dreadknight that I find a little lacking and how to improve on it

A bit more depth to the skin would be nice and maybe tidying up those washes too, they're a bit messy. Oh and going over that red line on the collar of the pilot would be a good idea too ;)

Otherwise, I love the sword and your freehand is quite good :tu:

my skills are only recently evolving to include multiple washes, edge highlights and transfers, so I don't feel up to criticizing your work. I think it is excellent, particularly the sword! Oh, and I don't see anything wrong with the psilencer barrels...

Thanks for the niceties. Yes, the painting is a bit lacking, and it does need a few touch-ups. I'm just not a 7 step blendman yet

But don't you find the base lacking too? Its just slabs of rock/concrete a little twisted metal and a broken nurgle banner. It just seems a little bare to me. It doesn't need much, just that little something to really get that wow effect. What do you think, any ideas? :D

No advice I can give.

I'll get that disclaimer out of the way to start!

I really love the sword. It's a great break from the usual blue.

The colours you used on the DK body itself look good too.

I'll have to check out your other stuff...

I think the base looks fine. Don't want it to compete with the model too much. If you want to spice things up though, maybe a formerly defeated foe, perhaps one he managed to defeat in game in some spectacular fashion?

I'm not exactly a great painter myself but from a 'civilian' point of view, the only thing I would want to see is a bit more definition on the face, it sort of blends into one ( though that may just be he pics).

I actually prefer your sword to the GW ones, so consider it stolen, though done with many different colours throughout the army.

Overall an amazing piece. You should post more pics if you have them of the rest of your army.

Well, since people are generally satisfied, I think, I'll concentrate on touching up the paint job - perhaps see if I can scrounge up a dead plague bearer to accompany the banner ;)

On popular demand (I count two :P ), I'll see, if I can do some pics of the rest of the army. I'm pretty satisfied with it in general, and it has a few pieces that catches peoples attention.. Hint! When Coteaz arrives in his Rolls Royce Rhino, he does have a tendency to turn heads :)

Okay. Upon popular demand follows the rest of the army :P

The Inquisition

First we have Inquisitors Coteaz and his custom built Rolls Royce Rhino. It comes with the option to add a roof turret to turn it into a the Rolls Royce Chimera. A special vehicle for the busy inquisitor, who has no time for bumping around in uncomfortable military vehicles.

The busy inquisitor of today often finds himself in the thick of battle. Those who might be a little uncomfortable associating with the rabid members of the death cults, have the option of purchasing the DeluxiGore Murder Servitors - also showing the inquisitors loyal staff of crusaders, arco-flagellants and John the Mystic.

http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac133/the_red_scourge/The%20Grey%20Knights/IMG_0438.jpg

Here we see some spare personel (mystic/psykers), hanging out with the inquisitors personal 'tech monkeys'.

http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac133/the_red_scourge/The%20Grey%20Knights/IMG_0443.jpg

No inquisitor can get by without a personal assistant, and the best of these are recruited from the officio assassinorum. These prized individuals make sure all your problems just vanish - these models have been with me since the heresy.

But sometimes the situations calls for a little more effort, and for this no respectable inquisitor should be without his personal Death Squads. Hopeful acolytes to be tested in meeting the taint first hand. The acolytes are most often armed with the mighty Storm Laser - an experimental gun from the workshops of Lithucraine IV with the power of an Astartes storm bolter - but often carry specialized equipment, such as Meltas for breaching doorways and airlocks, the mighty Plasma gun to deal with armoured worshipers or just a humble riot control weapon such as the lowly flamer.

The Knights

Sometimes the infestation is discovered too late and the walls between reality and the netherworld comes crashing down. For these instances the clever inquisitor always keeps a contingent of the emperors finest close by. The grey knights are also a superb weapon, when taint is suspected within the astartes association, quite often the Blood Angels and Space Wolves has been suspected of harboring treacherous thoughts and surprisingly often, the suspicion has been proven correct. It can only be a matter of time before these institutions of heresy is ordered exterminatus. Untill then the Grey Knights will often be seen led by a proud grandmaster toting the latest within Rad and Psychotropic Grenades, Sword and Incinerator (WYSIWHATEVER, Hector Rex is too good a model not to see battle).

http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac133/the_red_scourge/The%20Grey%20Knights/IMG_0433.jpg

The grand master will of course never leave home without a proper retinue of 5 paladins all ready to give their lives for the good of the empire.

http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac133/the_red_scourge/The%20Grey%20Knights/IMG_0430.jpg

A tragedy it is that so many heroes must give their lives to protect the empire, luckily death does not put an end to service to the emperor, and a psyfleman and a venerable plasma'nought stand ready to bring death to the infidels.

http://i893.photobucket.com/albums/ac133/the_red_scourge/The%20Grey%20Knights/IMG_0436.jpg

And of course the two dreadknights.

... and somewhere hidden in a garage an old redeemers machine spirit just dreams of seeing some action.

Thats it, hope you like it. Coming additions will be a plasmelta'raven, 10 death squad members, and after that I'm considering some assaulty interceptors.

Oh and if anyone has some ideas for some alternate 'rhinos' for the death squads, I was thinking of some american muscle cars or something to go with the 'Rolls'
